What do you do about the messages today?

I've clicked "Yes", "No",  the "X" to close and always continue on with Cakewalk. Cakewalk seems to be unaffected  because it's not using that device.

Disabling in sound settings means Windows won't use the devices. Keeping the devices enabled in the Device Manager means OS still loads the drivers making them available for application like CbB. Disabling in the Device Manager should prevent CbB from finding the drivers.

I see. I'd missed that. I thought that the device was no longer available .

I think I've tried skipping the audio drivers in the graphics card install but something happened that convinced me to include them.

New trick I learned off another forum today was turn off fast boot in windows 10. The computer will start up slower but that seems to fix the problem for some people. Couple pops and crackles as usual today, no crashes though.

Thanks. I thought I had it disabled but didn't and haven't had any problems. I just disabled it. Thanks again. My understanding that disabling fast boot is a good idea because the data saved by Windows to support fast boot may in some cases be corrupted and can trash your system.

The device may be in aud.ini. This file is in %appdata%\Cajkewalk\Cakewalk Core

If the device is referenced in the file. The easiest fix is rename the file. When CbB starts up it will recreate the file based on the devices found.

Also there is a new option to suppress these messages in preferences called Show Audio/MIDI Device Change Notifications

Thanks. So the message is inconsequential  and suppressing it is ok?

    I didn't any AMD references in aud.ini.

May want to check if the device is enabled in Windows Device Manager under "Sound, video and game controllers." If it is, disabled it there.

None of the audio devices are disabled in Device Manager but all except for the Focusrite USB are either disabled or not plugged in Sound settings. (see screenshots) Is that not enough?

  4. I change display power settings (form Never to 10-min) when I walk away from my DAW for a while but don't want to shut down.  I do this just to give the display a rest. When I come back I see the Audio Device disconnection message in one of the screenshot attachments. I can't understand why. I also included sound device settings screenshot attachments to show that all are disabled except for the Focusrite USB audio interface. I also verified that the Focusrite audio interface is the only one listed in Cakewalk audio device settings. So why does Cakewalk display this message?

"Convert to Mono" is clip based, so Track Pan has no effect (later stage in signal flow).

To "Separate stereo track into two mono tracks" you can use "Bounce to Track" with "Split Mono" option:

Track View: Tracks - Bounce to Track(s) - Channel Format - Split Mono

In this case panning is affected.

Exporting a track with "Split Mono" is also possible.

Thanks Klaus. I'm glad I asked. This solution is much better than the one I'd found googling.😀

  6. How does the "Convert to mono" function in the audio clip context menu work? I see it bounces the clip to a new mono clip. But how does it do it? I'm guessing it sums the two tracks which would incorporate any phase cancellations. Is it affected by the Pan control?

What I'd like is a "Separate stereo track into two mono tracks" function, but I haven't found a way to do that.

True...  But if you read the new forum, along with other music forums, a popular complaint for people new to CbB is crashing and popping.

If you're using CbB, crashing and popping are most likely caused by plugin, computer, audio interface or other hardware problems.

I haven't had any significant problems with CbB.

That doesnt happen always but I've seen it once. Do you have a recipe?

Not really. This a new project. Started with the empty project template, added a single track, copied six clips (events no markers), right clicked in the empty track clip, Edit > Paste Special starting at track 2 at 1:01:000. Then deleted the empty track 1 and metronome bus. That's when I saw the zoom pointer. I did all that in the last hour. So my memory is pretty fresh.

It repeats. It still pops up. I can send you the project. If you need the audio tracks, just need you to delete them when you're done troubleshooting.

The amount of CPU required is microscopic and does not increase latency in any way. Im not sure who told you that. There ARE sometimes conflicts between drivers which could pose a problem But those are only certain instances.

Most users on this forum run Bandlab the same way. Use their onboard Audio enabled, their Soundcard for Sonar.

Thanks.  For now, I'm happy with having my Focusrite 18i8 USB audio interface as the only enabled audio interface.

That utility is likely in your startup folder.  Unless you need constant access to your display settings, best to just disable it in startup, then it won't conflict with Cakewalk.

If you need occasional access to the utility, then just find the application and create a shortcut on your taskbar or desktop.

Is "That utility" the Radeon AMD graphic card settings app? If yes, I agree and plan to do as you suggested since I've resolved the system failure notifications.

My motherboard audio is left on to monitor audio from YouTube, Media player, exc.

Haven't had any issues because Onboard Audio controls that and my 18I8 uses its own independent speakers. This way I can also play along with You Tube while using my 18I8, thus using both soundcards simultaneously. No extra latency that I can see.

I would give it a shot.

Having separate speakers probably eliminates competition for the audio interface, but, it does require a second audio driver which is competing for CPU resources which might increase latency.

I have an 18I8 as well and have never had an issue like this. I power up my PC. I then power up my 18I8 (and my Mackie Control) and then Power up Sonar/Bandlab. Im guessing it is directly correlated with the AMD RX 580

It's not the RX 580 because I had the same problem with the R7 250. Maybe it's my ASUS X99 DELUXE II motherboard or its chipset.

Also, both the RX 580 and motherboard have HD audio interfaces but all are disabled except the Focusrite. Maybe if I left one enabled, which I don't want to do because of associated latency, I wouldn't get the error because there would be an available audio interface. I hadn't thought of this before.

Also, when I do use the motherboard HD audio output, I use the SPDIF output to my monitor controller which is also powered down on startup.

  13. If you experience unexplained error notifications from your display adapter software shortly after startup, try powering up your audio interface before you power up your PC. For me if I don't power up my Focusrite 18i8 USB audio interface before restart or power up of my PC, I receive the notification shown in the attached screenshot.

To avoid surges and hardware damage, I've always powered up my audio hardware starting with the audio output source and working through to the speakers (PC > Audio Interface > Monitor Controller > Monitors). But, now I power up the Audio Interface before the PC to avoid the Radeon notification shown in the attachment. My display adapter is a AMD RX 580. I had the same problem with my earlier AMD R7 250.

I'm posting this thinking that I'm not the only person with this problem and that I've picked a title and tags that will allow others with the same problem to find it.

Sound on sound has done plenty of reviews of cake software.  But there is nothing new to review, really, since bandlab bought out the software.  That was the last big news to hang any writing on, and the last cake review I know of was in tape op talking about just that.  If rapture pro 2 was released, or boardwalk by bandlab with large additions, the magazines would run reviews.  But it it hard to write a new car review if all they’ve done is add new tires to last years model, no matter how smoothly it now rides.

That's true. I hadn't thought about it in that way. I was thinking that over the last year, the Cakewalk "Bakers" at Bandlab have done a good job of maintaining and incrementally improving one of the best and most comprehensive DAWs available. And it's free.

  15. What does it take to get Sound on Sound to review Cakewalk? I've always put a lot of faith in their reviews and believe that the magazine and website are well respected in the music production industry. The routinely provide detailed technical reviews of DAWs. The last Cakewalk review was for SONAR Platinum in 2015.

It turns out I am also wrong about Index hyperlinks.  The content name is not hyperlinked but each page number has a hyperlink.  That makes sense when one Index entry is included on multiple pages.

    Thanks I'd missed that too.

One last thought.  The Cakewalk by BandLab Reference Guide is updated with each new product release.  2019.07 was released yesterday (July 30, 2019).  Users can download current 1724 page pdf document by opening the "Cakewalk by Bandlab" tab at the top left of each webpage and then selecting the "Reference Guide PDF" selection from the drop down menu.

Thanks for the reminder. I took a look at the extensive new features section. Makes me wish that I'd saved all the previous versions. Also, now I'm not so interested in bookmarks since I can't transport them from one version to the next.

I think at the very least every listing in the Table Of Contents and Index should have a link to the listed content.

Jim, The Table Of Contents does have links to listed content. Click on any line to go to that page and content. Having the same in the Glossary would be nice.

The excellent Cakewalk by BandLab Reference Guide is a 2,184 page, 41.9 MB pdf file.  While excellent, the manual has too many pages to print out and carry.

My suggestion is for BandLab Technologies to adopt the e-book file format, EPUB.  EPUB is supported by many e-readers and compatible software is available for most smartphones, tablets, and computers.  EPUB is a open-source, technical standard published by the International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF).   Here is a link to a Wikipedia article and a second link to the IDPF website where the standard is available for download.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EPUB

    https://www.w3.org/publishing/groups/epub3-cg/

For me Bookmarks, Search, ability to go to a page, and both Contents and Index link list are the most important. I just started using free foxit PDF reader because it has those things. I like the idea of going to the open-source  EPUB format as long as I can find a, preferably free, reader that has the important features listed above. A quick in the Microsoft Store turned up freda as a possible good fit. Anybody using freda?
