  1. If you run Surge in Cakewalk, you may find that the UI zoom feature is broken. and crops part of the interface when scaled. A workaround is to first open up a Komplete Kontrol plug-in instance in Cakewalk. Then open Surge as a plug-in within KK. The zoom feature works well then. Other DAWs except for FL don't seem to have this problem.
  2. Maybe digging around the Dell forums may give you some insight to that question. https://www.dell.com/community/Dell-Community/ct-p/English A search for the Inspiron 580 turned this up: https://www.dell.com/community/Desktops-General-Read-Only/RAM-DELL-Inspiron-580/m-p/4510935?advanced=false&collapse_discussion=true&filter=location&location=category:English&q=inspiron 580&search_type=thread
  3. I wonder if Waves requires a periodic online check-in from the offline computer? Probably a good question for the Waves support team. Did you have to install Waves Central on the offline computer to use the USB based license, or was just having the USB inserted enough to allow the plugins to run as authorized? Just curious, as I'm fairly new to Waves, and so far only use them on my main PC.
  4. I asked Waves tech support if it was safe to use the USB for other things once it contained my licences. This may or may not apply to your issue, so I am just providing this info in case it may help. Here was their response: "The USB can be used for other things and other files can be copied over to this USB device. Just do not move or copy the Waves folder that will be created on this USB drive upon license activation via Waves Central."
  5. Different issue with Oscar. He was referring to SampleTank 4. A lot of folks had that issue affecting more DAWs than just CbB after the initial release, including me. But that was fixed in the v4.0.4 update. The program needed some memory optimizations. Seems to be much more all around stable now. On the other hand, I have heard a few folks mention instability with SampleTank 3 around here, even going back to the Sonar Platinum days. A lot of finger pointing at the VST3 version in this thread: http://forum.cakewalk.com/Sampletank-3-crashing-Sonar-m3682989.aspx
  6. Hi, I also have both of those bundles. They are good deals for the money, if you can overlook the outdated interfaces and lack of current software development support. But that is why they are so cheap. There is really no comparison at all to SampleTank 4 in sound quality or functionality, IMHO.
  7. Yikes! In that case, it may be time for a new PC! In the OP Larry stated that it was a Dell i5, about 5-7 years old. So I was expecting something with a bit more modern hardware specs... I had no idea we were talking about a vintage machine. I wouldn't put any more money into that PC, besides maybe a new SSD that could be migrated to a new PC eventually. Here are the Dell Inspiron 580 manual and documents. The comprehensive specs pdf lists the Inspiron 580 with max memory configuration of 8GB, using a max 1066MHz or 1333MHz DDR3 DIMM, with a max module size of 1, 2, or 4GB only. https://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/product-support/product/inspiron-580/manuals
  8. No that's not what I was saying. I would avoid unmatched pairs, or unmatched pairs of pairs. Keeping it all the same was my point. So 4 sticks of 4 would match, in the form of 2 pairs of identical modules. That would be functionally equivalent to 2 sticks of 8. Same total, and dual channels with 8GB on each channel, for a system total of 16GB. You probably could run 2 sticks of 4, plus 2 sticks of 8, or some other combination. But since this is DAW performance we are talking about here, I wouldn't take the chance with mis-matched modules. DAWs push the hardware to the edge with real-time demands, so memory timing needs to be very stable. That's one reason for the recommendation to never overclock a DAW system. Overclocking can lead to memory timing issues. Here is a handy free utility that will show you how your memory is currently configured, and what type of modules are installed: https://www.hwinfo.com/download/
  9. As far as RAM goes, it is probably better to run with either 8GB or 16GB in pairs of equally matched memory modules, either 2x4GB, or 2x8GB. Use the same brand with the same timings, and hopefully the same manufacture date. These can usually be purchased as a matched pair. https://www.computerhope.com/jargon/d/dual-channel-memory.htm When you do it this way you are ensuring that your BIOS will take full advantage of the dual channel memory controller if you insert them into the correct slots on the board. Consult the manual. The slots are usually color coded. https://www.crucial.com/usa/en/what-is-dual-channel-memory For example, say your memory bus was rated at 1600MHz, that would be assuming you are running both channels at 800MHz. So 800MHz+800MHz=1600MHz using both memory channels combined. But this is only theoretical max throughput. I have seen several discussions that real-world benchmarks only see a minor improvement with dual channel memory. But I will take all I can get! It might be up to your BIOS whether it can support dual channel mode with unevenly matched pairs, such as 4GB+2GB or 8GB+4GB, etc. Or if you put two RAM sticks in the same channel. You might risk slowing down the memory by half. And if you mix and match different brands, with different timings, you may even risk the stability of your system. Just my two cents!
  10. I believe it is also up to the plug-in developer to set a flag in the plugin so that the host knows it is supposed to hide the VST2 when a VST3 version is also present. I have some newer plugins that work correctly like this, but some older ones that do not, even from the same vendor. I have witnessed this behavior across two different DAWs with the same plugins.
  11. There may be a few things I would critique about Waves, but their tech support would never be one of them! For the few times that I have had to contact them about issues, their response has always been top notch! But I think some of their technologies are stuck in the past, especially with the use of a network adapter MAC address to lock the copy protection to. As if everybody is still using just a dedicated, on-board, Ethernet interface on their systems for network access. I would think their developers just need to look a bit harder (just a little) to locate a less transient bit of system hardware to use. It's not like they are sending a network message home with the the network MAC address stamped on it to verify your license. My Waves license was locked to a virtual network loopback adapter used by another product that I had decided to remove. Then my Waves licenses were "poof" gone! I will add that I keep my on-board Ethernet adapter disabled in my motherboard BIOS, since I do not use it. So it appears that the Waves installer looks for the next best thing.
  12. It should, unless you are like me, and have already burned my "One Time" this year. Will now need to be extra careful until next year. I'm going to go for the USB flash approach.
  13. I'm going to assume that what you really want from a keyboard is control of your plug-in sounds, since you already have a Faderport for the DAW control surface. I have a keyboard similar to the Akai Advance 49 (Alesis VX49), which comes with Akai VIP 3.1 plugin, and has the same VIP integrated LCD and controls on the keyboard. In theory, you can use it with any plug-in, but unless you are willing to do some mapping manually, you will only get that for the provided factory maps. The best alternative to that might be a Native Instruments Komplete Kontrol keyboard. The Komplete Kontrol plugin will automatically configure any NKS ready plugin for the keyboard. The limiting factor here is that this will only auto configure NKS ready plugins. But that is apparently already a long and growing list, and is much more than just the NI Kontakt and Komplete plug-ins. Here is the list of 3rd party NKS ready products: https://www.native-instruments.com/en/specials/komplete/this-is-nks/nks-products/ I have the free Komplete Kontrol plug-in, but not the keyboard. That works with my Alesis keyboard's 8 knobs after I MIDI map the MIDI CC from the knobs to KK, and it will auto configure the controls for any of the few NKS ready plug-ins that I do have. I think that the NI plug-in system is probably a bit more plug and play, and user friendly for simple keyboard operation. I have also heard that their keyboards in the Komplete Kontrol S-series are highly recommended. If you can, check them both out in a store!

  15. I think Waves realizes that they are still holding onto old concepts. And plugins that used to sell for hundreds of $$$. Why else would they be selling off their crown jewels for $29 a pop?
  16. I lost my Waves licenses when I removed a network adapter from my computer. I had to use the Waves allotted, once a year license "recovery", which proceeded to activate the licenses again, evidently using another available network adapter. When I disabled that new adapter, my Waves licenses were no longer available. When I re-enabled that adapter, all was well again. So I contacted Waves support and the only thing they could suggest was to move the licenses to a USB flash drive, which is another option. "The easiest way to move your Waves licenses between multiple computers is to activate them on a USB flash drive. Once that's done, you will be able to run your Waves plugins on any computer to which the USB flash drive is connected." https://www.waves.com/support/move-licenses Sort of like an iLok, but not iLok...
  17. Emulations of the Yamaha SY77, Korg M1, Ensoniq VFX, and Roland D50. For free. A no brainer! Last day!
  18. One advantage with the Rapture Session browser, is that you can use it to browse and search for keywords in the preset banks of Rapture classic, as well as Dimension Pro. I find it's much easier to use this method to find a sound, rather than using the native preset browsers in either of those two legacy synths. The legacy banks should show up as "user imported" in the Rapture Session banks list. Of course, you can still open the legacy synth to edit a sound in there if you wish. But browsing or searching presets to audition or just play them is much improved in the new UI.
  19. OK, well that clears that up. MIDI tracks that are just sending data out through a MIDI port are not CPU intensive. Same for playing audio tracks without plugins. Your current PC should be able to run fine with that load. So something else must be conflicting. While a new computer is always welcome, I'm not sure that expense should be necessary to solve your problem. I would keep digging, as there is no guarantee that this issue would not follow you to a new computer.
  20. Are you using imported GM MIDI files, or are you creating your MIDI tracks from scratch?

  22. Well you do get 3 activations per license per UVI, so I would say that you are well covered now!
  23. It's not bad! Definitely worth grabbing! Picked it up for free with a hardware bundle last year, along with a Korg M-1 LE.
  24. When I search Rapture Session for "glass", the search hits I get are from my Dimension Pro, Rapture "classic", and Cakewalk Sound Center. I don't see any matches from the Rapture Session Factory Library.
