Pet Sounds Vs. Sgt. Pepper

Speaking just for myself, it was never a competition, though for others it clearly was.

Disclaimer: Back in the day, I bought Pet Sounds; my older brother had Sgt Pepper. I know I borrowed his and listened to it; not sure if he borrowed mine.  I also listened to the Rolling Stones as well as The Beatles, despite the alleged competition (which today we could consider it to be fake news). Then again, I was always pro choice but that didn't stop me from having a friend who was anti-choice.

I never got all the fuss about them

Cheers Shane. To each his own but I actually love the early Beach Boys songs and stuff like California Girls & Good Vibrations. I think Brian was a genius and Beach Boys harmonies were absolutely outstanding IMO.

PS.  The Beatles Suck!!!

(Just kidding 🤣)

There comes a time in every party, usually around the 13th beer or the bottom of the 2nd bottle of wine,  when I pull out a copy of Pet Sounds and repeatedly treat my guests to God Only Knows, the natural consequence of which is the subsequent hunt for isolated vocal tracks on YouTube...

Just in case you weren't convinced that Brian was a frickin' genius...

I was convinced a long time ago but it was great seeing those songs' harmonic and rhythm textures broken down in such detail. Brian Wilson took Phil Spector's 'wall of sound' and turned it up to 11.

At least Macca is still around.

He's arguably the last 20th Century Pop Musical Genius still alive.

There is more than one left.  Jagger, Gilmour, Waters, Fogherty, Sting, Simon, Plant, Bryne...the list is actually pretty long as all of these created massively popular music and many critical hits a piece.

And most of them have probably created better music in the 21st century than Paul did to boot.

The thing that sets McCartney and the Beatles apart is, they wrote and recorded their music themselves. Espwcially in the early years. They never had The Wrecking Crew backing them other than George Martin's input.

Sting was a good businessman, but a writing legend he is not ....

As an "audio engineer" myself I certain appreciate the work involved in that, but it doesn't really speaks to ones actual musical abilities at a deep level.  I know lots of well respected engineers that couldn't write a tune if their life depended on it.

I'm not a huge Sting fan but he is a writing legend and I can't even imagine arguing against it.
