Free version of Cakewalk Sonar now available

It is identical to using Cakewalk with the only obvious exception of a Nag bar infer the menu bar.

It is a vastly improved version that is totally supported.

Only negative to some is the graphics are not to everyone’s taste and there is no theme editor to fix this. i  switched to Sonar over a year ago and I really never noticed after a week.

We are just sorting out questions of if certain add ins included with Cakewalk that are not included in this version will be ported over.

So far it’s a very short list of things missing mostly plugins.

Why? Because it’s a very good marketing tool. Example it has me thinking that I can return to using Sonar.

And already on my Video’s comments someone said that they installed it and they decided to buy a membership. Free software leads to sales.

I poked around all last night and my conclusion is if you transition from Cakewalk there will be nothing missing as far as I can tell. Only Drum replacer for some odd reason.
I’m not sure what would be missing if you were a first time user and didn’t have prior versions installed. For sure TTS-1 would be missing.

But Boost 11, Sonitus and the stock pro channel are all there.
Anyway people should check it out for themselves. Nothing to lose lots to gain. My prediction is that very soon you will have to anyway.

The orange Toasty Sonar reminder only occurs when you're online.  I might be concerned if my DAW is offline because I won't see it or know why CbB is shutting down in the middle of a session or project when a date sensitive detonation device that may have been implanted in the final update goes off.  O.o

While Testing the free Sonar should these paths be change?
The "Project"  paths are changed to keep projects separate, however I'm not sure about these "Audio Data" and "Picture Cache".

:\Cakewalk Sonar Projects

Pref>Audio Data

:\Cakewalk Projects\Picture Cache

If people start dropping back from the subscription to free, that’s not good. There must be a plan.

Not necessarily. Example I had 100% switched to another Daw. I rebuilt my computer and only had installed Platinum as a “just in case “.

Now I have Sonar again and without the membership. This keeps me as a Sonar user! Possibly I even switch back because I end up liking Sonar better than the other Daw. I don’t know that yet as Im rebuilding my studio and don’t have any time for recording right now.

I saw another old time Sonar user who had switched to the same Daw Im using asking about the new Free Sonar.

My video has had over 300 views in only one day and that’s very high for my channel. A lot of my subscribers switched over to other Daw’s.
A free version is available and only a fool would not grab it. Especially long time users who went elsewhere because now they can open old projects without having to install Splat.

I have a feeling that they looked at the numbers they gathered from their “Login “ system and Cakewalk probability still has way more users that Sonar.
Nobody on the music internet has said anything about Sonar. Nobody has even made any You Tubes. It was shrinking fast while the Daw I bought has been growing.

This move will work the way the free Cakewalk move worked. It is still a mystery why they bumbled along like they did for the last 2 years.

I would be willing to pay a one-time fee to keep CBB, in case anyone from the company is listening.  If not and CBB disappears can we keep using sonar with the nag screen indefinitely?

I agree, I'm tired of the company doing all this versions messing with my recording history. I've paid for sonar. Then they stopped producing it a little later, then they offered a free version to fix bugs, and now they're offer a different lite version with missing features and a lower quality 2D screen interface, and a black color I hate and strain my eyes to see? That's like going backwards from a 3D colorful interface, and tons of legacy features. The only wy I'd personally upgrade back to Sonar again after paying once is is they offer a one time fee option. It's just not worth it to go from a full featured CBB 3D user interface and a bunch of legacy features to a slimed down 2D user interface with only a black screen that looks more like CAD program than a Recording Mixer Audio Workstation to me.  I love the look of the CBB and the New Sonar let alone the free version just don't give me that legacy DAW look or option. So I'll probably stay with CBB until a new Microsoft Windows makes it obsolete.
