  1. Thanks for the update on these cpu's Jim. These chips cost about what some of my entire first builds costed or more. I remember building a computer for 500.00. Gone are those days. Much like Erik, I tended to get a generation behind because of the price point and my needs which are generally less than a fully blown working studio. I am tempted to go big the next time though even though it is uncharacteristic of me because I don't want to bother with it again for a long time.
  2. I sat down long enough to play a rough bones -piano track for maybe an orchestra mix. I was going to post it and then thought better of it. I don't like posting half baked stuff among musicians.
  3. @AndyB01 We seem to be similar in that we aren't expressly drummers unless sitting behind a kit playing around counts for something. I have played bass. I fact I'm probably playing bass tomorrow. Drums, bass and often rhythm guitar are what hold the beat or bottom end of most songs. Most musicians have a sense of rhythm. My issue is usually with having too many choices in both drums and loops. Let me know if you ever get that simplified because I have a tough time with it. Would be like a pianist who can pick the sound of each key almost. It's crazy what we can do with drum software. Me being a classic overthinker I often get bogged down. One thing that has helped me is to listen to tracks I respect and listen to the drums in them. If you do this is becomes apparent in most songs, the drummer could almost read a book while he or she is drumming. Very simple rhythms using very simple samples, often very dry in a mix. I almost need to approach it like I'm decluttering things most of the time. What I have, or what anyone has even with something like EZDrummer is severe overkill. In a word-Simplify. Then if I need something more I'll add it later. If I have an 8 bar verse I might put a sample drum under it with a feel I like fully expecting to modify the midi later. I put enough rhythm under the song to make a complete song. Then I go back and make changes. Often I won't use a canned loop. I might use some of one and make modifications to it later to make it feel like a real drummer felt a sudden urge to hit a snare for emphasis. Even though I'm not a drummer i try to imagine I am when putting together drums. Even though most drum parts are fairly simple, I have found that with later modifications they can sometimes take enormous amounts of time to make the way I want them to be. Might be 20% or more of my time into one song.
  4. What are you doing. watching the ball game in there? ? I built a gazebo these last few weeks all the way from the concrete footers to erecting it. I had help with putting it up. I still have to run electric out to it and make a patio under it for the hot tub. Edited to say these last few Saturdays. I could have built a lot more if I had two whole weeks.
  5. This goes both ways my man. I have seen gays attack straights simply because they disagreed with that lifestyle. If anything this group is now being pandered to. Did I open a can of worms? Prolly.
  6. Cranial flatulance......you mind if I borrow that some time?
  7. Yep. I'm not sure why he even bothered to bring it up. If you see a man dressed in a donkey costume in the studio we should just whistle and pretend it's something we see every day. If there wasn't some friction it would never have been brought up. I think friction is good sometimes because there is always a reason behind it. My comments were not about what he didn't do. It all depends. Not a given.Depends on the studio and the clientele'. I personally would treat a man with colored fingernails like anyone else. The donkey costume might be pushing my limits.? Maybe you can't accept that he lost my respect. That's ok too. It wasn't the fingernails, it was the scene which you clearly didn't think was a scene. You are entitled to your opinion. I am entitled to mine. If he was attempting to get more views by making a controversy that would be probably embraced by his listener base, kudos. It was a good move assuming he really knows his listener base, one of which was me.
  8. I've never seen them before.
  9. Thanks for posting this. I think this is fantastic. My first thoughts on it might not have been the most positive. Not really negative either, just what work around would need to be worked around. - Server , like any other server online protection would need to be beefed up in case someone tries to come at you. An open server could be an open door. - I believe Shoutcast charges. Haven't looked at the rates. Everyone has to make it somehow right? - In the case of sharing I'm sure the copyright bug is just around the corner ready to bite, unless the material is clean. I could see one computer being pressed into service as a radio server and let loose. Most podcasts are prerecorded. Someone has to collect though because now we have computer upkeep, show programming/recording and the Shoutcast fee. A sponsor would be necessary unless the fees are very reasonable and you only want to stream to yourself. I'm thinking the same or much less than Spotify.
  10. I have no idea. I guess we can start another where is Larry thread?
  11. Jim might be using these to guitars, however ribbons are excellent for recording violins too. I second his advice on Royer even though it's a bit of $$. I tried a Golden Age Ribbon MK-2 .I was not impressed. It sits in my studio unused in the case.
  12. I would love to see integration into Android Auto. Maybe as a program that's dual purpose streaming cloud and computer based. I haven't seen anything about a server though. Thanks for the links!
  13. Whoops. Wrong area. Needs moved to Deals.
  14. I can see your point here, however to eliminate an opinion because we don't agree with it is to destroy free speech. Free speech is a big thing in the US, maybe not as much in other countries. On YouTube ( or anywhere else) people can be very rude and crass. This was my point . If you're in the public eye, then it's an expectation that a certain number of people are going to make comments (free speech) and those comments might be totally wrong or against what you believe. You can't stop the comments unless the social media channel is against it. YouTube has been known to shut down opinions they don't agree with. This all sounds very right and well to many people until it happens to be their opinion that is removed next time. Labels fly around left and right and we are at a point where those who see themselves as in charge of society feel they need to shut some people down. No harm in voicing his opinion, however I personally think it shows a bad grasp of reality for what reality is. Society is busy building protective bubbles for people. Not really the job of social engineers IMHO. When these people realize they are in a protective, and dare I say, artificial bubble, they might not know how to respond. The truth is , not everyone agrees with what someone does. Maybe disagree is too strong in some cases. They just don't like something and they say so. Most will be cordial about that disagreement or say nothing at all and have good personal reasons for it. Others will not be so kind. One position comes from a place of love and respect for all human beings. The other comes from a place of hate. Both may disagree on the same issue and handle it in entirely different ways. But to say, "Hey why you upset?" is to potentially open a whole can of worms. Do you really want to know the background for why? Be prepared for some intense stuff sometimes.
  15. I would love to see a move back to players instead streaming services. Winamp will likely be trying to merge the two. Just a guess on my part.
  16. I would agree with that certainly and the other comments you made before it. I guess there are more levels to the spectrum. Not everyone will see that the same way. I believe most in this crowd and probably most any other crowd of serious DAW users will not see it the same. I always wanted to be both a better musician AND a better sound engineer, yet I have met plenty who had almost zero interest in the technical end. That's a spectrum too- The dedicated musicians and those with pipe dreams who can't play a chord. I have never attempted to really promote myself because it made music unfun for me. You will notice I don't care if my site is linked here or not. Some of it is ok and some of it I should have probably deleted a long time ago. The profits from online music are so dismal it isn't worth my effort to put anything out. I share stuff sometimes. Back maybe 5 years ago Soundcloud was a real community and musicians on it were actively sharing others tracks and taking the time to comment, then there was some kind of a shift there in ownership or something and whatever happened seems to have killed most of it. TBH I felt like a ***** liking some of the material there because I honestly didn't like it, but sometimes felt the need to comment on someone who had commented on my material. I eventually realized I just didn't have the time to listen to thousands of tracks and make objective comments or shares, so I sorta dropped out of that. I also understood it went both ways, with maybe some of my listeners gagging when they listened to my tracks.I just stopped most of it because after all, I didn't go there to listen to others tracks, I went there to post my tracks. I know that might sound self centered. I like a lot of it, but I just can't keep that ball rolling. There are people at home all day and THIS IS ALL THEY DO...listen to tracks and comment in return for the same (hopefully). Many of these people actually have pretty crappy music, but they made a lot of "friends" on SC. I understood the vain nature of the title at the very beginning after the first few posts. I felt like maybe Larry put it up more as something fun to read and talk about....and we all might remember the past time the owner of a guitar company decided to make some "changes" with Cakewalk. *ahem*. That was an interesting ride for those who had invested in the Cakewalk program paying anywhere from 299-499.00 for it. So maybe some can see a little apprehension in the title for those who are now vested in Studio One. It doesn't really bother me much either way. I'll bet you a hamburger this is mostly smoke, but if some of it isn't, then I would be so very surprised if anything EVER happens to the flagship core program. It would be a kind of corporate suicide. Entry level can be any number of things. I mean, I can buy plastic screwdrivers and fake power saws. Yes I am being slightly sarcastic here to make my point. An entry level product can either make a company look better or worse. I see the bandlab app as an entry level product that seems to work ok for many. It has a decent amount of functionality, but I would NEVER expect it to replace Cakewalk and probably one reason why Cakewalk was acquired. What makes me wonder -why should the CEO even mention this at all unless it's hype, or maybe a way to gauge interest ahead of time? And when was the last time is was news when a 'lite' version comes out? " Yep here's the new Ford, minus air conditioning and the passenger seat." So,,,,,it's smoke, either that of he was smoking something.
  17. But I guess I'm making a big deal out of him making a big deal out of it because it didn't have to be a big deal. Everyone is entitled to their opinions. If we loose that people we are all in very big trouble.
  18. Yeah I have that guy on my feed. Can't say I watch him regularly. He had one episode where he was upset because someone made fun of his colored fingernails. That one kind of turned me off that he cared enough to make it such a big deal. If a person is going to decide to have a look that's different than most, then don't cry if someone on YouTube comments about it, maybe in a negative way. That actually should be an expectation IMHO.
  19. If I bought an entry level product and knew there were other capabilities in a higher level product I could take advantage of if I moved up, I would be moving up. Others don't seem to think that way. They are content to lay sound down, use basic plugins and DAW software. Some might eventually 'work into' a more feature rich program as they see the need for it. I have always seen a potential need and acted based on that, and yes a lot of it is probably overkill for me. After a lot of failed experiments I don't think touch pad anything is going to be the answer, so i pads, and i phones or android equivalents are just little gizmos that make working in a DAW more difficult most of the time. As an ADDITION they seem ok for some things, but not as a program centric thing. I tried a bunch of that stuff early on and didn't connect with it. Sure if I were living in a mini house and didn't have a computer and the ONLY thing I had was a smart phone I guess I would have no choice. Other than that though, there's no beating workflow properly set up on a desktop DAW. No matter what you use, EQ , compression and mixing chops will never change. At some point you might be given a menu based on genre. "Ballpark" smart plugins. This is why I think music is stooping to even lower levels in quality.
