Notes_Norton Posted May 8, 2021 Posted May 8, 2021 Capriccio Italien - Pyotr Tchaikovsky - Igor Manasherov, Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra I love this piece of music. The simple one note "ta ka ta ta" theme finds its way all over this piece of music in different speeds, octaves and instruments. And in the middle there is the part that the Moody Blues quoted in "Days of Future Passed". I haven't heard this version, each conductor puts his/her own stamp on it. I have one at home by Antal Dorati that I can't find on UTube, and since I'm not familiar with this conductor, I'll give it a go. 1
jackson white Posted May 9, 2021 Posted May 9, 2021 Something completely different, but somehow irresistible (was pinged to check this out, had my cursor on close tab for the entire video, and then had to dig deeper...) 1
craigb Posted May 9, 2021 Posted May 9, 2021 Not sure WTF I was watching, but I couldn't hit stop either! 1

From an NPR post on "The Post-Brexit New Wave" "But there is something happening in the United Kingdom and Ireland, a cohort of very good bands who meet this vague, wordy description — Squid, Dry Cleaning, Shame, Courting, Sleaford Mods, Yard Act, The Cool Greenhouse, Home Counties, Billy Nomates, Legss, Fontaines D.C., Working Men's Club and Black Country, New Road among them. ... Today, the wave of like-minded new bands from this part of the world is approaching something like critical mass, and its leading lights have begun releasing some of the most exciting debut albums and EPs so far this year. Whatever is happening, it's hard to ignore." ... Something good just had to come out of the pandemic/Brexit mess of 2020.
Notes_Norton Posted May 11, 2021 Posted May 11, 2021 I'm in need of some good classic sax jazz today so here is one of my favorites by Mr. T. The Baddest Turrentine - Stanley Turrentine (full album) 1

There is a huge tone difference in playing bass and guitar with the (right hand) fingers like Wes Montgomerey / Jeff Beck aso and the contrabass player in the vids above. I don´t practice playing without using picks much and will change that again. Edited May 14, 2021 by Pragi
Pragi Posted May 15, 2021 Posted May 15, 2021 (edited) Imo some other outstanding Jazz musicians: Moanin' - Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers - Live Message from Kenya Edited May 15, 2021 by Pragi 1
Notes_Norton Posted May 15, 2021 Posted May 15, 2021 (edited) @Pragi Jeff Beck and Wes are absolutely awesome guitarists. I watched the video of Jeff Beck live at Ronnie Scott's and my jaw dropped. Being a saxophonist who was lucky enough to play with a number of very great guitarists, I'm not awestruck very easily. I consider Jeff the most technically competent rock/pop guitarist going. The camera people must have played guitar in that video, because they knew where to focus when Jeff was doing superhuman things. Wes has always been a favorite too. I'm OK on the guitar, but it is my 7th instrument, so I'll never be in the same class as the greats. That's OK, as I progress I keep getting better at it, and that pleases me. Jeff @ Ronnie's Edited May 15, 2021 by Notes_Norton 1
craigb Posted May 15, 2021 Posted May 15, 2021 Not only does that live video truly showcase what Beck is capable of, it was pretty much the moment that everyone was introduced to the talent that is Tal! When she goes into the zone during the show, you can see Beck smiling in that "the girl HAS it!" type of look. Good stuff!

Jeff @ Ronnie's @Notes_Norton I have to agree, the technical skills of J.B. playing Fusion aso are awesome, but ,except the last 10 - 15 years, he imo has had a cold style of playing. The last 10- 15 years are imo the best of his career, he is playing with more "feel" which is more astonishing considering his "level".(born 1944.) The sound of Wes playing all the stings/ Notes ? with the thumb I have never heard again. UPP feat.
