  1. For all practical purposes, it means it will play sounds that you own from Syntronik 1 and Syntronik 1 Deluxe, but they will not be editable in Syntronik 2. For that you need the full or MAX version which will upgrade the sounds (as opposed to merely hosting them).
  2. For some of us, the varied shades of grey/white/black on top of other varied shades of grey/white/black is a problem. Thanks for asking.
  3. This sounds a little bit like the melodic minor concept taught in some music theory classes. I know nothing about how soft synths can be used to switch tunings on the fly (through a key switching method, maybe?), but it sounds interesting. Maybe others here know. Thanks for clarifying.
  4. I have hardware sound modules that are similar. In addition to built-in tunings they can use midi commands to sent/receive user defined tunings (parameters for 128 midi notes from 0 to 127). The Scala program can be used to create tuning files so users don't have to program each note from the front panel manually. Also, I have seen a number of soft synths that use Scala files which allow users to use all sorts of scales, not limited to 12 tones in an octave. I am not familiar with the note patterns [I call then scales] you need, but we are talking about the same thing. (a) I haven't looked at the link Colin posted in a while, but as best as I recall, that is a good start. I think Scala also has a list. (b) I don't know the answer, but I am curious as to what "Custom Pitch Awareness" means for you. For example, in Scale View I know we can place notes on staffs with different clefs and some markings (e.g., sharp, natural, flat) but beyond that I haven't seen any way to notate note/frequency variations. Not 100% what this means to you.* In terms of MIDI and custom tunings/pitches/scales, from what I have seen, Cakewalk uses MIDI note numbers (0 to 127). So if you have hardware or software that redefines pitches/frequencies (for example, a tuning map for base note, +/- coarse tuning, and +/- fine tuning), you can think of Cakewalk as being totally unaware. It doesn't care what pitches you want for MIDI notes 0 -127. It is up to your synth to play the pitch you have defined. Hope this helps. PS: (1) As I go pull out my soft synths, I will look to see if they support Scala files. (2) What Scala files do you use for the kind of music you do? *ADDENDUM: I see in a later post one of your interests is in the Cakewalk Scale Manager. Thanks for the clarification (and the pdf). BTW: Based on the link Colin posted, I saw some Full Bucket synths I did not have. (I have a good opinion of the ones I do have.) Not sure if you want vintage synths, but the FB3300 has 3 "Blocks" each of which has 11 knobs to tune the named pitches. There are built-in tunings as well as a mechanism to load and save *.scl files. No mechanism that I can see for switching scales based on factors such as whether a melodic line is ascending or descending. Thanks for raising the question!!
  5. Thanks. I will take another look at Kushview's Element when I have time to fiddle with it. It looks very handy, including potential for diagnosing software that uses audio. To be clear, once I figured out how to set up my Windows 10 settings several years ago, I have had no trouble using ASIO with my external interface for some things (as mentioned above) and Windows Audio with the mobo audio for other things at the same time. So (to take one example) for any standalone soft synths (among other software--including web browsers) I can set them up to use (A) ASIO Out (FW --> Interface) OR (B) Windows Audio (headphone out --> audio in to the Interface. It affords me tons of flexibility. Thanks for mentioning FlexASIO. I remember looking at that a while ago. Maybe its worth another round of exploration. I didn't debug the issue(s) with Kushview Element yet. Too much to do; too little time. All I know is with my current PC settings, when Element started running, it killed the audio coming from WinAmp [Windows Audio] and Browser-based audio [also Windows Audio] no longer worked. I suspect I will have to read the manual and reconfigure things (possibly just the default Element session). Fortunately, when I exited Element, both WinAmp audio and Browser-based audio worked as usual. That's cause for optimism--I should be able to run Kushview Element and have audio the way I want without it permanently interfering with my usual work flow when not using Element. I just don't want to read a manual at the moment. But without question, starting the default Element's session caused my usual audio to not work and exiting it gave control over my usual audio back. My days of reverse engineering software have long been over. So to me it looked like a takeover. But it wasn't a full-scale incursion. ?
  6. A serious thanks for the link. Worth testing first because vPlayer3 triggered a BSOD. Probably my fault. With vPlayer3 open I changed the buffer size with my interface's utility and vPlayer3 didn't like that. Other software lets me open the control panel, change the buffer size, and do a reset to get the software to update the settings. Didn't see that option from within vPlayer3, though. I can see if the older version of Kushview's Element can handle settings changes without causing the dreaded BSOD. $2.99 might not seem like much but it covers several rolls of single-ply, non-scented toilet paper--much more useful than software that causes BSODs. ? UPDATE: YIKES!!!!! ? Good thing I tested the earlier version. Kushview Element seems to be incompatible with my current PC audio settings. I use Windows audio through my mobo for things like Winamp, YouTube, Vimeo, playing around with pro-audio software, etc. but I use ASIO and my external audio/midi interface for Cakewalk and more serious stuff with pro-audio software. It makes sense that upon initialization Kushview Element wants to takes control of all my audio since that is what it seems to be designed to do. So, I will have to see if I can use it without requiring me to change my current PC's settings.
  7. I love the description under "I thought this was free software." https://kushview.net/element/download/form/ Has anyone here downloaded and compiled the source code (Free as in Open Source)? If so, any tips for compiling it for use under Win 10 (other than, "paying $2.99 will take less time")? Never mind; I just looked at Element at Github.
  8. It is unclear what you mean by "write some midi stuff." There are many different workflows that constitute writing midi stuff. Perhaps if you enumerate the steps you took that caused unwanted splits, other well-seasoned users can make suggestions that might work better for you. I could be wrong but your original posts seems to be saying, "I'm frustrated with Cakewalk so I'm coming into the community forum and asking Cakewalk users for their 'honest opinion about it compared to other DAWs . . . . ' when I really want to vent and verbally bash Cakewalk." Just a thought, if you want to try to get suggestions for the unwanted splitting midi clips issue, its not too late to try a less combative approach. I have seen users go from having "Well, if you are coming here to trade insults, we'll oblige you" mind set to helpfully offering serious suggestions.
  9. I agree with the reasons people have stated for having a specific "Replace Audio FX" option. Previously I decided to remove a particular manufacturer's set of plug-ins for several different reasons. For example, the manufacturer has an environment that installs a huge number of plug-ins. Ones that are not licensed crash in CbB on my system. After trying to find a solution/work around, I decided it was better (more efficient time-wise) for me to just uninstall this manufacturer's software. Existing projects with their versions of audio FX (e.g., tape echo) all need to have the FX replaced. As other have stated, for me its not about retaining settings.
  10. Maybe it should be left open long enough (5 days, maybe?) for the appearance of an apology as in the response to a previous misguided expression of frustration?
  11. That's consistent with my reading of the X2 / X3 manual I found on line at KORG (assuming the global channel is set to midi channel 1 [hex/value 0]). F0 42 3g 35 4E 0n 00 F7 where 0n is as follows: 00 = combination 01 = edit combination 02 = program 03 = edit program 04 = sequencer 05 = edit sequencer 06 = global 07 = disk
  12. *Vague use of a pronoun. Is "you" a reference to the person who last posted to the thread? Another Cakewalk user who responded previously? Everyone who responded previously? A collective "you" referring to everyone? **"By now" seems to indicate a negative attitude or feeling, perhaps frustration, anger, annoyance, etc. Why pick up on a relatively old thread that was in fact answered early on? Just so you can vent your negativity? ***Could you be more specific? Which users? Or are you projecting the your own frustration or anger or whatever it is? *****Learning anything requires mental effort. Some things require more effort than others. "WITHOUT having to jump through hoops" seems clearly designed to attack and annoy whoever "you" is. Since I participated in this thread, YOU might even be including me in your verbal attack. I resent that!!!!!!! ADDENDUM: By any chance are you referring to this post which was made early on in the thread, in fact on the first page of the thread (3 pages ago), soon to be two years old?

    "Main outs?"

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think you are saying that because the hardware output buses might be hidden in some default configurations/templates/workspaces, unless users specifically unhide them, those users wouldn't even consider them as part of the signal flow. Not being pedantic, just trying to identify a possible source of misunderstanding when someone reads "main output" [or a similar phrase]. For as long as I can remember I have always enabled the visibility of my hardware outputs in the Console, but I can imagine that many users don't (or don't know to make them visible). Thank you for this point!!! My current audio/midi interface has several outputs, but I only use one L/R pair. However, I have been thinking of a setup where I use some of the others. For my own convenience, I have given the hardware bus for the pair the friendly name "Main Output." I will rethink that if and when I make use of the others. Personally, I think in light of the potential confusion brought out by the original post both John's and David's points are important for understanding how to best use Cakewalk.
  14. What *.ins [Cakewalk Instrument Definition file] do you have assigned to Channel 10 on that port? ADDENDUM (Some links to online help): http://www.cakewalk.com/Documentation?product=Cakewalk&language=3&help=Instrument_Defs.12.html http://www.cakewalk.com/Documentation?product=Cakewalk&language=3&help=Instrument_Defs.01.html http://www.cakewalk.com/Documentation?product=Cakewalk&language=3&help=Instrument_Defs.02.html
  15. If I have the right manual, it is a simple 8-byte sysex command. I could be wrong, but unlike other sysex implementations I have used, the sysex format doesn't require a checksum or an all broadcast/no checksum needed value.
  16. If I have the right manual (see PM), take a look at Section 2-6 - System Exclusive Messages > Function Code List > Function 4E > MODE CHANGE. It seems to be receivable in all modes (G C P A) but not when the Sequencer is playing, recording, or on the Data Filer page. PS: The sysex command is shown 2 pages later. (22) MODE CHANGE (R, T) . Looks like an 8-byte command. Best of all--no checksum needed!!! ? See numbered pages 208 and 210 [pdf pages 214 and 216]. See also NOTE 11 (numbered page 212, pdf page 218) which lists the values for the MODE CHANGE sysex command).
  17. Excellent modus operandi to avoid potential confusion and to maintain workflow consistency. Except for a few tests, I use that advice. However, for tonight's test I made sure to put in some Workspace comments in the description as a reminder that the new tweak is an exception--"Shift+F changed to New | File" and "Keyboard Shortcuts Saved." Without that I'd probably forget and have some WTF moments.
  18. I don't use too many short-cut keys/key combos (just a number of the basic global defaults) and almost never use custom key bindings. But I might someday. I do remember testing key bindings when I was exploring how Workspaces function and how I >>might<< take advantage of them. I seem to recall that custom key bindings do get stored (and then restored) if that option is selected under Workspace Management. So, I am wondering (1) if my recollection is accurate wrt custom key bindings and Workspaces, (2) if a special Workspace could be used to safely store a dated backup of key bindings, and (3) if possible, are there any drawbacks to doing that? Thanks for any insights into this. NEW: By the way, I just tested assigning Global Shift+F from the default (resize and spread out tracks). I bound it it to File | New. After I rebooted Cakewalk, the new assignment held. Then I unbound that assignment and it successfully reverted to the default (without having to reboot Cakewalk. ) Not sure this helps, but as long as I tested it, I thought I'd mention it. WAIT A SEC: Then testing the Shift+F Re-assignment and saving that in a Workspace, Cakewalk reverted to the default Shift+F behavior, not the reassignment which had just worked. I will double check after dinner. UPDATE: I suspect in the previous reassignment test (immediately above) I did something wrong or out of proper sequence. So I redid the Workspace I used and the reassignment has worked consistently. This does not rule out the possibility that there is an inconsistent issue with reassignments. Just wanted to add that in the last round of reassignment tests, I flipped back and forth between some of my custom Workspaces and some of the factory Workspaces. That confirmed that if a Workspace previously saved key bindings (and therefore restores them), if you use Workspaces, that might account for why a custom binding might disappear. NOTE: I did not do any tests to see what affect the "Apply Workspace on Project Load" option has.
  19. One of my successful replacement tests was to a TTS-1 (in addition to a few others). Update: I Inserted Loom, then replaced it with Xpand!2, and then TTS-1. Worked for me.
  20. Thanks for the update. So far I tested a few simple things several different times successfully: Track Pane Right click > Replace Synth. Menu > Insert Soft Synth.
  21. They play this song quite frequently in one of the east coast chain supermarkets I go to. In a sense the supermarket is an alternate reality that celebrates a wonderful pastime--eating food! And I only go shopping when other customers don't bark and bite. Hmmmm. Maybe they play the song so customers get the subconscious message to be peaceful? In any case, this is a very enjoyable cover! Thanks for sharing.
  22. Band on the Run - nahhhhh ? BONUS Interview:
  23. Thanks for mentioning this. Even though I am familiar with P.F. Sloan's contribution to early rock and roll, I also googled the song since the music of The Grass Roots was a part of my adolescence. I was surprised to learn (1) the song was originally an Italian song done by a group of British musicians who made it big in Italy who later did an English cover of the Grass Roots cover, (2) the "Shaa-laa-la-la-la-la . . . " line was a cover of an even older Drifters tune, I Count the Tears (penned by the legendary Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman) [covered by Rosanne Cash] , and (3) in the 1980s there was even a a disco cover of the original Italian version by The Rokes (among other covers). Warning: Some people might find the "Naa-naa-na-na-na-na late at night . . . ." / "Shaa-laa-la-la-la-la-la Piangi Con Me . . . ." / "Live for Today" line a bit of an ear worm.
