From what I can find out , it is the writing to SSD that more diminishes life span than reading SSD. Yes there will always occasionally be a dud regardless. Most computer musicians I would guess are reading large libraries from SSD with very little writing to them. Maybe this is why I have never had a failure. I have stayed with Samsung drives because I believe they are better made and so far I have not been disappointed.

Thanks for the heads up on all of this. I hope I can get to it before the 18th as I will certainly buy it. I now have room for more libraries, but I am trying to be careful about what I download because if I don't use it, it's wasted space. I had to ask myself if this was something I would truly use. I had a lot of fun playing with the free version and was impressed with the sound design team at Arturia. For 29.00 it's worth the gamble to me. If I want "different" strings this would be my go to. Haven't looked much at pigments, but you guys have my interest in it up so I'm going to check it out. I still haven't bought SERUM which has been out for 10 years or more. For me it's an odd arrangement musically. I have a great interest in synths and synthesized music in general from a technical stand point. In actual use, I hardly use the stuff because my sound has traditionally been more acoustic. You can make my music with a few guitars, a bodhran drum , maybe a bouzouki and some underlying synth for interest. I could have saved myself a lot of trouble if I had just kept it simple...but nooooooooo. I found the deals forum and it was like Christmas day. I LOVE pretty much all of it, even if I'll never use it.

Does having long hair make you a better musician?
Tim Smith replied to Tezza's topic in The Coffee House
Ha, I guess the premise for this has to be humor right? As a man thinks, so he is. "If" a man thinks having long hair helps him it's a useful placebo. I once thought having long hair was "the way" to look. I think somehow a poodle dog got into the genetic pool thousands of years ago, so my hair is often curly and ornery. Maybe some of it grew from the 60's counter culture rebellion against societal norms, because this is when long hair as a "thing" took hold. If you were in a rock band then you were supposed to have long hair. I see it as more of a marketing schtick. An association to the people who you wanted to buy your records. They looked at them and said, "they are one of us". This may or may not have been true. This association carried over into the 70's, largely went away in the 80's except for metal bands mostly. Never went completely away, but did die off for awhile in a big way as a thing all bands did. Cutting the locks hasn't seem to affected Metallica's image and sales, but metal heads would say they aren't really a metal head's band. Since gen z really doesn't have much of a musical foundation due to all the computer junk, some of them have gone retro in a big way. Marketing has changed and corporations now have agendas more than ever. Back in the day a band's message and look wasn't as important as album sales. Now bands are groomed by corporations for agendas. What big brother thought was popular is what was popular as long as I can remember. If they want something to be popular they promote it through all channels and John Q public adopts it. Tattoos, body piercings and just generally out there looks are in for bands. I don't mean one tattoo, I mean covered in them. I find it ironic women in bands often have short hair, so I see see the whole thing as a counter culture statement by groups of unhappy, upset and confused individuals. If the world is around long enough in it's preset way, the day will probably come when no tats and piercings are in because, after all, grandpa will have them. -
Did you make more music when you retired?

The same is true of Viet Nam and India. Not sure how many other countries are similar. As long as US currency can stay ahead. Recently I watched a video where a man was living well in India on 21.00 a day. I can't answer for how well they respect elders. I have heard stories of elder care homes here neglecting their residents. There are the ok ones, the great ones and then the bad ones. -
I though the same. Talk about click bait...geese ?

I'm guessing probably one of the biggest questions DAW users asks themselves with computer upgrades and builds is , "How much GPU do I as a DAW user need"? At least this is a question I ask myself every time I build a computer. I'm not spending 1K on a graphics card when all I'm mostly doing is audio. There is the occasional movie I make though. It sounds lime you went whole hog on a nice GPU card. Better too much than not enough. I wonder if they are water cooling those now? MY guess is someone has done it.

Did you make more music when you retired?

I plan to stay in my home as long as I can. I can hire out people to help out if necessary. I am in Pennsylvania and I like the seasons and weather here. If retired in the winter I just won't go out. I'm not really the type of person who thrives on social connections. As long as I have a few friends around I think I'll be ok. A big retirement community would be wasted on me. Not knocking it if that is something others have interest in. I'm still probably a few years out unless my health demands it sooner. Right now I'm looking at ways to cut expenses pre retirement. I'm dropping 300.00 a month on Comcast triple play I signed on with a long time ago. My son works for them and he was telling me they aren't very flexible on negotiations to cut that amount. "Triple play" is a home phone, the channels and internet. I looked at T-mobile because they have a box now and only 50.00 a month. All I really want is the internet. Unfortunately I am out of range for them. I can't get Verizon's fiber here since I'm so far out. I checked out Elon's Skylink and it looks as if it is still too early to jump into that. He doesn't have enough satellites up there to cover my area very well. Sure, I could buy the dish and wait. I discovered a local WISP but they told me it looked like there were trees blocking the signal. I took a pic to the right of my house and it looks like I can see the tower. -
I am probably similar in some ways on the DAW recording and goals. I sit out back with a cup of tea in the evening after work, chores, and home projects wondering if I'll have the interest or energy to go into the studio. At that point I've been up since 5am or before and it's 8-9:30. and I'm supposed to put in time on the violin every day unless I want to throw good lesson money away. This old man is beginning to wear thin by then. One part of me thinks the studio sounds like a great idea. The other part thinks it might be more fun to go lay down somewhere and catch a movie or read. Both of those end up being pre sleep. I haven't been in my studio in at least three days. On the computer end I just added a new drive and enlarged my C. Moved a bunch of my sample libraries around to more logical places. With 6 SSDs that computer is faster now than it has ever been. I spent the good part of a Saturday afternoon setting it all up last week. I have most of my stuff backed up using Macrium to an outboard drive. My computer is getting kind of dusty inside but I'm afraid to try and clean it because the last time I did that on another computer it had a failure. I might try using the Dyson with a brush all power off to computer. Mostly all my dogs do is sometimes poop in the wrong places and for awhile there they liked my studio. I would walk in there and feel something hard under my foot. Thank goodness the turd had dried.

Thanks guys. I'll give these a listen. Those one hour commutes get pretty long sometimes.

Small update- I did some more investigation into this and from what I hear the SATA chip might not be as tied to cpu lanes as I thought, although the more you add, the less throughput you have. Explanations seem to go in two directions so far as advantage to multiple drives .vs a larger drive. A few use some kind of an outboard SATA rack.

No I'm not starting another one. At least not yet. I mean the stuff for listening pleasure while driving. Any favorites? There were a few audio mixing podcasts I listened to for awhile. You really have to sift through them because some of them sound like adolescents who figured out how to make a podcast and like to hear themselves talk. Talk show hosts that shouldn't really be talk show hosts. A lot like the music now. You can put anything out there. I don't tend to listen to any one thing all the time. For awhile there I listened to German podcasts to learn German since a few of my buds know the language I wanted to hang with them. We have Amish around here and the German they speak is NOT the German they teach. It's really a tough language for me to pick up. Then I was into a few of those paranormal podcasts. I might catch one on the way home tonight on my car android setup. I am wearing thin on a lot of that. Much of it isn't worth the time it took to find it. The only one I really occasionally catch now is Jim Harrold. Some of that can be ok if I fast forward through the commercials and Jim's sales pitches. I sometimes catch Ben Shapiro. He's a guy one side loves to hate and the other side loves. He talks fast. Very fast. I have liked some of the true crime podcasts but over time they can be depressing and dark. Mr. Ballen is one of those. He is a good story teller. The stories are supposedly all true and some of it is almost unbelievable. I can take him occasionally in small quantities. I listen sometimes to John MacArthur. He's a straight shooter IMO but religious so that might not be appealing to many here. To have a good podcast you need a good speaker and an interesting subject. Lots of these podcasts are profit driven and exist to make money. Others are clearly an interest of the podcaster. Larger companies are now getting involved because there is money in it if you do it right. When I had my audio recording podcast I had offers from marketing companies trying to get me to interview their clients. It's really odd to see some of the people trying to "make it" in the music biz. One guy was all tinsel and no substance. He had literally paid his way into everything with zero talent. I can still pull up the old podcasts but I took stopped paying the server so the links are all dead. I had a few of them somewhere on my hard drives.I could have accepted their clients for a fee but that wasn't really my schtick. I wanted to pick my own guests. I have considered maybe getting back into it again if things were done right. I just didn't have the time to stay with it and it's a little like owning a restaurant. It might be a fun thing to do, but imagine making food 7 days a week and can't get any help. The fun goes away fast. On YouTube CreativeSauce has built his numbers up pretty well and he makes a great informative show. I have some admiration for what goes into maintaining a YouTube channel like that on a regular basis and keeping the programming current. Anyways...I am reminiscing some. Really I just wanted to know if you found any podcasts you especially like and tune in to? I'm not really into debase stuff or devil worship so none of that has any appeal for me. You can probably find almost anything if you look, but to cover a subject well you need someone who knows that subject well and can put the info out there in an interesting way.

My motherboard has plugs for 10 SATA III drives, and while it can get confusing sometimes unless everything is organized as to what is where I have tended towards smaller drives for cost considerations. All of my drives are SSD so the cost goes up with capacity. Presently it is somewhere around 100.00 for a TB. I suppose if one uses HDDs instead, cost isn't nearly as high. A 7200 rpm drive is just fine in many cases. Cons- Noise, wear and more of a hit on the power supply. Awhile back I was able to get 500gb SSD drives very reasonably so I ended up with 4 of those. Then I bought 2 1TB SSDs. I just cloned my C drive from a 500 to a 1tb drive because it was filling up. 4 or 5 DAWS tons of plugins and a few synths have their files on my C, I'm sure you get the picture. I will probably use the 500gb as an additional sample drive after I wipe it. I am making backups on a 5TB outboard drive and I keep a few more separate backup drives, one from NI with Komplete on it and one I keep as a spare with my Sampletank sounds since you have to pay to replace those if they ever get lost. I only use those for storage. As you might be able to tell, I have leaned more towards multiple drives instead of one or two larger drives. I'm sure someone like Jim could get better into the pros and cons (if there are any) from a technical perspective in using all the available SATA connections on a motherboard vs. only using one or two with a larger drive. While cpu lanes are probably a factor, I can see maybe the possibility of a bottle neck if you were running all of your samples off of one large drive instead of pulling them from multiple sources. Each drive has a set data capacity, and cpu/motherboard setup determines the speed you can pull lots of samples. I can only use 28 lanes as opposed to some motherboards and cpus that have 40 lanes. You might not notice any of this with a smaller project and only using a few libraries. I had thought about adding a few 7200rpm drives for those 'emergency' purchases over on the deals forum I have had a very good record with using SSDs though, as in never a failure on over 5 years with constant use.

If you come in from the south I don't think you need anything. In fact they seem to be helping people across. I would say you are probably pretty Americanized by now. I'm sure many Canadian traits stick for life.

Love the pets ! I might be afraid the lizard would try to eat me while I'm asleep ? Here's a few pics of my dogs. I tend to let them go a long time between haircuts. There's a before and after hair shot since they went in for cuts recently.

And I would like to try one of those you have over there as well.

The sounds they managed to supposedly get out of that are almost too good to believe. I would be slightly skeptical as well. If it's a contest, yeah I would be after the program files to be sure. I am not familiar with this synth, but is does seem a stretch unless there are a load of outboard samples in it.

This reminds me of the Arturia's collection of symphonic sounds. Many of these sounds are very convincing. If this is an included plugin inside of FL all the better. It seems there are little gems in some of these DAWs,. I updated Mixcraft last night and had forgotten there are some nice little plugins and instruments in it. I'm on the fence with sample libraries. I have enough of them now to make decent music, so why look at more of them? It seems like an endless money pit. Everyone comes out with another library the following year . NI just came out with something else. They all do. I admit to a fixation with them, but I can't possibly use all of them or learn all of them in my lifetime. I like having plugins set up by type rather than brand. That way I can better look though the massive pile I have and make a decision. There are a lot of them I seldom ever use.

You're a better man than me. I would need to be permanently stationed at a urinal with 17 pints. Those piggy things sound like pork rinds I love those. They have red beet eggs over here in my area. You might like those. Lightly pickled with a touch of sweet. Eggs soaked in hot vinegar and red beets with a touch of sugar.

I'm happy for you. I hope it all works out for you. One of my co workers who retired did a similar thing and went to Florida. It seems to have worked well for him. -
I realized I don't care much for Guinness. Plenty do though. The only dark beer I ever liked was one that had chocolate malt in it. I could drink that one. Just thinking about beer makes me want to pee.

Quite impressive to be at one place that long. I have stayed in similar line of work since 1989. Only in the last few years did I get into a less physically demanding and more computer centric part of that work. It's kinda tough working on a computer all day, then coming home to another computer for music. Last night I did just that though. I'm squeezing the last bit of use out of my existing DAW while planning a future build. Still working toward the space I planned to use for mixing. It's in the pipeline. Maybe being retired will give me the time to get it done faster. I have the space already, it just needs to be completed. For me 'retired' would not be idle. I plan to be doing other things. -
I don't know what it is but I hope you enjoyed it. For such a horrible product they do well in sales. Probably one of the very largest breweries in the world. TBH for me as an unsophisticated very occasional drinker Miller or Bud lite is usually my beer. Next higher on the list of sophisticated beers for me would be a nice German pilsner. As you might guess Blue Moon falls in there too as a more mainline brew here with some of those characteristics. My standards are probably pretty low. Most would give Miller a slight advantage in taste over Bud. We stopped along the way to get filtered water. I use those 5 gallon jugs. The water dispenser is part of a beer distributor, so I went in to get some just in case. There must be 500 different brands in there from all over the world and I walked out with.....Miller Lite.

For me it's on the radar and only future health outcomes will dictate the timing. Hopefully when I get out I'll still have some quality time. For me lately I've had all of this 'stuff' to try and complete before that time comes and the 'stuff' is smothering my music time. I haven't fit very well into the slots I've tried to put myself into musically in public, so this demands a rethink. When a person gets to be that age I hate to say it, but it might not matter as much either way save for mental health. Right now I continue to work but my heart isn't in it at all. I might look for something I like to do. Not that what I'm doing is necessarily bad. It isn't.It's just that I've done it for 20 years.
