Not sure if I explained myself properly in the OP. Actually, I'm fairly sure I didn't, given the replies. I'll have another go... In music (if not midi), there are sometimes timed silences between the last note (or 'event' if you're speaking 'midi') and the next one. These are usually called 'rests', when written on a stave. I would like to apply some of these timed silences in the PRV for music I am copying from a stave. I have no idea how to do it. Thanks for any advice.

I haven't had that 'experience' and I didn't mention it in my post, but thanks for the extra advice.

I've started to add notes directly in the Piano Roll View, rather than play them in, for some tunes such as Christmas Carols. This immediately brought up 2 issues: 1. Should I leave a gap (e.g. 1/16th 'square') after one note ends and before the next one starts? I started doing this, and I can't hear a 'gap' in the melody between notes. 2. If (1) is correct, then how do I write a whole rest, for example? Perhaps leave 4 blank squares between the previous and next note? This seems a lot, though. Advice on how to write in notes and also write rests in the PRV is very welcome, and thank you in advance.

Thanks for help. I had a look at the 'sources' and everything was checked (see below). Actually, they are all midi tracks. I've done nothing different to the top 4, so why they should export OK is a puzzle.

Hello all and thanks in advice for any solutions to this annoying issue. Exporting a time selection of all tracks, has been hit-and-miss at best, for a while. Today it's impossible. Only the top 4 tracks are exporting - even though all 6 seem to be selected. The bottom 2 (both BBC-SO) just won't export with the others. The top 4 tracks are routed to a bus for separate 'leveling'. Could this be the issue - and if so, how do I fix it? Your advice is welcome and thank you for it.

Windows 11. 32GB Ram. I'm experimenting with composing to video. I've got the video imported and playing - but ONLY in the multi-dock window, and very enlarged (I can't see all of the movie). I've watched a YT video that says a smaller window will open if I double click on the thumbnails, but it's not working for me. Advice on how to reduce the view of the video to 'fit' the screen (or open a 2nd window) is welcome. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Very help thank you @mettelus. I'll try out your suggestions.

Is there a simple and easy way to make very jerky MIDI notes (due to my bad playing) sound smoother (more legato) in Cakewalk? I've tried many times to do it when inputting the notes on my keyboard, but it still sounds like it's being played by a very bad computer. UPDATE: I've adjusted some notes in PRV, to make them fit the bars a bit better and it's not awful now, but still very robotic. Thanks for any ideas.

And learn some new abbreviations and jargon, while I'm at it.

Thanks for the feedback. So, does this apply if I'm not recording external instruments - only using VST's played with controllers (keyboard and wind). I did look for a midi interface with external drivers, and was advised (in another forum) that they are redundant since the advent of USB midi.

I've had Some weird technical stuff going on with CbB recently. I have a Windows 11 PC, with 32GB RAM, i5 processor and NVIDIA HD Audio sound card. 1. Cakewalk regularly will not re-open once closed, no matter how long I leave it closed, and I have to go into Task Manger to END TASK (I've seen other mentions of this online). 2. Since then, after I export audio, I can't hear any sound when I play the tracks again, until I close it down and re-open (using the method in 1). 3. I also then get pops and clicks when I use the mouse, even when closing it down. Thoughts are welcome. Thanks for any help.

All Instruments Playing with One Track Selected!
Stephen Power replied to Stephen Power's question in Q&A
OK, I did that. I've now started on Freud's 24 Volume 'The Interpretation of Dreams', to help me understand why I'm having nightmares about Cakewalk. -
New user. Can't record virtual instruments
Stephen Power replied to Neville John Pearson's question in Q&A
I think my suggestion does both...Where's the harm in just saying...here's a possible solution, but the manual may well have others? -
Excellent help, thank you @Lord Tim. I'll give option 2 a go tomorrow and report back.

New user. Can't record virtual instruments
Stephen Power replied to Neville John Pearson's question in Q&A
Having taught (at a very high level) in universities for 30 years, I certainly understand the concept of 'prerequisite knowledge' (having to understand basic principles, before you can move on to understand more advanced concepts), and I totally value the provision of a reading library or database, in whatever form. But, I would never have told a student 'go and read the text book' (even one I had written myself), before I would help when they were stuck with a specific issue. I have to say that I often feel disheartened when I see this in forums, especially ones labelled 'Q&A'. There seems to be an assumption that the questioner has not read the manual, or perhaps is too stupid to see the answer in it, when they do. Where's the harm in just saying...here's a possible solution, but the manual may well have others? -
I have a 15 bar MIDI clip which is just a simple chord sequence, voice by a 'choir' plugin. I'd like to extend the last chord with a lot of delay, but not extend the note length. I also don't want the FX on the rest of the clip, or at least, not as much. I tried splitting the clip in the middle of the last chord, and turning on Sonitus Delay, that I had added to the track (see below). But all I get is a jump where the split is, and not the nice spacey ending I need. Can anyone advise me on on how to achieve that please? Thanks for any suggestions.

All Instruments Playing with One Track Selected!
Stephen Power replied to Stephen Power's question in Q&A
Thanks for your reply @msmcleod I had a look... 1. "Enable MIDI Output" is greyed out when I opened both of the synths that played along with the Surge synth and can't be unchecked. 2. "All inputs" is set for all tracks. I can't find an "All External Inputs" option in the drop down. I thought this odd, as I have definitely seen it for other tracks in other projects. -
I would appreciate some assistance with this beginner's problem, please. I'm new to CbB but have been using it for a few weeks without this happening, so I'm quite puzzled. I added a new track and dragged across a midi plugin (Surge XT) to it. Normally, I could just play that instrument on it's own, without muting the others. But, today, the 2 other tracks (which were playing separately previously) are playing along with the Surge instrument. All the track levels are showing at the same db, although none are showing in the photo - even though I had it playing wen it I made the screenshot. Any advice on what caused it and how to fix it, is welcome. Thanks. UPDATE: I've seen my mistake! Input Echo was turned on on all tracks. Bear with me, I've only been using Cakewalk for 2 weeks!

My grandmother has a Ph.D in computer science and is Professor Emeritus at Salisbury University. So, she would probably explain it better to me.

Thank you @Andres Medina and @msmcleod It took me a while but I eventually found 'replace synth'. I need to brush up on my RTFM and right-click skills.
-
So far, I've only replaced an instrument used on a track for one from the same plugin (Spitfire LABS for example). I'm trying to replace an instrument with one from a different plugin than the original one. But, if I do 'insert instrument', on the instrument icon, it opens up a new track - and I'm trying to use the existing track, because the notes are on it. Advice is welcome on how to do this, please.

That's very helpful - thank you very much.

I've watched a few of your videos, John, already. I've watched several by 'Creative Sauce', the 'Audio Sorcerer', and others. I've bought Bill Edstrom's book. Please do not assume that I have not done any of my own research before asking a question. I am already finding your comments on my posts patronizing and based on the assumption that anyone asking a question is either (a) a non-musician or (b) so lazy that they can't be bothered finding stuff out for themselves. In my case, neither is true. If whoever set up this forum didn't want us to ask questions, with a Q&A sections, it seems odd that they've put a Q&A section in it. If you are rude to me again, I'll report you to admin and then block you.

I watched twice, yesterday and today. He doesn't mention my issue.

The simplest answers are often the best, aren't they? I did try that but for some reason didn't see it happening. It is now. Thanks.
