Often wonder if MS will back down on the TMP stuff..  Maybe they should have an "enterprise" distro.   MS is for corporations 1st and home users are somewhere down the line.

These always have the smell of the pro Linux.   Rare to see anti Apple but always against MS.    I'm still using this home built PC from 2010.  My iPad from 2010 is not as useful/

I'm not sure charities take desktops and laptops anymore.  Most laptops have inferior batteries to anything Apple.

We live in a time where the average person is using Android or Apple.

There's always the "you're not protected crowd".   Isn't that always the risk anytime you boot anything up?

As if PCs were plain useless without those precious security updates that never kept Jerry from getting malware or worse.

Viva la Windows 7 and ok, 10.

When XP came out it took me awhile to move from W2K.  It was XP lite,

Most people skipped Vista,

I recently saw somewhere that they are not backing down on the new hardware requirements, but you can keep it running past EOL by paying MS to keep the security side of it updated so you dont get hacked.

No more bug fixes or new features, but you can pay to keep the security side of it up to date.

I saw it mentioned in a pc builders youtube video I was watching and I've never heard of that before. So, I don't know if it's true.

"It seems even more unlikely that those 58.7 percent will be paying $61 per year for Microsoft’s Extended Security Update program, which will bring continued patches to Windows 10 PCs after October 2025."

there you go. they can extend it but you must pay.

fwiw, windows defender (security updates)  can be replaced with any 3rd party security program, also people forget microsoft themselves are the number one hackers of your computer. the code changes that software and websites continually change will render the OS obsolete long before security updates.  i.e "this software is not compatible with windows 10",  developers are not going to do that for many years. they would be foolish to.

gamers certainly don't!

Candy Crush and Angry Bird players would beg to differ either you. 😁

Android is an open source operating system. You can even customize your cell. Apps such as banking require certain security programs running and they will not work if you do though.

I work on point of sales systems. Those touchscreen machines they use in restaurants and bars and retail stores. All the ones we sell and service run on Android.

I tried this on a number of systems / laptops the last while. More often than not i downgraded to windows 10 again because win11 is a complete hog in comparison to the more "refined" windows 10 ( has the age advantage ).  The slickness of Windows 10 took a while to get to, no dount same for windows 11.

Yes i suppose there is an element of hardware ability here, windows 11 wants the core i7+ and loadsa ram etc to perform properly. In the game dev world its like Epic Enreal Engine, nothing but a very high spec system will do .. other than that forget it

I’ve switched over a decade ago, so my power user days are far behind but I use Windows for work and they recently upgraded everything to 11. I am not overly fond of it.

Of course, I was a little disappointed to find that I could no longer move the taskbar. I’ve always preferred it on top, even years before I switched to Mac. It’s just how I am used to work. Not really a big deal, but I miss it.

The one big shock was the fact that the search bar was unusable after the laptop lost connectivity - that made troubleshooting said connectivity issues a little bit more complex than it would have otherwise been.

I am also seeing odd little things, like all audio being randomly muted at startup, or hyper compressed microphone signal - but if you play with the software volume slider a little it goes back to normal. Just sucks to have to dig for that constantly. And disabling “Listen to this device” (input monitoring) seems to have no effect.

And there’s the more frequent  internet drop-offs - but to be fair, these could potentially be hardware-related or may have something to do with specific software on this machine. That being said, I had similar connectivity issues with the previous (W10) laptop (a similar HP Elitebook) and it got so bad that I ended up buying an ethernet cable for it. But the issue eventually disappeared. I figured it had to do with a Windows update.

I still think the HP hardware doesn’t help - internet speed tests on my old 2020 iMac show results 30% faster on average. Unfortunately, these new laptops do not have an ethernet port.

Besides that, a few inexplicable glitches, but nothing extraordinary.

I don’t dislike it as intensely as the most recent version of Mac OS (the very worse I have seen on that platform), but given the option, I personally would have stuck with 10. It did all I needed and was fairly reliable. But I am an old man now, and I am not big on change.
