I've had the VCL-25A a long time. It's excellent. Lowering the threshold on it makes the knee softer and lowers the ratio. With the threshold wide open, it's a saturation plug in. It reminds me of an RCA from the jump. The VCL-373 is smooth and thick. I suggest you demo these quickly. I got the VCL-4. I was never a huge fan of the hardware units compared to the LA3A, LA2A, etc... Seemed like a deal I'd regret passing on, so I copped it with all the other ones on sale. Looking forward to shooting out the VCL-515 against other plug in's and VCL-864U against my Fed Clone.

Heh. I've been having some luck with these settings, or about, on various buses (I have this on a synth bus right now and it sounds like it died when I bypass). The "E" can suppress your low end a lot, so be wary. This seems to get trashy and broken sounding fast. I'm a sucker for overusing stuff like this when I first get it to a fault, so I've been leaning heavily on more conservative mix settings most of the time. They claim the low end is "around 100Hz", I think more accurately it's around 85 hertz. They claim the high is "around 10kHz", I think more accurately it's around 13k. Doesn't really matter. It is pretty cool, but I still think I'll use the Black Box Analog Design HG-2 and Phil's Cascade more. I rolled my eyes at PA's subsciption plans before. Now- I think it's one of the best values out there.

They did this with the Phil's Cascade as well. I believe in that case it was scarcity of NOS parts, impossibility to sell in the EU die to RoHS, and an unrealistic required price point for the end user.

Can someone explain to me the application of these apps? I own their plug in's. I understand the Korg drum machines and synth apps- you use them to make beats, sounds, etc. Singing into a T Pain Autotune App (rip app) and taking the output of your phone and routing it into a bumpbox then to your convertor into your DAW- sure. Makes sense to me. But how are people using these? Are they for people that want virtual guitar pedals or plug in's on their iPhone/iPad? Is there software built in that allows wireless i/o between a computer and the iPhone/iPad? Are they for use when using a DAW on your iPhone/iPad? I just don't seem to get this.

Kinda different. The NX system actually has a piece of hardware that connects to your headphones and is used for head tracking. You can also use the clunky face tracking version with a webcam. This allows you to work in surround environments with headphones on, and I feel this actually has value (latency and other gripes aside). This means if you move your head counter clockwise, it will seem like your right ear is in front of the center speaker (in a 5.1 set up for example). I worked on a surround mix on a plane once from NY to LA, due to time constraints with NX. When I got to the studio with my 5.1 set up coming out my Cranesong Avocet tower, it was really good, and comparable to mixing on headphones vs mixing on speakers. As for using it to simulate mixing in Abbey Road, or Oceanway, or the music hall section of the Namm convention or whatever.... I don't find this to be very realistic or something I'll really use. Headphones and speakers, being as subjective as they are, will likely show other people that thrive using this, but not me. While the Waves NX system does include some " Eq correction", The Sonarworks would be more comparable to, say, the new Slate headphones (even though the Sonarworks can also be applied to some speakers).

New Macs. Serious sets of headaches. Arrow having a buffer issue and sticking (you can see it in the console) when going through a Black Magic video router. When you go directly into multiple screens, a different set of issues pop up. And the fact that the HDMI cables have to be long (like 60 feet), and all the extenders we've tried add an unacceptable amount of latency (and with OTHER issues as well). When you go through an HDMI splitter, the sticky arrow goes away, but the screens intermittently get these weird trippy horizontal lines that only happen within program windows. Big Sur doesn't fix the issue. We got 2 of them, and with the self upgrades (ram, etc) we did, they'd spec out at over $60k per machine. Sad thing is, I got a laptop at the same time that was around $6k, and it works damn near perfectly going directly into my Raven. And I got a ton of kickass plug in's this year, so I feel more cozy working at home than the multimillion dollar facility.
