  1. What often happens to me is I'm tying to name a track and the dialog box looses focus. Now I've just told Cakewalk to guitar= G- Go to time U- ? I- Open inspector T- Tools opens A- ? R- Record If I was naming it Vocals V- Show Video pane ( this happens a lot! O- Open C- Control Bar A- ? L- Lop mode
  2. Well the Vocal sync was only a minor success. As Craig said, works sometimes. And not only that, I find it best to just avoid regional effects. They seem to create other issues. Chuck- The actual original audio files are left intact in the audio folder. Splitting audio only creates references to the original audio file it does not alter the original file. I used to use the envelopes until I discovered the keyboard short cut S as well as the fact you can drag the mouse to highlight and delete. I find this method is more precise and for me much faster. It is closer to the workflow of a wave editor. I work on the track soloed, You can quickly listen to your edits and make minor adjustments buy dragging the clip start or end. Perfect for removing breath intakes a split second before the word. And the fade outs can clean up falling pitch artifacts. Not only that now you are totally free to add an uncluttered volume envelope for mixing purposes. You can see in my screen shot that there is only the 8 files created as I originally recorded. If I had recorded the vocals in one take there would only be one audio track. My splitting resulted in there being over 20 clips but still the same 8 original audio files. .
  3. I always work with short clips anyways. Once I'm 100% happy with a vocal track I work my way along and highlight and delete all "silence" Most times there is in-breath and even headphone bleed this really cleans things up and it doesn't take that long. I also add fade in's and outs to cover other artifacts. So I tried it and it worked. Seems the rendered part shows the original waveform on top and the new adjust one on the bottom. In the first shot you can see the harmony ( lower track) was late on last to phrases. Vocal aline seemed to correct this perfectly. Cool.
  4. This might explain why I just had a weird experience with "freezing" a Dim Pro Acoustic bass track. I'll admit I've never used the freeze function before not needing it in the past. But while my 2nd DAW is at my friends I'm forced to use a 3rd machine and of course it doesn't have all my VST instruments authorized. So I just thought I'll freeze the instruments and that would also free up memory. I assumed the mix would not change but it totally did for some sounds. Dim pro is also "out of tune" I found many samples that are not pitch correct. Try the Vocal- Male choir.
  5. I've never used this feature and was going to give it a try today as I'm just laying down some harmony parts. So am I correct in assuming the harmony parts phrasing gets synced to the lead vocal? I was also going to try the phoney way and use Melodyne but actually singing it seems easier .

  7. I just thought I'd share my cheat sheets I made. First here is the official long list: If anyone here can admit to using all of them - cheers to you! https://www.cakewalk.com/Documentation?product=SONAR&language=3&help=KeyboardShortcuts.html#1306347 But for the rest of us, I made 2 sheets. The first one is the plain one key shortcuts I use the most. These are super important to know because these are the ones that are easy to toggle by accident. The second is a edited list of the combination keystrokes I might use from time to time. Keyboard shortcuts.doc Keyboard shortcuts complext.doc
  8. I now see we are possibly guilty of not reading and understanding the manual for these features. But that said everyone who has posted is a long time user and I would think software features should not be elusive to those who are long time users. It has obviously become WAY overcomplicated. I just read this thread a few times and I've learned a few new things, but still on trying to apply them to real life everything is still....well elusive to me. Basically we have music to record and not much time to dig that deep into the software features. Over time we slowly learn. This feature is over 5? years old? so I guess it's slowly sinking in..:) Generally I just leave everything alone. Because I use 2 monitors there is no reason to flip between too many views. With the multi dock on my second monitor I have only to hit the tabs to flip between Console and PVR. I'm more likely to use the old double click the midi track trick to open the PVR. But then I was setting up a laptop for my partner to work with and was forced to use only the one ( lot smaller) screen. I set up a workable view and named it "Laptop" I had to open all 65 projects on the laptop and minimize the Multi dock and re save. Dual screen projects will open with the Console view full screen and the custom lens didn't seem to change this. But once they are minimized they are easy to make full screen again. Here the trick ( Micv) A single click on the docking tab will open dock views half screen, but a double click will make it full screen. I still have to use the minimize arrows to get rid of it but I'm sure there is a keyboard shortcut. Keyboard short cuts are important and I'm always game for a new one. Just a while a go I learned the B = hide/show Browser I = hide/show Inspector these give you instantly more screen space. Also shift B = hide/show buss pane I use a lot. https://www.cakewalk.com/Documentation?product=SONAR&language=3&help=KeyboardShortcuts.html
  9. Steve's answer is the one to remember and why I said to watch my video. I show both methods. That shortcut becomes a good friend just like R or Spacebar. And with that in mind you now might know why it disappeared in the first place. You inadvertently pressed Shift B Possibly instead of just B which toggles the Browser. Keyboard shortcuts are well worth learning but they are also dangerous because it's easy to toggle something unwanted. When that hppens I often reload my lens to get my screen back the way I like it.
  10. That's good to know, thanks. The only installers I have are 2 series. that are in my CCC back up folders.
  11. In the end you have to make sure any guitars or Basses you use for recording have some sort of Hum cancelling Pups. Or just play REAL LOUD! My Strat has the Fender custom shop hum cancelling Single coils and it works great. The sound is still 100% Strat. My Yamaha bass I swapped the originals for a set of Dimarzio hum cancelling and they are also still a single coil. My problem child is my G&L Astat Tribute Tele. It has these oddball large soapbar single coils that I cannot find good replacements for. I cannot record with it unless I leave the room.
  12. Well it is a Melodyne 4 bug because the first clip I converted was the longest clip ( about 2 min. long ) and it converted normally as in the past in about 30 -40 seconds. It was the second clip that would not go ( about 45 secs. long ) and there was no difference in material. Just a Audio bass track with absolutely no embellishments. Not even pro channel. I just did an experiment and the tracks converted every time IF I first open Melodyne and set the process from "automatic" to "Melodic" . I do believe this glitch is at the heart of the issue. Obviously "automatic" does not work. The audio shows as one pitch until you toggle over to "melodic". Automatic seems the default and returns each time with new projects. And as said, Cakewalk is not crashing, there's no error message, Just the little wheel going round and round forever and a day. Task manager shows Cakewalk as "running" but if you tray and close it, it then shows as "not responding" But I will mark this as solved as I now have a clear understanding so thanks everyone for your insight.
  13. Thanks for the replies and Mark for the links. I remember those threads now. I think it is why I passed on the upgrade offer to Studio. I do have all my old installers but for the few times I will be using it I'll just perform the regional effect trick and see if that works. I might be using the vocal pitch correction as my partner is not exactly a great singer. Has anybody ever dragged the blobs to create a harmony part?
  14. Ya, that's exactly where hidden notes come from. I know real keyboard players don't quantize for this very reason. But my keyboard and drum chops would never be heard in public without the magic of midi cheating like h--l . Long live midi editing and especially quantizing.
  15. Thanks Mark, but the wrong detection logarithm if I understand correctly would result in a conversion l but it would be all one note. I checked and mine was set to "automatic" I guess I could try changing it to melodic but I have a feeling this is not the issue here. My scenario today was Melodyne freezing Cakewalk. It seemed random that it would work. There is a big difference in the 2 versions Below is the one that didn't work therefore my question. The one that did work is the one shown above and is much older going by the version numbers. Therefore my question.. Is the newer version working for everyone?
  16. To add. My main DAW has Melodyne 4 and is fully authorized. My old Laptop does not have Melodyne installed but it shows this version.
  17. I really have never used Melodyne for anything other than converting a real Bass track into midi. A month or so ago I thought I'd bring everything on my main DAW up to date. There was an update for Melodyne as well. Today was the first time I had needed to convert a Bass track since before the updates. The Bass track had 3 parts due to punching in. The first segment which was more than 1/3 of the song converted over no problem. But, the second clip just froze up at the "rendering audio" point and the wheel went round and round forever. I opened Task manager and it showed that Cakewalk was not responding, So I closed it and tried again. I had saved like I always do after any major change so my first conversion was fine. This time the second part worked but when I tried the 3 clip everything froze again. I hadn't saved thinking this was all working now. So back to task manager and re open project. Now no matter what I couldn't get the 2nd or 3rd clips to render, Odd? CPU was showing no action. I copied the folder to my back up drive , opened the song on my old W7 beater which is way out of date and the parts converted without issue. So I got what I wanted. So is this the "new" version of Melodyne not working well with Cakewalk??
  18. Cakewalk has very deep MIDI editing and I'm not sure people realize how deep. After all it started life as a midi editor/sequencer so all those original feature, some of them not even really needed anymore, are still there.
  19. I'm glad this topic was brought up and even happier to see we have the attention of Noel. Something different needs to happen- as here I am, a so called experienced long time user, and for the world I can never get the GUI to stay the way I want it from project to project without some minor adjustments once the project is open. No big deal, but between Lens and Screenset I remain baffled as which one to use. I stopped using Screensets when Lenses came along and for the life of me I couldn't sort out what the difference was? I even read the documents! It seemed to me Lenses did more of what I wanted. And if I dared to open a screenset as I could not go back to my Lens unless I opened another lens and re opened the original. So I have simply avoided screensets since. It left me pondering why they still exist. I have since removed that module from my task bar. But Lens's have a glitch that I always meant to ask about so I will take this opportunity. I have a huge project involving 65 or so songs my partner and I are working on this winter. With 65 songs it's real nice that each project would open and look the same, right. I'm working with 2 monitors but he's on my laptop with only 1 screen. I opened the projects on the Laptop and even though I tried setting a Lens up for the one screen they all open with the Console, PVR and any multi docks full screen. So I have to minimize to the dock and save. This for all 65 projects,,, geezers. Then the other glitch is the browser window won't stay minimized. With one monitor you need all the screen you can get for tracking. The workaround was to slide it almost out of view. But it would be nice to just use the double arrows and keep it minimized. Possibly a Sceenset would solve these issues but I'm reluctant to waste time re learning that system again. At the time it was quicker just to do it the hard way...
  20. Funny Craig pointed it out and beat me too it. And yep I have used that dialog I think since Sonar 6? And for sure it was because of my attempts at recording my Roland GR 50 to make bass parts. It also comes in handy with my Yamaha DTX drums as the hi hat pedal is glitchy. Those pesky hidden notes are always an issue. I get them a lot when I create a midi track from a real bass track with Melodyne. For me the dead giveaway is when a note does not sound or cuts out prematurely. So I grab the dead note and move it up or down to reveal the hidden note. Zooming in helps if they are that small.
  21. Yes, my bad, I didn't fully read everything and all I saw was my re-posting screenshot and that comment. Sorry all. But seriously this is a huge issue if a forum can be hacked as some of us have our Sonar products linked to the forum log on. Good to see they jumped on it.. all is well,,nothing to see here folks...move along...
  22. It's just "standard practice" to wire any serious studio with high quality cables. Even unbalanced cables will benefit in noise rejection if they are of the higher quality and have proper shielding. There's not much point in using balanced cables when the connections are unbalanced. Example an audio interface or powered speakers with RCA jacks are clearly not balanced. And guitar and most hardware synths are never balanced. RF interference is not an normally an issue if the cable runs are short. I have all lengths of cables from 3" to 6' just for this reason. I use no more than needed to make my connections. So always start out with the best cabling in your studio. And add to that proper power conditioning for the A/C ( Mains in your speak) . I use a Furman. The noise you describe is possibly like the one I will get when I use a wireless mouse. I will only hook up my wireless keyboard and mouse when I need remote control while tracking vocals. Otherwise I have eliminated all wireless devices from my studio space. Even my phone is hardwired. And the ferrite chokes are also a great idea especially on you USB cables. There was a thread a few days ago and that person has a Scarlett 2i4 which use buss power. ( EDIT_ I see Mark posted a link above while I was posting) They are documented as making the noise you describe and the ferrite choke is reported to solve that issue. . I have a few A/C power cables that have those chokes on them too.
  23. Part 4 of my tutorials explains most of what you need to know about the buss pane. Including how to find it if it is not showing. http://www.cactusmusic.ca/tutorial-videos Generally they have supplied a few templates for newbies to get started with but most long time users simply make our own templates and use those so we rarely need to do this. There's one case for me as I often OPEN a midi file and those projects won't have any busses. Takes 2 seconds to add them so nothing to gripe about really. Both project templates and track templates will populate your buss pane. Example when I insert my "Guitar" audio track template, it inserts a track set up to record that guitar as well as inserting a Guitar Buss .
  24. Then the next post was someone saying I sould be banned from the form because of this??? I'm not seeing ads myself.
  25. Where is this from? Is this what some are saying? Because the resolution is so bad I cannot see which thread this is from but I most certainly did not post the picture shown? If this is a sign of bad security here I'm afraid I'm not about to hang around and get abuse for having someone change my posts.
