As noted, it's not a problem when the transport is running, only when stopped, so you have to actually look at the state of button or be monitoring some live input to know that the audio engine has turned off. As soon as you run the transport, it's going to restart automatically.

Done it both ways. Audio engine never switches off

Thanks for confirming. Good to know it's not universal. Can you PM me a copy of your AUD.INI file so I can compare configurations?

I don't see it when drag-dropping from a track to a VSTi or vice versa, nor when dragging MIDI into a project from File Explorer - only when dragging MIDI out to file.

I can drag to desk top no issue.

Maybe David will find something in the AUD.INI file.

Unfortunately I'm not finding anything. If not a configuration issue, I think it's likely  audio-driver-specific and not OS-dependent because I'm seeing it on both Win10 and Win11.

What I'm thinking.  Comparing specs & settings may eliminate or confirm this.

Currently ProChannel (switched on or off) is causing audio spikes and drops here for unknown reasons.

Hmmm. No idea how/why, but it's only certain midi and certain drag/drop actions that cause the Engine to stop.

Example:

> In Sonar Media browser, I can drag a (built-in) SmartLoop Midi file out to my Desktop, or into a track and then drag the clip out to my Desktop Engine does not stop,

> However... if I browse to a third-party folder on my PC (tried with EZ Drummer, Groove Monkee, Modo Drumes, etc.), I can drag a midi clip out to my Desktop or into a track and the Engine does not stop. But if I drag the clip from the track to my Desktop, the Engine stops.

No idea why. Maybe @msmcleod can see a pattern/cause?

Do you have Sonar set to share the audio device with other apps in preferences? If so when the focus changes from the app the audio engine is intentionally stopped. Dragging a clip to desktop is possibly changing the app focus. Turn off that setting and retest.
Also - depending on what clip you are dragging from Sonar, the app may need to render the audio. If it does that it has to interrupt the audio engine (similar to export audio). However we should be restarting the engine after that - if not its an oversight.

Turn that option off.

I mentioned earlier that I verified "Suspend Audio Engine..." is not enabled in Sonar. And even with that option enabled in CbB, the engine is interrupted only for a moment before the clip is dropped outisde the UI. With it disabled in CbB, there's no interruption at all.

Yes, I see the same. The interruption is normal while it bounces audio but then it resumes normally for me.
I however did have one instance where it was not resuming so perhaps there is some corner case where this happens. Perhaps its dropping out.

Just to be clear, I'm talking about dragging Midi, not audio.

> When I drag an audio clip out of Sonar all is good
> When I drag a "Sonar" midi clip (e.g., SmartLoop clip) out all is good
> When I drag a third-party midi clip out from a track (or from the Media Browser) the Engine stops.

@Noel Borthwick This is a  pretty interesting observation. I can confirm that dragging a MIDI Groove Clip out does not stop the audio engine. Bounce that same clip to normal MIDI, and it will stop the engine when dragged out to the file system.

Interesting... Maybe it is a Midi issue within Sonar and not related to third-party Midi?
