  1. I used to set the MIDI Channel to 1 when recording, and then change to another MIDI channel when done. Now I more often have multiple instances of Kontakt. Yes, it's probably more resource consuming, but I've got a pretty powerful computer.

As for Session String Pro (or, indeed, any Kontakt library), click the Info ("i") button, and the MIDI Channel field will be displayed. On the top image you've got the Snapshot (Camera) button selected.

Does windows consistently pass on those kinds of details to software in an easy to use (and update) form?

Considering the vague error message, this error is probably thrown by Windows, or the Lame encoder, using a numeric code that simply states an unspecified error occurred when trying to save the file. Of course, if the error code doesn’t exactly explain why the file couldn’t be saved, it’s impossible for Cakewalk to forward any such details to the user when the error is catched (well, at least without adding its own time-consuming sleuthing).

But adding a few examples of possible reasons when the "Can't save" message is about to be displayed by Cakewalk, I imagine might not only be possible, but also useful.

Just my two euros (yes, inflation).

The most common reason for this is that the encoder can't write to the file, either because it's on a read-only drive, or something else has got it open.

Maybe it would be a good idea to add that in some form to the error message. It's more descriptive than "Can't save" and would probably give most users enough ideas to understand what needs to be done.

I think it might be 49 bucks if I didn't own it already. But then it might be more if I didn't own Pigments too. From I've seen, I think people get the best deal when they go from Pigments to V Collection to FX (ie. crossgrade will be cheaper than upgrade.) Don't quote me on any of it though.

I own both V Collection 9 and Pigments. My crossgrade price for FX Collection 4  is €69. That’s 30 effects I might actually never use.

I cannot find a link to this "Discord" server nor any text about it. (I did find it eventually on the web - and did not see any reference there to "Cakewalk Next"!)

Can I suggest there is some information about it please?

So you didn't see the Discord link to Cakewalk Next you were given by OutrageProductions in one of the first posts of this thread?

OT but this is the Coffee House.
I found that movie to be surprisingly good even though I don't usually like ghost stories.

I love it. As a matter of fact, and not to take anything away from someone who hasn't yet seen it, I like all movies with a surprise ending.

Edit: I just noticed this was my post #666. That's scary!

  7. Discussions about Next should be done on Discord, not on this forum.

But to answer your question, if you don’t find scoring in Next, it’s either because it hasn’t yet been implemented (remember, it’s a work in progress), or, more likely, that Next’s primary target group probably isn’t old-school musicians, able to read sheet music.

  8. I’m not quite sure, but is there possibly an Easter Egg hidden in Cakewalk by BandLab 2023.09?

If you from the main menu select Help > About and then click on the upper part of the tallest building in the splash screen, a text appears that display the names of the people involved in the Cakewalk development. The notification ends with "Acknowledgements Thanks to over 30 years of dedicated engineers, who laid the foundation of Cakewalk." which to me indicates that it is indeed an CbB farewell Easter Egg.

But, of course, it could also be that I just haven’t observed it before. If so, I’ll walk out the back door.

  9. Cakewalk by BandLab is a Multiple-Document Interface (MDI) application, just like Microsoft Office once used to be. You can have multiple projects open in CbB, but they won’t show as separate instances of CbB in the taskbar. Instead, the projects are located in separate windows inside the parent application window, one on top of the other.

To display two Cakewalk projects at the same time, you open both projects and then from the main menu select Window > Tile in Columns (or Window > Tile in Rows, if you so prefer).

  10. To restore the big icon, from the menu select Views > Icons > Show Icons

To restore the small icon: Views > Icons > Track View > Show in Header

Also, if you’re using your own track icons and would like the big and the small icon to be in sync (as I do): Views > Icons > Track View > Show Custom in Header

  11. I don’t think so. Anyone who buys Sonar shouldn’t have any reason to reactivate some old version of CbB. If some critical bug indeed would appear in Sonar after the six-month activation period of CbB has run out, I would expect the Bakers to do anything in their power to correct it in Sonar as soon as possible. I would not expect them to change the activation scheme of CbB.

But I will refrain from further speculation and wait for the official release.
