  1. CosmicDolphin, can you please explain what you mean by: "need something fast and deeply integrated" ... How is Kontakt or Halion VST's are less integrated or "not fast". Sorry if I sound silly, I am a learner and always hungry for new info. Puddy... I think you changed the subject a bit from requesting for sampler to a much wider request. Here is my take. If you walk into a bakery and request a cheeseburger... even if they make one on "special request" I do not think it will be a magical moment for the taste buds. And of course wise versa, if you walk into a burger joint and request a cannoli, I do not believe that would be worth spending money on. I tried whole bunch of DAWs. I always came back to Cakewalk. I love it dearly for the workflow, tracking, touch navigation, excellent forum etc. I guess it is closely related to the type of music I tinker with ... But at the same time I do not believe a DAW (any DAW) should be a Jack of all trades. I think Meng and Bakers took the right path by fixing things that were long due and polishing it, instead of rolling out completely new features without addressing stability issues. Again, I am all in for sampler +rompler+ tone generator and preferably that would have a full GM2 and other synths maps, that would eat SFz / SF2 / WAV, etc. formats. TTS1 is loooong due for overhaul... but for now, I wish to Meng and crew all the best, and to continue their great work in supporting the best free DAW that exists in the world today, giving a chance to people of all social strata to create music professionally.
  2. A basic sampler might be good idea, +1, but I think 3d party stuff will always be better, just because developers of that soft been working on things for some time now. What about Halion or Kontakt? They do have samplers that can do pretty complex stuff.
  3. Nice! Worked like magic! Synkrotron, Thank you for your efforts and graphics! I see what you are saying about buses, and it does make sense, but for my projects gain automation is exactly what I need. Noel, Thank you for confirming! Best regards, Misha.
  4. Hi Folks. Please see attached image. I would like to know if it is possible to "tail" the effect (lets assume reverb or delay) of the piece in the red box? As you can see volume automation is set to mute the take lane after the phrase in red box.., so when effect is present in the bin, it will die as soon as it hits the volume node. So what should I do, if I want for effect to continue for "some time" after the phrase in outlined in red box? I must admit, I forgot how to do these kind of things. I used to know with older Cakewalk (20 years back), but I think the process has changed. P.S. I do not want to "render" FX to audio. Thank you in advance, Misha.
  5. Craig, Thanks! I read and re-read what you said... I know that you are very familiar with Cakewalk, and I was surprised why the drag thing did not retain mutes and automation for me. Then.... I figured it out. It was closer than my nose. I was trying to create "new" audio track in destination project and paste things there, mutes were not retained from source...but when I dragged selected track from source to empty space of destination project it dragged over everything. Thank you!
  6. Craig, ok... Thanks for post. Ok, so folder copy is out of the question (hopefully will happen one day) This is where I get stuck. Lets do it with round numbers for the sake of example. I have 5 tracks about 50 take lanes in each = 250 take lanes. About 200 are muted / 50 un-muted. When I drag, or copy and paste to new project, mutes on take lanes are not preserved I have all 250 takes play simultaneously.... 😮 I want those muted items there, since I might choose something over something at later time.
  7. msmcleod, yep, that is the goal Here another scenario. One person does music/mixing another vocals. When I work on the song, I might have 200+ vocal takes of various elements etc. Intuitively, I would just share the folder to the person who does the rest, so they can "pick" what works better. And many, many other uses for the sharing track folder between projects. Before jumping to "request" section, I want to hear from veteran(s), maybe it is possible with some obscure workaround? Thanks.
  8. And how exactly it will help? I will have a project with a single track folder with tracks and track "take lanes" in that folder, most of which are muted.... But how do I import that folder to another project?
  9. Insert track template does not work, as it does not retain take lanes (places) and mutes. It imports a single take lane into new project. Freezing will not be good choice too, because it copies only "unmuted" lanes. Strange, I thought there would be a way...
  10. Man, I saw that "template" thing today, but I thought, it has something to do with template without content. Bill, if it works, huge thank you! I am in the middle of the project, but will try it in the morning.
  11. msmcleod, Thanks, but it does not work well, because copy/paste track command does not preserve "mutes" on take lanes. So when I paste track on new project dozens of take lanes play simultaneously
  12. Today is my noob day Can somebody please let me know if it is possible to move a "track folder" from one project to another. Track folder contains several tracks with about 100 or so take lanes in them most of them are muted of course.., but I do want to keep it like this. Please let me know. Thank you.
  13. Scook, very cool feature! Thank you! After X1, I had "Home edition" so never got to learn it. Opens a huge door! In my case it was trickier than I thought. I mentioned 5 Midi + 5Audio for the sake of the example, actually there was more than 30 tracks and some of these had cross-over notes to next bars etc. Of course, I am far from the workflow of the guy in the video, but surely was a great lesson for today! CatusMusic, Thank you! Since I had some cross over notes, I worked out something in the middle, close to what you suggested. Old school + ripple editing.
  14. Hi Fellows and Gals. Hoping for good suggestion on this. I made a backing track for the song which consist of 5 audio + 5 midi tracks. I realized at a later time that I want another verse+chorus. Ending and other parts are already in place. I do not want to re-record whole thing, but to use something that is already there. Meaning I can identify start/end points on the timeline and destination point... Lets assume, "destination" is somewhere in the middle of the project. I really do not want to do this "free hand" drag method and I do not want to mix things to have them on single track ... There is also a small catch. I do have some vocals recorded, so I do not want to touch those tracks when doing this. Can somebody please share "smart" method on how to take section of 5audio+5midi tracks and copy (insert) them to the middle, so everything on the right moves correspondingly? Thank you!
  15. A possible solution for future members and guests. What really resolved Halion crashes (c000005) for me was full re-install of Nvidea drivers. I resolved it by "blind" method, but then it was confirmed by Halion tech in Germany. No more c000005 crashes for me.
  16. Jon, Thank you. Not sure what helped, seems to be stable for now. I reinstalled whole Halion Suite (not just Sonic) and Licence manager. Fingers crossed, so far no crashes for 2+ hours. It is freaking Halion thing. Cakewalk was super stable for me for the past 60 or so songs. If it will crash again, I will try your method of resetting VST before re-scan. Hopefully Halion is happy now.
  17. Thanks, but as I mentioned in my post, everything is (Halion 6) fresh install (from Steinberg download manager) so all stuff is up to date. My guess it is either driver (video) or some sort of security issue... All drivers are fresh install too from chipset to video... Unfortunately do not even know what I should look for.
  18. Hi Folks. Have new system issues (never happened on old setup) Halion Sonic VST crashes Cakewalk every time. Some time from the start, at times 5-10 minutes after. Error c000005. Screenshot is at the bottom. How it is setup: i7/win10/32g ram. I run computer as administrator (all privileges )Halion Sonic 3 is on e-licenser. I have done e-licenser "maintenance", so everything is up to date. Fresh version on Sonic directly from Steinberg (not update of previous version). Fresh install of Cakewalk about 2 weeks ago. I thought Cakewalk was having trouble with VST3, so I removed that, re-scanned VST and tried VST2 of Sonic.., still crashes. I wrote to Steinberg but as I understood, it might take weeks before they respond, not necessarily resolving the issue. This forum (usually) rocks! So I will try my luck here. I have the minidump from Cakewalk, but not sure what to do with it. Would appreciate a good start point of trying to resolve this. Thank you!
  19. Yep, this topic went wondering, but it kind of remained within scope of "reducing CPU usage". I actually learned a couple of interesting things from some side stuff mentioned. Twisted Fingers, I think you and I share the mania of using many instances of same VSTs I gave up on Izotope newer products for this specific reason (CPU usage - topic) Their older stuff (Nektar 2 suite) runs fine with multiple instances with several modules ticked on each. They make nice plugins, but only if you have a rocket of a machine or use only a couple of instances to have things run smooth. I found that switching to other, similar plugins made major difference in CPU usage. I guess the key here is simply keeping the balance of resources available.
  20. Scook, is it possible to "assign" this PaUsE button to some other button? I could not figure that out also Thank you.
  21. ien, thank you for balanced answer. This is what I have i7 7600U 2 CPU cores 2.8 - turbo 3.9 GHz, I was thinking of upgrading to the comp with 8650U, but seems not much of the upgrade is there, even when it has double the cores of my setup... The 7600U was not the first choice of computer for audio recording, but I had it and that is what I am using. Here is note to skeptics. I had doubts initially, but after almost a year of testing, I must say it runs Cakewalk absolutely great with 5-7 instances of CPU hungry VSTs, such as Neutron, Nectar, Kontakt etc. on about 12 audio tracks (some of them with multiple takes) +5-8 midi channels.
  22. Msmcleod, thank you for detailed information. Yes, I have read the blog you mentioned prior to posting. I guess, these are what tripped me off: 1) "Most programs still function in a linear fashion, making use of only one core. In these cases, clock speed is king." 2) Why "load balancing" was not set by default in Cakewalk, as it seems to make more sense of having it checked for efficiency...? I guess the essence of my question is related to Cakewalk specifically. Does it use core efficiently or "just makes use of them". speed vs cores
  23. Kaustub, thank you for input. SomeGuy, thanks, I do understand difference between "U" and "H". My question is not about general choices of a computer or laptop. My question is more specific: Tracking / handling of VST in Cakewalk...which resource is more important / responsible for handling things better # of cores or speed? *And sub question. Assuming it is speed of a single core (linear) that plays main role, does "Turbo Boost" number makes any difference or it is minimal for the tracking/VST? I used " plug-in load balancing" that Scook suggested and It got the project I am working at under control, but buffer is more than I want to be. I am amateur musician and I know my limits for DAW recording. Meaning, I can "predict" my largest project . I do not need an expensive gaming machine for that. There are very specific laptops I am looking at, that fits my budget and want to make educated choice, so it handles tracking and VST better than my current setup. Would appreciate an answer from somebody with specific knowledge to answer my question(s). Thank you.
  24. abacab thanks, that does not answer the specific question I asked. I will repeat it , because some folks have tendency of answering to last/previous poster rather than initial question: Cakewalk ... how it handles VST plugins and tracking? If I have to choose more cores - less frequency vs more frequency less cores, what would be a better choice?Particulary i7 7600U 2 CPU cores with Hyper-Threading support clocked at 2.8 - 3.9 GHz (2 core Turbo also 3.9 GHz) OR i7-8650U four cores but at a lower base frequency of 1.9 GHz. The Turbo Boost can go up to 4,2 GHz ? Thank you.
  25. One older article I found online on subject "More cores - less frequency vs more frequency less cores" had this: " Faster clock speeds means more responsiveness when running heavy linear tasks such as running single-threaded applications. Most programs still function in a linear fashion, making use of only one core. In these cases, clock speed is king." Can anybody shine a light this and if it relates to Cakewalk on how it handles VST plugins and tracking? If I have to choose between: more cores - less frequency vs more frequency less cores, what would be a better choice? Particulary i7 7600U 2 CPU cores with Hyper-Threading support clocked at 2.8 - 3.9 GHz (2 core Turbo also 3.9 GHz) vs i7-8650U four cores but at a lower base frequency of 1.9 GHz. The Turbo Boost can go up to 4,2 GHz ? Main concern is which of these CPUs will handle better multiple instances of VST on separate tracks and tracking (no "bouncing" or archiving or freezing advise please. This is a specific CPU question) Thank you.
