When I'm in Cakewalk (latest version), and I play the note G2 (note 55), there is no sound. All other notes work just fine in any native Cakewalk instrument or 3rd party VST instrument. When I play the note in MIDI Monitor, it sends the on-off signals just fine, showing the note on and off, velocity, etc.. When I open ACID 10 Studio Pro everything is working just fine with all notes playing. When I open the free-standing version of Unify everything plays just fine. It is most definitely Cakewalk. This is driving me crazy! My first thought was that it was a bad key on my AKAI MPK49 MIDI controller. This is not the case. Is it possible that the G2 note has been assigned somehow to trigger a different, out of range note? Or is there a way to reset Cakewalk without doing a full reinstall? With all of my plugins and VST instruments this would take DAYS! As a matter of fact, this is a recent fresh install of Cakewalk, since I moved from Win7 to Win10. I am running on an HP Z800 dual Xeon machine with 48GB of RAM. There are no latency problems, and my setting is 500 in the preferences. Thanks for any help you can give.

It's very weird... comes to mind to make sure that your midi track is not transposed, because this could make any VST having your G2 out of range.

It seems to me that this is a problem with your VST destination...

Hi. I've Googled and searched here for the answer to a simple question. My  time ruler in track view is set to bars, but there is a little pop-up box box that obscurces the bar that obscures the bar numbers and makes working difficult. It may be because the ruler is displaying very small. How to I make the time ruler bigger and also make this annoying pop-up box go away?  Thanks

Can you post a screenshot of the time ruler?

Also, make sure the zoom is properly adjusted. See pic.

Thanks. I'm just starting to explore this, I've always added the effect to the entire track before. I'd like to start by adding some delay to the end of a phrase or word.

I usually do this by adding the delay to the track/bus of the vocal track - set the delay parameters - automatize the effect to the desired effect. No need to split the clip, just work on the automation lane.

Other solution? yes, duplicate the track - split the clip (create fade in-out in the edges to avoid noises)  - move the clip to the 2nd track - apply the delay to this track only. You can even use this method to get the delay effect in all the words of your vocal track that you wish to affect. Just split them from the 1st track.

  4. Yes, I switched from Saving as Bundle to Save As (including audio files). And I use this only when the project is finished, saving at least two copies in two different drives (plus the Cloud).

I think that once you get a personal file handling system that works fine for your needs/habits, it’s easier to avoid the kind of problems you describe.

The  Clean Audio Folder utility is not really a file manager, but a (sometimes) useful tool to delete un-referenced audio files, but I guess that means that the file is REALLY orphaned, and not just in a different drive, or hidden somewhere.

    Thank you for your reply.

I am aware of this feature but as far as I know it will only repeat the selection in a series. I want to be able to repeat the individual Paste in multiple locations. (For example, a drum track of a kick drum has measures where the drummer messed up a dozen measures here and there. Rather than have him record a whole new track I can select a measure of audio that's good and then paste that over all the bad spots.) It would be a lot easier if what I copied was available to paste again and again with going back to re-copy it over and over.

The universal way Copy/Cut/Paste works in every Windows application I have ever used is that whatever gets Cut or Copied, is retained on the Clipboard until until you Copy or Cut a new selection, or close the application.  Several applications I use, upon Shutdown, actually ask you if I want to save the selection on the clipboard to use in another application. I can't understand why Cakewalk does not follow this universal convention? Is there a work around for this?

    I understand.

To my knowledge, there is no need to use Copy multiple times. Just copy and paste as many times you want in different sections of your project.

At least in my system it is working as described. See video.

By the way, there is also the option to Copy-Paste Special-Link to Original Clips if you want to edit the "master" clip later: the linked clips will update as well.

If I have a couple of beats of a drum audio I want to Copy and Paste over and over I select the section of the audio and do a Copy. Then I Paste the selection to where I want it. But if I go you paste it again the Paste menu item is grayed out as though once you Paste an item it gets erased from the "clipboard" and I must copy the original selection again. This is very inconvenient, Is there a way to retain what I copy to the clipboard so I can paste the selection over and over without the need to copy it over and over??

    Thanks

Yes, use Edit/Paste Special instead: you can select the number of repeats.

  7. Yes, it is. After a while, it makes sense, as you just right click on any control you want to automate: it's very straightforward.

Once you do it, the automation lane is created and you can edit the envelope itself if needed.

Remember that you can also enable-disable READ automation to temporary override your envelopes, without erasing them - Very useful!

  8. It's not that difficult to use your mouse, at least for a first pass: when in play mode, with the fader armed for automation writing (and reading of course) just click once when you want a change, no need to hold it pressed all the time.

After this you can go to the envelope lane and adjust as you need, drawing. Sometimes it's easier to draw, sometimes it's easier to use the control surface or the mouse.

  9. Yes, of course you can.

In fact you can automate almost everything in CW.

There are several ways to automate your buss:

    1. Right click on the parameter (fader-pan,etc) - click Automation Write Enable - press play and move the parameter in real time: it will record your changes
    2. Create a automation lane for the desired bus: draw your changes in the corresponding bus lane

You can even enable-disable the reading of your automations. There is plenty of information about this in the manual.

I created a midi track using a vst synth. I can hear the track when played in cakewalk.

I do a "Select All", File > Export > Audio, the time range is correct.

When exporting as a WAV the result is an empty file of silence (4K in size).

    What am I doing wrong?

...comes to mind, make sure the selected area includes the audio output of your VST. If not selected, there will be no audio exported.

I usually manually select the tracks (audio outputs included).

    Or/and

Double check the settings of the export dialog (there are several options to choose from). If you choose the wrong ones, it could explain the lack of audio in your exported wav.

I see. I don't have  Vienna Synchron, and for me this happens with the XLN XO plugin. Might be something wrong with that plugin too then.

All I know, is that what you experienced before is identical with my crashes.

Mmmm, may be a good idea to contact XLN support.

Or you can send a minidump to Noel, cakewalk support, to confirm if the crash is related to XLN XO or CW.?

Check there isn't a plugin which is introducing latency (and likely then not reporting it properly).

Some plugins use "look forward" for proper use, as Pro Channel LP EQ and Adaptive limiter. It introduces a delay.

Yes! I have the very same problem, altough with XO VSTi instead. Cakewalk crashes... I'm on the latest version as of today (check date of this post)

Pulsewalk, the crash related to Vienna Synchron was resolved by the Vienna team. They contacted CW and figured out it was something on Vienna's side. It's solved at this time on the latest Vienna Synchron player release.

  14. I think there are several ways to accomplish that, and it depends on many factors to decide which way to go.

I used to normalize the clips too, but I discarded this method in favor of a less destructive and less radical approach.

    I use this workflow:

    • Comp the takes
    • Duplicate the comped take and archive the original (just in case!)
    • Use Melodyne to adjust details (tuning and timing mainly, but also specific blop levels)
    • Use track envelopes on sections of the song.
    • Apply compressor to the whole track (or bus), if needed

I'm sure every producer has it's own preferred way to work on vocals, and of course the source material often point in a direction to go.

    Hope it helps!
