Any one use Cloud Storage?

Just looking into Cloud storage in general vs USB Drives .. the latter can fail. I notice services like iDRIVE have 5TB per annum at less than $100 PA. I also have the 1TB with my Office 365, but onedrive is more a syncing service.

A reason i am thinking to have such a service is not alone a place to backup CW project files and samples to the cloud BUT also maybe a place to store KONTAKT instruments etc and also maybe plugins like IK Multimedia stuff which has time limits on when you can download them. Also to store copy of VSTs in general. All this so as to cover an evetuallity that your drives/systems go down. Yip iDRIVE has a drive imaging feature, but in my case I use CW on 2 seperate systems but both have same Kontakt stuff, vsts etc

So any other services people using? Carbonite, Sugarsync, Box, Amazon Drive etc

ON SAMPLES - At the moment I have all my samples - lots of them - out on a USB Drive.

I also subscribe to LOOPCLOUD so have gotten used to the idea and like the idea of Loops in the cloud where they can be auditioned there and only brought down to system into a project when needed. With the loopcloud plan you get 50GB storage included. My drive has approx 400GB of samples :D

So just wondering are others here using cloud storage for samples and is there other services aside from loopcloud for this?

Of course problem with amassing samples is its ENDLESS :D

.. in 808 and 909 samples alone. ?

In my case mostly FREE stuff I picked up over the years.

Interestingly I also have huge batch of old CDs from defunct music mags from the 90s on with lots of samples on those also. Very unique in fact as most of those samples were of the time and would not be available these days.

My internal 8tb samples hard drive  has 1.67tb free. I imagine cloud storage for my samples storage is not in my future.

Not sure if you have tried LOOPCLOUD yet and its plugin inside Cakewalk. Basically with loopcloud app open it links with CW so while playing a project in CW you can load samples from the LC cloud to audition along with your CW project without downloading them UNTIL you have the right one. The Loopcloud App UI also organises all your loops to type, BPM etc.

With loopcloud plan you get 50GB of free space but can upgrade in size. This allows you to upload your own samples also into the loopcloud and treat them like above. Thats why I like the cloud idea :D ...

I recently signed up for a free trial at Loopcloud. It could have been yesterday, it could have been several months ago - time has no meaning anymore. ?

I just checked and it's been nearly three weeks! What's happened to that time? I may have a new addiction.

It's all your fault Aidan. :D

Sorry for that @Wibbles .. But hey its a good addiction if you make the most of it and get the 26 free samples everyday. You will build up a nice library AND the advantage is all are stored in your Cloud Library in the LC App and dont need to be downloaded to CW until they audition/work with a track.

Plus if you go with a plan you build up a heck of alot of points every month that can used to buy more sample packs. All stored in the cloud after purchase. Dont forget with plans you also get 50GB+ of space in your library to upload your own samples and free up space on your HD.

If you sign in at the Loopmasters website, you can download as many of those free samples as you like - "Download Taster Pack" - and add them to your Loopcloud library.  You then have the option to upload them to your Cloud Library. No 26 sample limit.

Now back to those two dozen tracks I've half started in Loopcloud. :)

I use Carbonite for backup, it isn't cheap but it does seem to have a low footprint (runs as a background process) and is rock solid for recovery. It has saved me a few times as you can also access your data remotely on different devices. Fairly sure you can use your own private encryption key if you want better security.

OneDrive is cheaper but I've never really got on with it. Other than that I use local storage on the device.

Ditto, my 'projects drive' is backed up via Carbonite. My C drive is backed up using Acronis (to my NAS). My samples drive is not backed up (yet).

Can you explain your NAS a little? What software controls it? I'm thinking of building one from an old i5 cpu based mobo I have in a case. I even have a video card. Just need drives and older ram. But I can't seem to find info on what software it is that runs them.

If you're dealing with large number of large files (and especially if you're not running 1Gb Internet), Cloud based storage is a bit impractical.

Also note that scheduling and sync services constantly running is not ideal on a DAW.

To be honest, in my case im not interested in anything that syncs or runs in the background.

I already use ONEDRIVE like this. All syncing off and I dont have the Onedrive app running. I use it via the login at onedrive.microsoft, com and drag/drop files to my browser to upload/download manually.

I suppose another option for me is increase my onedrive 1TB to 2TB and if it aint broke dont fix it.

I just saw the 5TH at iDRIVE for $60 pa - https://www.idrive.com/pricing

And wondering could I use it like Onedrive .. manually so to speak. All I want is storage where I can have a copy of Kontakt libraries, VSTs and DAW project files and not on an external USB drive that could breakdown or fail

This iDRIVE is looking good @$52 for 5TB for a year.

You can also drag/drop from file explorer to browser window once the individual file is smaller than 2GB. You can also turn off sync. So basically you can use it for manually storing your files elsewhere other than local drive. Like in my case having a second copy of VSTs, Kontakt Libraries etc. If local system fails, just download all that again to new system from iDrive

Only flaw with iDrive is if you need to share files the other person has to have a free iDrive account also
