mark skinner Posted March 31 Posted March 31 (edited) Hello , I recently finished building a cigarbox style lap steel. This is my first attempt at playing and recording it. I'm pretty slow with it and not used to using a slide. Hopefully some trickier stuff will come later.. Regardless of how you feel about the lyrics , feedback and suggestions for improvement would be nice . I'm getting pretty fed up .. https://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=14974880 Edited April 4 by mark skinner 4
garybrun Posted March 31 Posted March 31 When you wrote before you working on a slide guitar I was looking forward to hearing it. It sounds great. I am sure you will master this.. why are you getting fed up? Hang in there pal. 1
hsmusic Posted April 1 Posted April 1 Keep up the work if you can, it fits & complements your music nicely. 2
treesha Posted April 2 Posted April 2 I enjoyed the song and think it works well! So I dont have any suggestions, just encouraging you to keep at it. 1
Larry T. Posted April 3 Posted April 3 Sounds great. You've got the slide guitar groove happening perfectly through out the song. Vox sound great. Great work. Enjoyed very much 🎶 🎵 1
Marshall Posted April 3 Posted April 3 I’m not knowledgeable enough in the nuances of lap steel playing. All I know is that to my ears this sounds like a terrific song, and well played. 1
Mr No Name Posted April 3 Posted April 3 great song, reminds me of driving a big american car down a big empty freeway, A feedback or suggestion would be to change the fade out at the end, its a bit linear and long. Listening to the rest of your songs as we speak, very nice stuff. 1
freddy j Posted April 11 Posted April 11 This is a great song. I wish I could only handle a slide as good as you are playing on this song. The performances are great, the mix is good, and you have captured that swampy sound of the South. 1
mark skinner Posted April 11 Author Posted April 11 Thanks to "Everyone" who listened and commented on this one. Sorry to @garybrun, @hsmusic , @treesha , @Larry T. , @Marshall , @Mr No Name , @freddy j. I thought I had responded back , but apparently I didn't. I'm calling this one done but.. I've been working on it All week playing with my own mastering . I'm normally happy with mine until I get an impressive one from Gary. Always a Lot to learn. Thanx , mark 1 1
T Boog Posted April 12 Posted April 12 (edited) Cheers Mark. First, if that's ur cigarbox lap steel in the pic, you did a great job. It looks awesome. Second, I love the vibe of the song and the imagery. And as always, I love ur voice. You have a great Stephen Stills type voice with a cool, lazy delivery. I LOVE it! Anyway, if it were me, in time Id def revisit this song and give it a couple of verses using a diff vocal melody(or perhaps just spoken word) and I'd prob put a diff chord progression in the verses to create a bit of musical variation, while being careful not to get too fancy and lose that laid back feel. I'd use those verses to try to tell a cool story(maybe of a journey down south and how a voodoo woman did me wrong) . Yeah, right now it feels like it's all variations of the chorus. A couple of verses would help give the song more depth(musically & lyrically) and it'd make it feel more complete. Maybe some reading on Swamp folklore could get ur gears turning again. Btw, I know a little something about the swamp. I live right in the middle of it. I'm in Cajun country in South Louisiana. Hey, maybe we could swap houses for a while. Afterall, you want someone to take you TO the swamp and I want someone to take me OUT of the damn swamp. 🐊 👀 (😁) Edited April 12 by T Boog 2
mark skinner Posted April 12 Author Posted April 12 (edited) @T Boog , Thanks for the compliments and Great suggestions. I probably will try another "Swampy" one later. My biggest problem right now is just playing the thing. That was my first attempt and don't know the neck yet , ecpecially in an open tuning. I believe it's my first song not using a standard guitar in a song at all. I'll probably use the lap steel for backing against a standard guitar in the next one. I have relatives in Lafayette and have spent some time there in vodoo country. Before he passed my uncle was a chiropractor there and sometimes traded work for learning voodoo practices from some of the older patients. He had some interesting stories. ms Edited April 12 by mark skinner 3
Bajan Blue Posted April 12 Posted April 12 Hi Mark Love the sound of slide Guitar and this sounds great - just something about that slide guitar sound and tone! Love it Nigel 1
T Boog Posted April 12 Posted April 12 36 minutes ago, mark skinner said: I have relatives in Lafayette Oh cool. Yeah, Lafayette is about 2 hrs northwest from me. I'm in Bayou Lafourche/ Bayou Terrebonne area. But I was born in New Iberia which is very close to Lafayette. And yeah, I feel you on the open tuning thing. However there is something cool about not knowing the neck well in an open tuning. When u can't fall back on standard shapes and theory, u end up using ur ear more and it usually ends ups sounding more unique and inspired. When it comes to creativity, I find sometimes ignorance is bliss. 1 2
steve@baselines.com Posted April 16 Posted April 16 Hi Mark - this is well put together. I love your vocals on it, they fit the song perfectly. Great job. Steve 1
steve@baselines.com Posted April 16 Posted April 16 Oh - I forgot to mention that I love your skeleton on the mixing console, that is really funny. 2
Kevin Walsh Posted April 17 Posted April 17 Great song, Mark, that see-gar box doohicky sounds amazing! Loved the song and I agree with the comment above on the Stills vibe. You nailed the swamp thang for sure. Excellent mix and master to my poor ears. 1 1
treesha Posted April 18 Posted April 18 I wanted to leave another comment about your song because after maybe 2 listens at my first comment it’s still stuck in my head ha. Pleasantly. I’ve been sharing it with a few people who would appreciate it. And the instrument you made is a beauty. 1 1
