I had that 8-track! Wait, I still do!!!!! Little light on the bass, but still, fun for demos

The mini pc's have 2 prong adapters. I CAN use a 3 prong for one of the nucs, so I'll add that to the list for this weekend's test.

I ended up trying two different brand mini-computers "as is" with all the same cords, and there was no noise. I can't help to think it is somehow the PC. But this weekend, I will throw variables in.

I've used Disk Drill a few years back for a client, and did recover some data. Don't remember the cost.

Already have the replacement ...and 4 others to try!

I don't have another DAW. Not averse to the idea. Going to be a weekend of testing, and not recording. 🤮

@Amberwolf no onboard bluetooth/wifi. I use a usb wifi dongle which is unplugged except when I update. Onboard sound is disabled in device manager, with the only option being the AXE/IO. NUC had onboard wifi/bluetooth, which was disabled and had no noise. I had a thought about it being a driver, that's why I figured I might try a new install just for the heck of it. There really isn't much difference between the two machines in terms of swappable pieces. New speaker cables. New and old both do it, and I didn't go cheap on them.

The other one is a NUC computer. Just a small nothing burger of a machine. Not made for audio, I was just testing. Same drivers/settings on the AXE I/O Same physical outlet. Power cables - I've tried a few. Had some new heavy duty ones that had more shielding, and even used noise suppressor cable clips to no avail. That's why I am thinking the power supply or a fan primarily - neither of which I can do without getting the machine open ...but most likely what it is in my head. What is super strange is that it doesn't really make as much noise until AFTER I open a project, which seems weird. Now, I used the one test project in Sonar, so no issue with the settings on the project with vsts and such. Maybe the fans are dynamic and spin more after CPU load increases? I don't know. Just hoping it is NOT the board/cpu/ram - that WOULD SUCK.

Well well @Amberwolf, I borrowed a 3 prong to 2 and switched the usb cable, and WE ARE GOLDEN. Do I know which one? No. Will I dig further? Probably not. Making up for lost time atm! @Jim Roseberry I had been using a new Furman SS-6B for everything, so I wasn't too worried about that. I have an AXE/IO and Yamaha HS8 monitors. I am getting a buzz that sounds like jumbled alien communication on my pc(latest version of Sonar). Now, I have a spare machine to test(not nearly as robust, but good to test the theory), and what do you know ...the sample project in the latest version of Sonar the monitors are SILENT. So, not the project. It is a minimal install of Win11 install with just the AXE I/O driver and Sonar(all unnecessary devices disabled of course) . Same power outlet. Same cables. What I'm going to try: a new drive with nothing on it (not going to cause an issue) and try. I don't think that's it at all, but why the hell not. THEN, what next if I still get that buzz? What are the lower-impact things I can try, that I should try first? (I'm thinking fans to start) I don't want to pull the power supply until last as I'd have to buy a new one. I've moved to all of the usb slots to no avail. Nothing else is really plugged in. Replaced monitors not long ago, but still, no issue on the new machine. Any suggestions?

I think it is fun sometimes to record a bunch of tracks and have them super low in the mix for depth. Is it superfluous? Maybe. But sometimes it fits.

I look at that as "if I could paint the Mona Lisa once, I would". There is a difference between creation and touring; and I certainly don't envy artists(especially in the modern day) needing to make a living touring. I've always had a grandiose idea of music, and never cared if I could reproduce it live. But there are those that only want to do it if they can do it live (as it appears that Terry is in that camp). No wrong or right ...except to what we would PAY for.

The touring takes a toll for rock music. I still haven't seen rock singer at 70 that was as good as they were at even 50. Steve Perry, Paul Stanley, Bon Jovi, Axl Rose etc etc etc They can do it in the studio, but not for 2+ hours onstage for 100 dates.

And one of the BIGGEST REASONS: They sang at the high end of their range, or over it, and you don't keep that for too long in this life!

Ozzy was tuning down to like C#, and all the songs sound nothing like they should (especially the first 2 albums in standard). Paul Stanley was embarrassing himself for the last 3 years of KI$$ (and relying on a guide vocal). Bon Jovi flat out stole money the last tour he did (and he was never the best singer in Bon Jovi anyway). King's X still is decent, but dUg can't hit the highs anymore, and I can't blame him ...because he's 74!!!! But at least their tickets are ridiculously priced. I get a half-step for touring (say Toad the Wet Sprocket and Vertical Horizon for a couple), but they still sound good.

Sadly, the older I get, the more I won't go and see "legacy" 80's bands live. 90 times out of a 100, it is primarily because the singer has lost too many steps, and they tune a step down(sometimes to the absolute detriment of the songs). I believe too many bands of that era (and shoot, throw in some 90's bands as well) are just NOT that good live, and disappoint me. I can't spend high cash for mediocrity (though cheap cash is ok). Am I the only one that feels this way? Am I a jerk(rhetorical)?

@Jim Roseberry What I'm really saying is that the Turbo Frequency probably isn't needed for a DAW on a 14900k. I have an 11 gen intel, and I'm nowhere to hitting rim on a synth-laden project. Memory, percentage-wise, is a bigger hog than CPU. We all have different work flows; and lord knows I like to tinker and get max efficiency, but I don't feel like it is even needed these days. That said, I'd still tinker 🤫

I don't see the value in overclocking a decent current processor for a DAW at this point in time, I'd rather just add as much memory as can. YMMV

I have two from the late 80's/early 90's Depeche Mode: yes, they had been around for a few over a decade. But Violator reached a level of sophistication that hasn't been topped since in that genre IMO. Listening to that today, 35 years later, I feel the same way: In the late 80's, a friend had this before EPIC hit, and I was enthralled with the blend of different styles of synth/guitar/deep lyrics(read: not girls and blow)and the variety of Mike Patton's voices. The Real Thing is a MONSTER album, and dare I say, the best version of War Pigs:
