I understand modes but had a hard time understanding this thread. Here is a summary of what I understand this conversation to be saying, combined with a bit of my knowledge. A mode defines a sequence of tone and semitone intervals in a scale. Let's consider this interval sequence (1) Starting on the first position of this sequence, we have the Ionian mode. This matches what we typically learn to be a (Western) major scale: This is the Ionian mode. However, you don't have to start at the first position. If we start at the second position of interval sequence (1), we get interval sequence (2): Note that we have looped the sequence: the final T in interval sequence (2) is the first T in interval sequence (1). This is similar in concept of how after a B note, we go back to a C note. If you play the white notes ascending on a keyboard starting from D, you will get interval sequence (2): This is the Dorian mode. Just as we started at the second position of interval sequence (1) [and looped when we ran out of intervals] to get the Dorian mode, you can start at other positions from interval sequence (1) to get other modes: Phrygian (position 3) Lydian (position 4) Mixolydian (position 5) Aeolian (position 6) Locrian (position 7) The intervals between the notes we play determine the mode that we are playing in. Playing different chords as a backdrop to your mode may cause it to sound like a different mode (when taken out of context and held in a context itself), but it doesn't actually change the mode that we are playing in.

Sounding good! Definitely lives up to its name - it certainly calmed me down. Great work Larry!

Wow. This is the first time I've heard that song, but it's really good. It has a structure that's slightly different from today's music, so it felt quite fresh to me. It might just be my speakers, but I found the hat and tambourine strikes a tiny bit loud in the mix. All good otherwise - great work!

Kilohearts releases Dual Delay - a free VST/AAX/AU/Snapin effect plugin

Yup - I think KiloHearts is great. Phase Plant is really good; they have a fun presence on Twitter too, where they often share short videos of sound design tricks. -

Maybe it comes from having a subscription model: Subscriptions offer steady income from those who don't mind subscriptions Free plugins keep KiloHearts fresh in the minds of those who don't subscribe. Those people might end up buying KiloHearts' synths/FX racks/preset packs for inspiration -
Great song and production Nigel!

It's a code you can use up to three times, only with a subset of their plugins though

I can't get anything like it with a static EQ. I confess I've not tried to recreate it with dynamic EQs. I'd imagine it'd be fairly difficult though. I understand it to behave like a Dolby NR reversal process, so if there are any specs available, they might be a good insight into what it does - either that, or using something like Plugin Doctor? I usually put it on the main bus, followed by the Ozone EQ with a very gentle scoop, and then an IK tape machine (one instance is all my computer can handle?) - Dopamine will give it some colour, but I'll still add a tiny bit of EQ after. Sometimes I think it sounds great after a mixing session. I'll load it up the next day and wonder if I actually saved my work because it sounds so bad ?
-
They sound great, but don't those need huge amounts of CPU?
-
It depends on what you've already got, and what you write. Personally, I put Dopamine on the main bus of pretty much every mix before final mixdown. Best to use sparingly and to check your mix the next day to make sure you haven't overcooked it. It's one of those reverse Dolby NR plugins that do something magical to the high end. Comp76FET is great for adding some crunch to drums and doing Parallel Compression. Some options in there for different sonic colours too.

They do, even to Punish Lite owners. There's a coupon in your account when you log in. It's for an additional 20% off.

Sorry, my bad - I used the words Update and Upgrade interchangeably; they have specific meanings for Studio One (and Komplete, and maybe some other titles)
-
I've only ever seen Komplete discounted 50% once for new users. Usually, it's only upgrades that are discounted. Some United Plugins plugins have the deepest discount at their intro price, e.g. Voxessor
-
It should work if you do the steps that Jeff and Yan mentioned. Register new products is for registering brand new products, rather than upgrading - or at least in the case of Studio One.
-
And also a pain that some plugin installers install ProTools formats to clutter up my drive.
-
Possibly it means it needs an iLok account, but not necessarily a dongle?
-
Corel's a bit tricky with their marketing. I get emails (and desktop popups ) all the time with discounts ranging from 10% to 30%. About once a year (at a random time), they used to do a 50% sale - it'd also be there if you buy from within the Painter app, rather than the website.

I like the sound of 8Dio's strings - I think my biggest gripe might be loading time.
