I'm planning to jump on a Stream Deck XL.

Do you already know what's going to be on sale? I don't have much experience with Prime Day, with the exception of a few hours a couple of years ago when I saw a bunch of crap on sale rotating every few minutes. That's where 90% of all those George Foreman grills in thrift stores come from.

it has a raving fan base, that's for sure

This is the first time I've heard of Stream Deck - does it work with (i.e. 'control') any software? or is there only a specific set of apps that work with it?

It's basically a programmable keyboard. It sends key combinations to "control" whatever program is on focus. It can also execute exe and bat files, open specific web addresses, send a text string (for example, I use it enter Zoom passwords for recurrent meetings), and a few other things. It can also send MIDI messages, but I haven't used that capability. I love my Stream Deck, by the way.

In a DAW, it's helpful for keyboard shortcuts that have too many keys or that I just can't commit to memory. You can also send F13, up to F25 (I think), so if you feel like you're running out of possible shortcut combinations, you get more with the Stream Deck.

I bought 4 wifi-activated AC outlets (smart plugs) that you can control through the SD via IFTTT, but I haven't set it up.

I haven't used or downloaded any of the Analog Obsession stuff since the whole "virus thing" a while back.  (search the forum)

After spending way too much time reading this thread, it looks like AO's website got hacked in Feb 2020 and the hackers inserted malicious code on the 32-bit versions.

I suppose one advantage of using Patreon is that they have more secure infrastructure (at least more than what an independent developer can afford).

Anyway that's the rationale for jumping into the Waves ecosystem despite having read countless complaints about WUP. Am I missing anything essential that could lead me to regret my decision?

We all have our pet peeves. Mine aren't even consistent. I sometimes hate installers, other times I love them, etc., etc. So you can't go by what others say.

If you've made the decision, good for you. Enjoy!

Incidentally Superior Drummer 3 is working beautifully ...although not at $49.99

I've spent $160 on BFD 3 and 6 expansions.  For that kind of money SD3 does not even wave at you.

  8. wow, really? what I've read at the BFD, Gearspace and KVR forums is that the transition to inmusic has been a complete boondoggle... BFD crashes, it crashes the host, the license manager de-authorizes the product or the extensions wantonly, etc etc
