Someone gave it one star.  It sounds good to me.  I find for electronic genres the quality of a piano sound is not as important as the system footprint.  No one really needs to load up their 20GB piano for such things.  Plus these are uncompressed so compress them in Kontakt to make it smaller.

Yeah,I was expecting it to sound like one star and was surprised. A little EQ work and a nice reverb and I could see this one really shining.I agree that for electronic genre the requirements would probably be a lot less.  Just a narrow mid rangy kind of thing might be fine.

Traditionally the cheapest way to get the full version of Kontakt was to get one of the handful of free Kontakt player libraries and use that as the crossgrade.  The trick of course is sometimes NI changes the rules on which of the free Kontakt libraries qualify (if any of them)

In the past I know users have used Sennheiser's DrumMic'A, which can be gotten for free (in the past you had to get through the German language website for registering but that looks like it's changed).  https://en-us.sennheiser.com/drummica

Recently ProjectSAM released a free Kontakt player library, The Free Orchestra.  I'd try that if I were starting from scratch https://projectsam.com/libraries/the-free-orchestra/

There are a few other free Kontakt player libraries (if neither of those two qualify).  There are also a bunch of low priced Kontakt player libraries that will certainly work, though most of those seem to be stuck in the $99 price range.  There are exceptions though, Soundiron has a handful of $39 Kontakt player libraries for example.  https://soundiron.com/collections/kontakt-player-edition-collection  If you are going to go that route it's best if you find a cheap library you'd actually use/want.  But I'd try the free ones first.   You might also want wait for the next sale to buy the crossgrade, NI usually has a summer sale of some sort.

Thanks Matt for these links. I'll check it out.. Yes, If he could find a library he would use that makes the most sense. A free library would be icing on the cake.

I found an NI list for qualifying 3rd party libraries.  HERE

  2. One of the founders of Spitfire has an upload site called Pianobook that has over 200 free libraries in it.

    Check it out  HERE

You will need to register with pianobook. For kicks I downloaded the Steinway by Jon Meyer. Around 500mb zipped . He used some nice mics to make the captures. For a free piano I think it's really nice. Would sit well in a mix. Even captures some pedal noises. This was just one library of over 200....so I haven't scraped the surface yet.

Apparently the Kontakt full version is required. Looks like NI have a nice crossgrade path  up to K6 from the player version IF you have one of their libraries.  I have a bud looking to get K6. Can anyone point me to a very reasonable library he could use to upgrade?

I made a short vid of that piano so you could hear it.

  3. Thanks for sharing Wookie. I get a feeling of great expanse in the beginning. Great sci fi material. The arpeggios further in give this some nice movement against the backdrop of  well placed sounds.

I liked it - a good inspirational song - I enjoyed following the lyrics to your song in the video.

I thought your vocal was a bit too upfront in the mix - but maybe it's better that way.

I would have liked to hear the acoustic guitar more in the mix.

Regarding the second song - I enjoyed the lyrics.  The piano was very nice.

Regarding the third song - same comments - I enjoyed the lyrics.

Good job on all three videos.

Thanks Douglas for theses helpful mixing comments. Thanks for listening!

Great song and performances Tim - I really like your voice! I agree with Doug that the vocal is a little too loud in the mix

Daryl, Thanks for coming round to comment and listen.

    Tim,
    1st track
I hardly ever listen to Christian music but the ones I've heard have some catchy melodies and this one certainly does.
Couldn't help thinking that a soul on fire kinda means you went to that other place.  ?

    2nd track
You mentioned you're going for a combination of contemporary music with hymns. This seems a little too far in the hymns range IMO.

    3rd track
    Voc is too up front.
Instruments might be a bit heavy on the reverb, but have to say reverb can pump up the emotion when listening to the lyrics.

Your excellent voc delivery comes out as being sincere in what you say.

LOL. Yeah, I sort of thought those lyrics could be taken in different ways. It's a tough genre to pick for in having so many varied age groups.  This music should have meaning for the listeners. Much of the new Christian stuff doesn't always nail meanings down or one lyric can mean different things to different people.

Thanks for listening and for your comments.

This is what I'm using too. Two twenty something inch monitors. Neel is sitting much closer than I am to mine though since I have two keyboards sitting into a custom made desk in the front of it.Mine are at head height which helps but they are a little farther away.

Screw the labels.  Create what you like and let others call it whatever they will!

This approach works! it has successfully gotten me no where in the last 20 years! I didn't want to go anywhere, so I'm happy.

The toilet paper thing is a bit of a joke...until you actually run out. We are down to our last roll now and the only 3 supermarkets close enough to us have none. They've had adverts on the TV saying we have warehouses packed with it, but getting it out to the supermarkets is the problem. I've asked twice when it is coming in and they say "next couple of days". but it hasn't arrived. I also have a half box of tissues for backup. After that, we will have to walk into the shower with our pants down and clean ourselves in there.

This reminded me of a take on the old theme song from the western Branded..........Mr. Poop needs vocal lessons though.

  8. Since our church isn't meeting locally and since I am tasked with the music for it I have been looking at "remote worship" solutions. Last week I simply posted myself in the studio playing tunes. This week I made a series of three videos with words and backgrounds. I am new to video production. In hindsight that last background almost reminds me of a 70's disco dance floor.

I was under a small time line to get these composed and set up. The first song uses some parts from a track that I added strings to it and piano/vocals. The second track is all made from scratch as is the third. The last track stretches my vocal ranges a bit in the chorus. The 1st two are much easier to sing. In hindsight I should have dropped the key. I could do it but just barely and it borders of falsetto.

I hear little things in the mix in places I don't like. That always seems to be the case with anything I make though. We mix contemporary up with hymns so I shoot for a combination of older and more recent material. Any video/audio/composition recommendations are welcome.

I thought about doing " When The Roll Is Called Up Yonder" but I was afraid people would be after me looking for toilet paper :)

  9. Love the album cover. Nice mix you made here. Something one could dance to. I don't often mix loops so I don't feel qualified to comment on the way they are mixed. Sounded like a  very good mix for the genre to my ears.

    Thanks for sharing!

How are they doing this? I had assumed that online jam software over large physical distances was inherently impractical due to the unavoidable network latency.

I was going to ask the same thing. I believe when they "cheated" they simply made videos and played along taping themselves.

...and they really need a fiddler in there.

  11. This isn't the kind of thing I generally post here but the Corona virus sort of changed my musical directions for a bit. I am responsible for the music at a local church which can't meet due to the virus so last week I made a small set of tunes and posted them online for the church.

I must do the same this week, so I got a little more ambitious and decided to make mixes of tunes and post them with videos of the words. I haven't made any video yet and this is only the first tune I mixed. I hope to post this along with video on YouTube soon. The basic tune isn't original but the composition behind it is all original. The feel of the tune has been changed slightly because of this.

If you get the chance to listen to both links and comment on if one has higher fidelity I would appreciate it. Doesn't need to be the whole tune on the 2nd link. Thinking about maybe using Orfium more since they claim a higher fidelity upload over SC 128mp3.

  12. I think it pays to know where the ideas come from to better understand the music. Thanks for sharing this. Highlights for me were the nice synth bass and counter point going on in the background!

  13. There really is nothing every wrong with any of your stuff Bat :) The reason I can't find anything to say except..it is not only one of the best examples of mixing but also one of the best examples of guitar playing.

You should still be in a band traveling around playing. This is too good to be only heard in people's living rooms or cars .

  14. Nice work on this! I'm sure it represents a lot of hard work over those 2.5 years. I didn't have the time to listen to the entire album. I did listen to sections and a few songs. These types of compositions take a lot more time than say, a simple pop mock up...so hats off to you for such a large effort.

I believe you are a gifted composer. The music takes interesting turns in composition. I hope to have more time to listen to more of your material later. I hope you will continue to share your music.

  15. This is a great collaboration between you two guys. I would say the mix sounded "glued" together well.  The amount of glue is up to the engineer. I think this has just the right amount in my opinion. Things gel in the lower mids a little but I think it adds to the glue effect and feel of the tune. Amazing how the mix can influence the material in such an artistic way!

The repetitive motifs added to the old pop/rock feel and reminds me of similar tunes from that era. The vocals are great!

Thanks for sharing and I hope you two get to do it again.

  16. I appreciated the balance between the horn and guitar. I like Jazz, so this is right up my alley. Nice clean mix.  The mix on my end is coming across very nicely.  You didn't limit it too much. I don't notice anything harsh here...I think the mix fits the music style very well.

    Thanks for sharing!
