  1. Well it said it created the link and it is there on the C drive. I guess maybe I need to change the paths in register or something. which I can do. Because when I try to open, say a pro channel preset it goes to the user folder etc, etc cakewalk core

Never mind, I guess change all the paths in the folder location prefs? too late for this stuff. I'll give up for now.

I have done all this before, paths, etc so I'll tackle it tomorrow. Thank You for your help. At least the directory is created properly.

To relocate "C:\Cakewalk Content" to "E:\Cakewalk Content"

    1. Using Windows Explorer MOVE "C:\Cakewalk Content" to "E:\Cakewalk Content"
    2. Open a command shell as administrator and type: mklink /j "C:\Cakewalk Content" "E:\Cakewalk Content"

Moving it now. So the Cakewal Content folder gets recreated on the C drive by CW at some point? Because it was there. I did this years ago and I believe you are he one that helped me do it. I never created the folder on the C drive

First physically move "C:\Cakewalk Content" to "E:\Cakewalk Content"

    This

is telling you "C:\Cakewalk Content" already exists.

When creating a directory junction, the name used for the junction cannot already exist on disk.

    Hi Scook,

So do you mean I need to change the name of the C:\Cakewalk Content folder?

Sorry I did NOT se the first part of your reply. So I need to copy or MOVE? to E drive. Obviously I am not understanding the mlink command

  4. So, years ago, I was shown how to use this comand - ·      mklink /j "C:\Cakewalk Content" "E:\Cakewalk Content" to move the Content folder to my sample disk, which is E:\Sample Disk.
Have a new build, cpu, nvme's, etc, etc. So the link is broken. First error said cannot create because folder already exists. So I took this to mean the Cakewalk Content folder on my E drive already was the issue (I originally did this in 2018) I need the CW Content folder on the E drive, the one on the C drive (which is the original C drive win 10 install from 2018) is incomplete to say the least.
So now I am deleting the CC folder on the E drive (I have a copy now on the C drive because I just copied it there.

Still I get the message in Admin Command prompt "Cannot create a file when that file already exists" ????

Is thiere a reference to the mlink in the reg that I need to delete or something because it definitely does NOT exist on the E drive anymore-even did disk cleanup to make sure it was gone?

    Help please.

@Pathfinder I have to admit I'm am currently running an EVO 2TB SSD for audio in the studio rig.
The Black was getting some age on it, and I had the EVO; preventative maintenance.

The SSD read/write limitations would be a concern IF I was doing commercial work...

did I mention backup, backup, backup?

    t

By. your quote, "if I was doing commercial work",  do you mean SSD would be a concern?

IOW, my recording are for family and friends. Also I usually only have maybe 20 tracks, ALL MID VSTS except for vocals and ALL guitars.

I have a new EVO which I am going to use for audio. But I only record one track at a time so I image I won't be near the cons of the read\write possible issues of SSD's? Hope that makes snse.

    Thanks for all your input!

I have been using Western Digital Black drives for years; never had an issue.
    HTH,

backup, backup, backup; redundancy is our friend...

WD Black is exactly what I have used for Audio also................
I have multiple backup plan and even have a backup in my safety deposit box.........Very OCD......

You won't lose quality with any kind of drive you record to - internal, external, HDD, SSD, SATA, NVMe, USB... data is data.

However, you'll have substantially less speed recording to an external drive, which will mean far fewer tracks that can be streamed at once, and a much better chance of clicks and pops. Your NVMe drive is absolutely the best choice to record to.

That said, it's a really good idea to back that recording up to an external drive regularly. All drives fail eventually, so regular backups can sometimes be a life-saver.

OK Thanks............That's what I will do.

  8. So I built new PC. Not the top of the line but pretty powerful. Asus Prime Z590 A, Intel i7 11700, 32gb ram etc, etc. Case (Fractal Design) will take all the drives I want.

For the longest time, including as of this post, I use a 1TB SATA HD, the old type. Has always worked well. Just a home studio for me.
Now I have that, and 2 Samsung 980 Pro 1TB nvme m.2's installed . regular 500GB Sata SSD for OS and apps.
did a lot of searching and keep finding advice that says use external HD to record? I would rather us internal.

So am I losing "quality" or whatever recording to a regular, (well high end WD 1TB) drive. Just the audio goes there. Samples ar on one of the 980 Pros.

Hope this isn't as confusing as some of my posts lately 🙂

    Thanks

You can run it directly from the notification that pops up after the download completes, Why are you going to the download folder?
If you do it this way Cakewalk will shut down and update itself automatically. No questions asked.

OK I don't see anything but "download"? in that notification. what are the words I am looking for please. Thanks

Fine I will wait for the next update......

If you run the in-app updates, it does a "silent" install that just shows you the overall progress bar for the update keeping your existing settings.

OK I guess I am doing it wrong- When the notification pops up in bottom right hand corner I click download. Am I NOT suppose to do that?
I then go to my download folder and run the exe.
    Yup, I'm confused.

  11. So, why doesn't the "update" just update? What I mean is and since the beginning (of CWbyBL I mean, not Sonar etc.) why doesn't it just update. I really don't remember every directory and how I have moved things to different drives etc. I can look before I guess.

But my OCD kicks in everytime. I get I can choose advanced sop I can CHANGE something.
I would rather it just updated unless I choose to change something. IOW, If I choose default I shouldn't have to keep clicking on NEXT. It should just happen. Isn't that the reason for Default or Advanced?

Now, I am guessing you folks will say that's what it does. But, I don't need to see paths and so forth. I have stuff redirected to other drives etc. I know, doesn't soun like a big deal but since it's an "update". If I want to see\change something I would choose advance. But I don't so why not just update

May not make sense to some\most but this has annoyed me since the beginning.

My spelling is great, my TYPING stinks.

The interface has combo inputs. Whether line or mic level depends on whether you plug a 1/4" or XLR into it.

All this is covered in Focusrite's documentation.

The Warm Audio Wa12 has 2 outputs, as mentioned. XLR and TRS-both are balanced. I am using the TRS out of WA12 into 18i20.
I think things are OK. Vocals sound fine monitored and recorded. except I would like a better mic, but that's another story. I also am using the -20db pad on the warm audio. I have not tried using the pad on the focusrite yet (think it is -10db.)

So I think I am OK for now. Apreciate all the responses and I am reading and searching to understand why Inputs 1&2 have line\inst option and the otrhers don't? I do NOT have anything connected to 1&2. They also are selected by default as the monitor channels when starting up. I am trying to watch vids and read as much as I can, trust me.

My 6i6 is different but I think we share the same Mix Control software.

In my screenshot you see the toggles where you choose line level. Not exactly sure but I think you would use TRS balanced cables but possibly no difference using XLR connections. I'm only thinking that there might be some sort of automatic bypass of the pre amps if you use TRS or TS 1/4" jacks. XLR might always use the Pre amps. That's a question for Focusrite which probably is in the manual or tutorials.

You would then set the input to Line and then you may still need the Pad engaged if the signal is still too hot.

    Screenshot (50)_LI.jpg

I do NOT have that option. Input 1& 2 have it but no others. You can see the monitor setting is set to 1& 2. But changing it to ANYTHING, even all has no bearing- the screenshot is still the same as far as input control. Focusrite said it's not an issue as long as I keep on gain staging.

I missed the bit about the pre amp. Normally you run a mike  pre amp into a line level input. Otherwise you are still using the Focusrite mike pre amp. So it defeats the reason for using a different pre amp.
And as Mr Dickens pointed out inputs show as

    Left 1 = input 1

    Right 1 = input 2

Stereo 1 = is when you use both and will create a stereo track in cakewalk so you don’t use that unless your inputting a stereo device.
But your interface line inputs are properly on the back.

I have tech question into Focusrite. I want to use the warm audio WA12 but since it only has "balanced" outputs 1 xlr and 1 balanced trs (which can be used simultaneously btw) I don't see how I can change what the focusrite preamps see. With my guitar, FRactal Audio gear still (since 2009) now FM9. I use analog outs and Focusrite told me that the 18i20 sees that as line level. Haven't gotten an answer about using the WA12 yet.

So what are they seeing from the Warm Audio preamp? I s no way to change it in the 18i20 interface.

  15. @bdickensTHANKS - OK now have both sides of the headphones when recording vocals. I honestly believe I had (probably have) severeeal things set wrong TBH,

I would be willing to PAY Focusrite for a phone conversation but I doubt they do that. Also, don't know if they have US based support of that type. Overseas would be a bit costly.
ANYWAY, thanks to all you folks. So appreciated!

  16. Thanks guys. Issu is I need to learn the interface. Very new to me. With Echo Layla 3G for the last decade++ I never had these issue. Mainly I guess because it was a much simplier AI. It was 8x8 but still very straightforward.

I finally did get audio while recording vocals out of both sides of the headphones. Mainly in the interface I believe.
The 18i20 is very much overkill for me, but I tend to do that in my musical life-buy above my actual needs. 😞

I also beieve I am making a mistake using the mic (Stellar CM5) into the warm audio then into the Scarlett.  I need to remove the warm audio and see what the difference is. The wa12 (orig one) lets you use both the unbalanced (TRS) output and the xlr output at the same time. But, the guess the xlr out of Warm audio 12 to 18i20 xlr input is seeing a different signal than the trs i\o, according to focusrite support.

See, I am totally confused and tempoted to put my echo layla 3G back in (pci card with adalpter for PCIe (that's why I removed it.

    confusing aren't I.

    Thanks again

BTW Andres, I have never had to use echo on the tracks ever. Guess because I use a mixer to monitor while recording.

Outs from 18i20 or echo at the time  go into the mixer for monitoring

  17. I know this question is asked a lot but I cannot find an answer. I have created mono tracks. I have tried L then R the Stereo inputs (Focusrite 18i20.
I have changed the interweave or whatever . Nothing helps.

I CAN record and playback my vocals in Stereo? But for the life of me I cannot monitor the vocal while recording in both sides of headphones Beyer 770's, good headphones. Projects play back in BOTH sides so I am totally confused-------------again, he sighs!

  18. Have atm Stellar CM5 Large D Tube Mic. It's big and heavy and the shock mount is annoying. It is old Sounds OK but I have been looking for something better.

Maybe under $1,000. Prefer large diaphram condensers-Don't need tube but would be OK. I was recommended the Shure SM7B. Bought it, tried it but didn't like it. I didn't buy the cloud lifter because I have a warm Audio WA12 mic pre (old but a good one) Plus I have a Focusrite 18i20 with some nice pres also.

Any suggestions? For my home studio, only MY vocals. I have a powerful kind of high voice. Think Sunspot Baby or CCR and then Peg.

Any suggestions appreciated. I just am, well, tired of the CM5.....Want to try something new. But I do want large D condenser.

    Thanks

  19. Time to call it a night. Once again sorry.

I should post though that it was a stereo\mono whatever issue. Input 3 has my ACTUAL recording mic input and output so 4 was not available in drop down menu, 3 was of course.

I moved the test\monitor OM7 mic to input 7 on 18i20 an routed to mixer accordingly and all is fine.

So much to learn about this 18i20............
