I've now read most of those threads and have as a result at least deactivated the setting "Always Use Latest Version of NI Plug-ins" in Komplete Kontrol. But, of course, NI must make sure that you at least get a clear warning in Native Access when an update would make an instrument unusable with the Kontakt version it was once designed for. A short mention of such a requirement change, accessible from some miniscule "Read More..." link, is simply not enough.

I had this problem in July. When trying to open a project containing NI Session Guitarist Sunburst Deluxe, Kontakt 6 first said that it couldn’t find the samples. After a short wtf moment, I pointed it to the correct sample folder and made a rescan. After that, when opening the instrument, Sunburst Deluxe was in Demo mode?! Unfortunately, in Demo mode, you can’t really see the interface and the settings you've tweaked. It’s more like a white blob.

After some discussions with NI Support, I realized that Sunburst Deluxe apparently had been "upgraded" so that Kontakt 7 was now required for that instrument. And, sure, I’ve got Kontakt 7 as well, but as I couldn't see the instrument GUI in my project when in Demo mode, I would have to start anew. I could hardly believe it. How could they turn an instrument that once required Kontakt 6 all of a sudden require Kontakt 7? It was just so effing stupid.

But I finally got a link from NI Support to the latest version of Sunburst Deluxe that worked with Kontakt 6. As I have K14U, I downloaded every instrument I found on that "upgrade" list, just in case. After downgrading Sunburst Deluxe, I managed to open my project again.

Finally, I wrote a note to myself: Never EVER update anything using Native Access; just use it for installing NEW software. Why? Because you won’t be warned when NI raise the Kontakt bar, and thus crash your existing DAW projects.

Sure. The steps 1–4 above will be the same. Then, in the Command window, for Sonar you write:

After hopefully getting a confirmation that everything went well, for CbB you write:

These are the steps I would recommend:

1. Make sure the latest versions of all your plug-in menu layouts are in your planned target folder.
2. Take a copy of your source plugin folders, as they will have to be deleted.
3. Delete your source Plug-in Menu Layouts folders.
4. Open a command window.
5. Having e.g. Sonar as source/slave and CbB as target/master; write:
   mklink /j "%APPDATA%\Cakewalk\Sonar\Plug-in Menu Layouts" "%APPDATA%\Cakewalk\Cakewalk Core\Plug-in Menu Layouts"
6. Of course, if you also would like to do the same for, say, SONAR Platinum, you’d run this command one more time with the first path changed to
   %APPDATA%\Cakewalk\SONAR Platinum\Plug-in Menu Layouts

The beauty of this solution is that you can then update your plug-in menu layouts from any of these Cakewalk applications, and the files in the master folder will be updated, and thus be immediately accessible to all your Cakewalk apps.

Even better, if you’re using multiple Cakewalk products, you might want to only keep one set of plugin menu layouts. As for me, I have one master folder and then I’ve created symbolic links from the other application locations. More specifically, I have CbB as my master at %APPDATA%\Cakewalk\Cakewalk Core\Plug-in Menu Layouts. I’ve then added symbolic links named “Plug-in Menu Layouts” from %APPDATA%\Cakewalk\Sonar\ and %APPDATA%\Cakewalk\SONAR Platinum\, targeting the same master folder. It works very well.

I think you’re pressing Shift in the wrong context. If you press Shift when opening the cwp file from File Explorer, you will get the "personalize user settings" message. However, if you press Shift when clicking Open inside CbB/Sonar’s File Open dialog, you will be asked which plugins, if any, you want to skip.

MIDI only deals with MIDI note numbers, so there is no set standard what C0 means in a MIDI context. Different developers have different preferences.

In Sonar you can adjust this setting in Edit > Preferences > Customization > Display | Base Octave for Pitches to your liking.

They used to be great many years ago. For instance, in 2016 I bought DS Audio Tantra at 60% off for $25, and all its expansions for an additional $15. In 2018 I bought Audiofier Abstrung, Vesper and Aerkord at 75% off for $12 each. Great products and great prices. But then something happened. The deals became more meh for each new sale, and I finally cancelled my newsletter subscription.

I’ve got M1 and WaveStation so the upgrade price for me is $199. Seems like it’s $50 off for each instrument you've purchased separately up to a maximum of $150. But I don’t know. There’s certainly no lack of synths from the eighties and nineties on my computers. Probably too much money for something I’d hardly ever use.

There are two ways to organize your plugins in CbB/Sonar.

The default layout is updated automatically when plugins are scanned by Cakewalk. There are actually three default layouts relating to instruments, divided by either Category, Manufacturer, or Type. They can be reached by pressing the Down arrow on the far right of the Plugins tab.

You can also create your own plugin menu layouts by using the Plugin Manager, and that’s what you have in your picture. My guess is that you’ve created more than one and the reason you can’t see your latest edits is because you have currently selected another one.

So, click the Down arrow on the tab and play around with the options on the menu. The ones below the second dividing line in the menu are your personal plugin menu layouts. You have similar layouts on the Audio Fx tab, containing effect related menus. Also, the default layouts can be edited by choosing Manage Layouts in the drop-down menu. If you presfer your own layouts, it can be a good idea to have (at least ) one for instruments and (at least ) one for effects. That's what I have.

I haven’t had that much time to check it out, but one of the things that mostly attracted me, based on the video by Cameron, better known as Venus Theory, was the Color module. Of course, as they come as four different plugins, you can always stack them in the FX bin, so there’s really no end to the possibilities. But I’ve found that the Mix knobs definitely are your friends in order not to overdo it.

And, if you manage to buy it for €29.50/$29.50, you end up with a price of €7.38/$7.38 each for really high-quality effects. It’s definitely in no-brainer territory if you want to be taken back to your old Technics, Pioneer, Yamaha, Nakamichi, or whatever your budget would allow at the time. Or, to simply add some character to just about anything.

I’m sure it’s based on some algorithm based on your recent purchases directly from UVI. As for me, I nowadays always buy UVI stuff directly from UVI, as that will increase my chances of getting loyalty vouchers at year’s end. Yes, it might be slightly more expensive than buying from a third-party vendor in the short run, but in the long run, maybe not.

I finally threw in the towel and bought that Tape Suite for €29.50. I was surprised to see that it’s actually four different plugins with almost identical GUIs, not one plugin with four different modes.

Softube’s ProChannel plugins have never been free, nor have they ever come as part of SONAR Platinum*). If you’ve bought them, they should be available in your Softube account. Also, as Softube’s plugins always are authorized through iLok, you should be able to see them in your iLok License Manager.

The only other legal option I can think of is that you may have had a time-limited demo version of these ProChannel plugins installed. If so, you should be able to find them in your iLok License Manager, marked as being of type Trial/Demo. But, of course, that time limit would have expired long ago.

*) Edit: Well, will the notable exception of Softube Saturation Knob, which has always been free.

F2 has worked that way in so many programs for a very long time, so I would say that’s the industry standard for entering edit mode. Microsoft Excel, for instance. Tab to any cell containing a value, press F2 and see what happens. Or, Windows File Manager; focus on a file name and press F2. Same thing.

I found a boxed version of HALion Sonic 2 at a local music store during BF2021 for around $30, which got updated to HALion Sonic 3 upon activation. And yesterday I upgraded from HALion Sonic 3 to HALion 7 for $75, so I've paid roughly $100 for the full version. It seems pretty powerful from what I’ve seen so far, so I can't complain.
