It would be nice if they made this for some people. A reset button would be helpful too. Did i just say that? -

Thanks for the FYI. I have always had a much tougher time selling than buying. I hate to sell stuff. I loathe the process. TBH I have never sold or transferred any software or plugins..After I sort through my stuff and figure out what I'm duplicated on I don't mind giving the seconds away to someone who would use it and not try to re sell it. I didn't plan to try to unload anything in the near future. I'll just chalk it up to lessons learned. Hopefully this might help someone else.

Same here Kenny on the way I react to music. Things have changed some over time, with the music I mean ? well ok some other things have changed too, no not that. I still have mojo. I live in harmony with my moobies. I'm like a two legged camel. Beato? I guess I don't have an opinion about him one way or the other. I've listened to a few of his videos. I am not stuck to him as a follower. He seems to get plenty of followers.

In Your Face BASS - What's your strategy?
Tim Smith replied to musikman1's topic in Production Techniques
Many good suggestions here so far. I can relate to hearing a mix I really want to copy. Not sure what genre you are recording? My approach differs some with genre. I'm a keys player who plays some guitar and bass on the side among other things. I am often trying to make my sampled basses sound as good as a real bass player. Using MODO bass or similar I can usually get very close. I'll try to cap off a few points that generally have worked well for me. I'll assume you are making something similar to electronic music because you mentioned synth basses over real basses. Decent balanced mixing space Alternately monitor or headphone correction lower volumes when mixing I hear you saying you want the bass to be pronounced, to cut through the mix, so I would ask, what gives bass 'cut' or emphasis? What causes what mixing engineers call 'mud' in a mix? Doesn't necessarily need to be all in the bass since mud can come from almost anything. All good bass is just well mixed mud because if you take the mids and lows away all that's left is mid rangy tone. Mixing is more about perception than what actually seems to be right. What seems to be right often isn't. Many people think since the bass sounds powerful in a good mix it should be boosted way up. This is not true. WE can't hear transients below a certain frequency, and since transients are where we hear the bass attack this detail should get attention in any bass unless we don't desire to hear the attack. I will generally use Fabfilter ProQ 3 and engage monitoring with headphones on at a frequency point. Then I will slide that point around at a medium Q to hear the sweet spot, the plink, the attack call it what you will. If I can't readily hear it I will raise the db some maybe a few db. You don't want to hear bass at this point. All you want is the attack. One you have this narrowed you can EQ it based on the surrounding mix. Since mixes don't stay the same through any song these variables may change depending on the material. You might be fortunate and get a fairly consistent mix using one setting. If not, then either multi band compression or EQ can be used to make space between other tracks that might be working against you. Generally we want the emphasis to be forward at least enough to identify the bass. With maybe the exception of Hip Hop I would roll off bass below 60hz. I will often use a steeper roll off. Most DAWs default to a 12bd roll off. I might put my roll off to 24 db. I will do this on non bass tracks too if needed. A lot of this is going to be individual taste, so what I like you might not like. Another thing that blurs crisp attacks is small micro attacks not hitting on the beat. If I have a rhythm guitar playing a few milliseconds before the main beat or a drum kit not lining up on the beat exactly it can contribute to the feeling that things are out of kilter. We can use track alignment technology or sample level alignment. Check there are no phase reversals or comb filtering. I try to keep in mind that in mixing everything is cumulative, reverb can build up mud, so I roll the bass off the reverb and almost NEVER put any bass in a reverb. Reverb is often the enemy of clarity in a mix. Reverb can be set to either work with or detract from a mix. Sometimes a small adjustment on the diffusion or delay can clean a blurry mix up. I'm getting a little long winded here so I'll stop for now -

The Little Things That Make Us Temporarily Happy

Not in disagreement here. Tech can be hacked and there is some risk involved with all of it. Having the latest version of Android helps. Shutting down "snooper apps" or apps that open us up to vulnerabilities helps. I only do my banking on the phone at home under a protected wifi router. My phone requires both a 4 digit pass code and finger print recognition to let anyone into it. In addition my banking app is pass word protected, so we are going to need a crook with inside knowledge. IOW from somewhere besides my phone or he won't get in. It isn't impossible though. I hear ya there. I have dreams of owning a flying car, but then everyone else would have a flying car too which sort of defeats the purpose. -

My 'sense of right' always gets to me when a person who has been waiting in line is passed up by a person who jumps ahead. In my thinking everyone should be waited on in the order they came in. This routinely does not happen. You are right. One lane takes the stress out of it. With my banking app I no longer need to worry about it- One thing I like. The banking app. No lines.? -

This might interest you. I know you're a tech guy and a musician. I have an app for my bank in my phone. When I get a check. I take a pic of it and send it to the bank using only my phone. The check feature is a part of the app. If the pic is out of focus, the app won't accept it until the pic is taken right. Phones with decent cameras fare better. I have a close up feature on my phone that works well for check deposits. Because if you're anything like me and there are two lanes at the bank. I am ALWAYS in the slow lane. Obviously it doesn't work for cash. Cash? What's that? -
For 100 feet, the 14 gauge cord works for 11-13 Amps, while the 12 gauge cord is best suited for 14-15 amps. If your cord is 150 feet long, the 14 gauge is best suited for 1-7 Amps, whereas the 12 gauge will support 8-10 Amps. This shows that the extension cord's length also plays a part in the power it helps safely.

Maybe a better deal could have been possible I agree. Probable in fact. To those looking at these bargains- Places like Musicians Friend do not specify which generation of Max you need to update at the 99.00 price point. I had to dig to find that out.. If you buy the wrong version you might be required to pay the difference before they unlock it for you. Version 2 to 3.5 was the reason for my price. If I had version 3 upgrading to 3.5 I could have had it for the 99 dollars. My price was 199 with jam points or 158.00. Normal retail on 3.5 is 399.00 aside from the MAX promotions. I forget what I paid for version 2 . To get a better feel for value I would need to add that price to what I just paid. I'm thinking it was something like 199.00 on sale. 199 + 158= 357.00. This is how I see myself cumulatively getting to version 3.5 over time. If we go to version 4 at 99.00, I will have 456.00 cumulative investment to get to version 4. If at some point version 4 goes on sale for 399.00 I'm behind the ball if you look at it like that. Thanks for the suggestion to sell additional licenses. If I factored in all of those extra side buys, this is where things get interesting. I am WAY behind the ball. I paid separately for ARC3, B3X organ, TRacks 5, Sampletank 4, Sunset sound reverb, Lurssen mastering console and three or four other items that I am not remembering right now. I participated in several group buys and picked up all kinds of plugins. If I factor in all of that I'm into this total for over a grand. Could have easily been cut by at least 30%. TBH I was unaware there WAS a MAX when I bought a bunch of this stuff. On the plus side, I didn't have Mixbox or MODO drum. I didn't have the new keyboards, rhodes etc. I was missing several TRacks modules. I will gain a bunch of Amplitube modules. My older MODO bass will be updated to 1.5. All in all if I had stayed with MAX updates ONLY I would have fared better. My guess is maybe the Group buys are mostly for those persons who don't see themselves ever getting MAX. Patience is where this can pay off. IK seems to update MAX AFTER they release newer versions of some of their products, and I don't blame IK or Peter because not everyone is going to want MAX. Some only buy single programs like Amplitube. All in all, I'm still happy. We don't only pay for new additions, we pay for improvements in the software itself . I think IK is a decent company who aside from a few minor wrinkles gets things right. And I'm writing entirely too much about this

Good to know. I honestly haven't used the plugin lately because of all the trouble I had.

Exported audio sounds different on different speakers?
Tim Smith replied to Ron Pipes's topic in Production Techniques
You are much further along than I am. I still have several projects in front of my dream mixing room. At the rate I'm going I might not be able to use by the time I get to it. -
Thanks! I bought this for the stand and pop filter, but who knows? The mic might be ok too.

They no longer call CbB Sonar? I recently enrolled in Groove 3 for training. I looked up Cakewalk there. All they have are SONAR videos!! Lots of places still call the software Sonar. In other news- Did you know Audent just released a killer interface? The EVO 16. It comes in at the sub 499.00 price point and has lots of I/O.

Me too. But I doubt either of us will.

Not sure if it was the best call but I moved from 2 MAX to 3.5 MAX. My best price was 153.00. For any one considering MAX 3.5 ...look at what's included in the MAX package before you buy software separately. Of course, it's better if you already have an older version of Total Studio MAX or can get a license transfer from someone else. Check out VERSIONS Because I bought some items separately besides having MAX 2. I will have double licenses on them. ARC 3, B3X, TRacks, Sunset sound reverb among others. HOWEVER I picked up other products that would have cost more than my upgrade price. All of the electric pianos, MIXBOX , all of the tape plugins and a bunch of other stuff. In 3.5 you get Syntronik 2 but will miss those 11 synths in Syntronik 2 MAX. Meaning if you want them all don't ignore the GB unless you want to wait for 4.0. You get MODO drums and MODO Bass 1.5. I had an older version of MODO bass. I can wait for 2.0 among the other things they will likely add to the future version of Total Studio MAX 4. If future pricing is anything like present pricing going from 3.5 to 4 would be in the 99.00 range and hopefully include those things cclarry mentioned. .......Oh and you need 490 gb on a fast drive. Not sure how this would work on a 5400 rpm. 'Might' be ok if the drive was dedicated only to MAX. Not sure.

I don't know what this is. Should I have admitted that? Look like a very large unsanitary life saver.

I think we are wired to be better at some things than other things. If we are wired to do something we will want to do it. If we are wired to do it, it has a purpose. If it has a purpose it was intended for the greater good. Flowers are blind, this doesn't diminish their beauty to others.
