I heard the developer doesn't believe in sales and apparently he doesn't allow any codes to be used on his products by a reseller either.

I can understand the devs position. Uncle E should have realized that the more popular items wouldn't allow the code!! Wonder who is taking the hit? Uncle E or the company the plugin belongs to? Because if the company is still getting the same amount of money from JRR, what does it matter to them what he sells it for? It's sold!! They make their money

I do trust PC World, however, and have been a subscriber for years,

    I trust them also.

wouldn't even think about buying a discounted license from Amazon or Ebay, or most other unknown sites, though

Nope, not even. Friends have asked me about that and I always tell them I don't do it, and I advise not to.

I would rather spend a little extra from a more reputable dealer and be sure about it.

    Exactly.

Should I just keep using win 10 Home until my next build or attempt an update?

Unless you really need it Tim, if it were me, I'd hold off. I built my new machine about 4 - 5 months ago and there are STILL quite a few programs that I have yet to install. Band In A Box is the biggest. It takes a while!! Remember back in the day with XP you could do a full clean re-install in an afternoon, and be working on projects by night time!!

Maybe I'll use Acronis and make an image of my setup. The image alone is probably over a terabyte but seems like a much better solution.

Just make a backup image of you system drive. (That can't be a Terabye, is it?!!!) Then upgrade, see how it goes, and ya got a bkup if things don't work out. Some programs may give ya a hick up and you will have to re-authorize (looking at you IK!), others you may need to un-authorize then re-authorize. But I would think it should be fine just upgrading the OS. Not really changing any hardware. But if that won't work, I'd wait.

I am hoping this new build takes me over the next 7 - 8 yrs like that last one did (thanks Jim!!)

in my case, it's just a persistent habit born out of the misguided effort to find in the outside the fulfillment that can only come from facing the existencial void that a life separated from the universal nucleus that bonds everybody and everything together brings about, but that's just me folks

    That's deep!!! : )

Surprise. 40 bucks ain't a bargain anymore. Just in case it helps anyone else. Do an open search before buying this one

I typed in " How much is Win 10 Pro" and I got a few hits on a lower price. Yep. But from sites I never heard about, and I probably wouldn't buy anything from them.

    Digital Portal - $19.99

    SoftwareMax- $59

    G2A.com - $30.38

Best Buy (with Curbside Pickup!) - $199

    Buymicrosoftwindows.com - $99.50

    Kinguin.com - $32.35

Sweetwater - $139 (Best price I found from a known dealer)

I have read PC World off and on for many years. Since I started computing back in '97. That's why I even considered this deal. Because if it's below $99, be sceptical. Start looking around the site before you buy.

  6. Great news Bob. Thanks for the update.

I knew it was all good. PC World has been around a long time. I have never thought of them as rip-offs.

And believe me, I doubted the price at first. $39 for a real, full version of Win10....Pro? MS would never allow that!!

    But....

recent backups is IT 101.   JRRShop struggles with these basic functions.  With so many other resellers, I think I will choose to not use JRRShop in the fugure.

This is also my concern. Because of the struggles, a hacker will figure out how to capitalize on this situation eventually. Hope not. But the threat is real.

Glad they're ok, this has to be super-stressful. I only had a couple interactions with Eric but he seemed sincere and hard-working. They were generally my first stop for software.

Data from sometime in 2018 through the crash is still incomplete. I have some download links missing from that time but can wait.

Yeah I am glad they are ok and coming back up. He does seem like a good person just trying to run a business. And JRR is one of the shops I go to more.

Yeah, I got some stuff last year and this year and it's still not showing up. Problem is, I can't remember what it is!! I would have to go back through my Paypal account to see what I bought from there.

[edit] I did change my Password, just to stay on the safe side. And I am looking at getting the new IK Space Echo and maybe adding some TH-U sounds along with that to maximize my "savings!"  LOL!!

  9. These are all great ideas. I have two bkups. Both lic # are tucked away in their own folders in Onedrive and Google Drive. And both locations now have these Generic codes info!! Just in case!

I am of the opinion that PC world would not be selling Win10 license so openly for such a long time. These are good numbers I really believe. And for little over $43 for Win10 PRO?!!!  No brainer.

may have talked a bunch of folks into purchasing these licenses.  :)

Yeah I think ya did that!! LOL : )

    I know I am one!! : )

I haven't gone back through the whole thread, but I think others have confirmed that these are indeed a good valid MS license. I think it's call Authenticated, is the MS speak for this!

a Win 8  OEM that I upgraded with a MS Deal to Win 10 pro. Not sure if that made it a retail one?

If it's a OEM license, then the free upgrade to Win10 will be tied to that OEM machine still.

I know this - as an IT guy, I've seen enough red flags for me to avoid JRRShop now.

This is exactly what I am thinking too.

The password manager is a great idea but how does work if I sometimes use either my three computers or my phone to make purchases?

I use LastPass for quite a few years now. They keep the software updated and add new features fairly often. It is also has an Android app that seamlessly lets me use it on my S10. It stays sync'd across all my PC's and cell phone. It also has a family feature that allows a family to use the same software with different profiles and passwords. I really like it.
