About Me

  1. I didn't know those were so cheap! The only time I've heard them was at the Sony booth at NAMM, c. 2008. They sounded wonderful. At the time they were a new product, and when I asked the rep what they retailed for, he said $500. I set them back on the rack and moved on.
  2. WOW. I can't remember the last time I used The Bandlab App. As a non-online DAW user I forgot how to use Bandlab Studio, but I see that some DAW-based test tunes I did and tested the Publish to Bandlab feature with are there along with some tests from 2019-2021.
  3. So-called “modern miracle” features a new modelled tonewheel engine and a new Leslie speaker emulation https://www.musicradar.com/news/hammond-xk4-b3-organ Hammond is calling the XK4 “a modern miracle” and, while that might be overstating it a bit, it does appear to be a keyboard that gigging B3 aficionados will want to take a close look at, particularly as it weighs just 20 pounds. Now we just need to find out how much it’s going to cost. https://youtu.be/KNKEV_3q7p8

    The Show

Here's another one from the reject pile. I wrote this and did the balance of the recording in 2019 but for some reason I so loathed this song that I put it from my mind and promptly forgot about. I ran across it this week and thought, gee, that doesn't suck too terribly bad. I know it's a bit rough around the edges but I don't think it deserves the derision I mentally heaped upon it. Anyway, here it is, The Show. Update: My apologies for reviving this, but I had neglected to post the updates based on feedback. I've adjusted the mix to tame the snare and actually ended up changing the drum set. I've also brought back some guitar bits that I had inadvertently left out of the last mix. Thank you all for listening and critiquing, it's been a fun learning experience. the show kevin walsh 10/23/2019 they always come at night just before the closing invoking certain rights with the guns that they are holding same old show same old show just waiting for that minute when you have let your guard down and you find that they have left a candle for your take down same old show yeah they know and they always seem to know which way to go and they always know just how to make it so woah woah humiliation burns you while they carry out their shakedown and you're choking on the bits of the situation breakdown well you know yeah you know they're sifting through the bones while you hide among the ashes and they hum their little songs and the flames race up the sashes so it goes yeah so it goes and they always seem to know which way to go and they always know just how to make it so oh yeah i know there's something oh yeah there's trouble on the way yeah i'll be there in the morning oh yeah might be here to stay you handle all the setbacks and you rise above the anger but they'll always be behind you and you'll always feel the danger so it goes yeah so it goes you know there's something to it cause you read it in the paper try not to think about it save it all for later so you know so you know and they always seem to know which way to go and they always know just how to make it so
  5. I've packaged up my starter template for the BBCSO sample library https://www.spitfireaudio.com/shop/a-z/bbc-symphony-orchestra/ It's not exactly a clone of their Logic template, more like a starter version with all the hard coloring/naming/icon setup work done. It's something you can start with though. Download it here https://drive.google.com/open?id=1l6By35cP4b4rvejEab6WdbESi5mGX-iE Here's the readme for the template BBC Symphony Orchestra template for Cakewalk by Bandlab 11/21/2019 This is my take on a template for CbB for Spitfire Audio's BBC Symphony Orchestra. It's based on the templates they provide for Logic and the Cubase conversions done by Alex Watson. You can find all of their templates at The Page https://www.spitfireaudiothepage.com/ To use this template with CbB you need to have installed the BBC plugin as well as the library. You will need to copy the track icons (which are mainly from the Cubase version, which seem to be slightly altered versions of the Logic version) into your Cakewalk Track Icons folder. You can find this by opening the CbB preferences and selecting File->Folder Locations. The default is usually your Cakewalk content directory then Cakewalk Core\Track Icons. But it's best to just check the preferences to get the correct path. Copy the whole BBCSO folder included in this zip to that directory. On that same folder preferences panel is a Templates entry. Copy the "BBCSO Basic.cwt" file to that directory. Now when you do a new in CbB you should have the BBCSO Basic as a project template choice. The template is created using single instrument tracks of the VST3 version of the plugin. All the instrument tracks are disconnected synths. This allows CbB to load the entire template nearly instantly. With a disconnected synth you must first find the instrument in the Synth Rack, select it and at the top of the Synth Rack click the small drop arrow and choose "Synth Connected". This will cause the instrument to load. All the instruments are setup with all the articulations loaded and the Mix 1 mic set to full volume. Pretty much the default settings on the plugin for any instrument you load. Feel free to load the template and alter those settings to whatever you'd like. I don't believe there is any way to go directly from the instrument track in the trackview to the entry in the Synth Rack nor is there anyway to do the "Synth Connected" operation from the track itself. If I find some better solution to this I'll update this readme. There are a number of differences between this basic template and the templates Spitfire is providing. The big ones are: Only one basic, all articulations, template -- not the 4 Spitfire is planning. No sync plop, Pre roll, Count and Cue Start markers (so no pre-created offset to start on bar 5) No effect tracks, effect sends, or extra stem tracks The basic structure of the template is as follows. Each major group (Woodwinds, Brass, Keys, Perc, Strings) has a color coded track folder. The percussion has two track folders, since CbB doesn't support nested track folders. One percussion folder is for tuned percussion and the other is each of the single hit articulations (like Bass Drum 1, etc) This Untuned Percussion folder also has a track at the top with all the articulations loaded as well as separate tracks for each separate untuned percussion articulation. This is the only articulation breakout in the template. All of these tracks have a synth tied to them in the Synth Rack. The output of each of these is sent to a Aux Track in the STEMS track folder at the bottom of the template. These aux tracks are then routed into a FULL MIX aux track which is sent to the Master audio bus. At the bottom of the template is an additional PRINT track folder which contains clones of the STEMS aux tracks that are setup to be armed for recording and would allow you to save the resulting audio. If you don't print raw stems you can delete this entire folder with no effect. There are a number of ways you can setup this "after the track" routing to support all sorts of mixing and effect chains. I've built none of that into this starter template but there is nothing stopping you from adding another set of Aux tracks to receive effect versions of the stems and or bus tracks for feeding headphones and applying whole project level effects. Starting with this should save you a bit of time naming synths and tracks, loading icons, coloring tracks. Feel free to contact me if you find issues, the easiest way is via email or on the Cakewalk forum. Changelog 11/21/2019 First public release

  8. Hopefully nothing actually got damaged. If your mixer is like mine (MG16?) , it has a dual-voltage-rail wall adapter, and if the negative rail goes down or is wrong, it could cause audio path problems while not keeping the whole thing from appearing to "work". 11. Stumbled upon this in my memories again recently. The picture was taken in my hometown the year I was born. I've very fond memories of Canadian winters as a kid. Especially after seeing Empire Strikes Back, with all the snow. As an adult, not so much... I do miss it during the holiday season. But just for a couple of days. We rarely get snow here in Vegas and when we do, it usually melts the second it touches the ground. But in February 2019, I got to see a thin layer of snow on my house that remained for several hours.
  12. Thanks for the explanation. It seemed odd to me to find three identical posts added within several minutes of each other to threads that were started in 2019, 2020, and 2022. "Wait a sec. Didn't I just read this new post?" Glad to see you found a set of steps that work!

  14. I'm surprised that I didn't address this a couple of years ago. In my varied career (I'm like @bitflipper in that regard ?) I've worked for software companies both tiny and huge. Hardware/software integration, bundling deals, etc. were invariably the bailiwick of the marketing department. The marketing people would get together and schmooze, do lunch, hang out at NAMM, and either work out concrete deals, or just do what they could to convince their colleagues that mutual support would be beneficial to both companies. Anyone who's worked in "shrink wrap" (as we used to call it back when software shipped in boxes on CD or DVD ROM's, but it meant "consumer" rather than corporate developed-in-house software) can probably attest to this. Despite the many benefits of BandLab's stewardship of Cakewalk, this is one area that at least up to this point, doesn't seem to have been covered. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but CbB has always relied on the simple fact that it's free to do its marketing (along with the stalwart advocacy of many YouTubers). I recall one appearance by the team at the 2019 NAMM Show, but there was a long gap between NAMM Shows, and these days, fewer and fewer companies even participate. As it transitions to payware, along with the revenues I hope comes greater attention to marketing, in this and other areas. I, and probably anyone else who's worked in development for shrink-wrap, used to roll my eyes whenever a marketing person would approach, because they were known for sometimes having unrealistic ideas about what would be possible and desirable. In retrospect, though, I realize more of what value they actually did bring to the table. They are the "boots on the ground" out there researching what (they think) people want, what new features might be important to add, etc. What they say of course should always be....reviewed, but there's great value in having a dedicated person or staff to do that stuff. Even if the developers are all musicians or whatever, they may not be working in the latest genres, etc. There have recently on this forum been more requests for better controller integration. This may be due to more younger people adopting the software and wanting to use it with pad controllers and the like. I'm an older people and I want to get more into realtime control, don't have a pad controller yet but I will someday. I need to crack my knuckles and spend some time in the woodshed with Ableton Live and Matrix View. I have one control surface, a Korg nanoKONTROL 2, and it's been an absolute pain in the rear to get it working with Cakewalk, despite the fact that one of the developers uses one in his own studio. For any who might question whether "official" support by the hardware company is that important, it would be good to know that both Cakewalk and the other company have your back if you have issues. I don't worry about this with plug-ins, because the companies I spend money with either state CbB compatibility or are reputable and established enough that if anything goes wrong, either the Cakewalk engineers or the plug-in developer will fix it pronto.
  15. Is Cakewalk going to NAMM. I feel like Cakewalk has evolved a lot in features and the community compared to the last NAMM. If so are they going to display some tracks made on Cakewalk?

  18. Hi everyone, We had an amazing NAMM 2019 show and it was so great to meet so many long time Cakewalk users as well as our business partners there. BandLab had a a beautifully designed space showcasing all the brands and Cakewalk had a very prominent presence at the show. Here are a few pictures. We had stage performances from several artists showcasing all the BandLab brands throughout the day including Heritage guitars, Harmony amps and guitars, and Tiesco pedals. We had a mobile recording rig set up and Cakewalk was used to record all the performances. Ashwin from BandLab and @Mike Balzarini did a fantastic job on the live sound and recording setup at short notice and everyone commented on how great the performances sounded. We recorded 8 channels for all the sets and I would upload the projects at the end of the day for @Jon Sasor and @Jesse Jost to mix and upload the finished tracks to BandLab using the new Export to BandLab feature that we just added in CbB. Jon did an amazing job mixing and mastering these at short notice. To listen to all the great music recorded live check out our NAMM 2018 feed. Jesse also posted some more information about the artists playing. Thanks again to you all for your support and for all our users who took the trouble to come to NAMM and meet us. It was great listening to your feedback and meeting you face to face. PS: I forgot to mention. This year all the demo songs played at NAMM came from Cakewalk users. It was great showing real world production projects at the show. Some of these were were full projects with all the plugin's intact. The Silverlight tune had tons of Slate plugins as well as an MP4 video clip synced to it. It played with no problems even at 256 samples on a Surface Book. Also some NAMM Videos that Meng shared in another thread:
  19. Hi all! I have been having an intermittent problem with Cakewalk (and maybe Sonar?) for a long time, but unfortunately I can't really reproduce it reliably. I preview a lot of wav files using the browser, and sometimes certain files "bypass" the preview bus and somehow play back anyway, often REALLY LOUDLY, making me jump in my chair. No meter in Cakewalk moves, but I can see the sound card mixer software reacting. It doesn't happen very often, but when it does it seems to affect a specific file: that file always has the same problem every time I play it during that session. I just had the issue with a wav loop, but after restarting Cakewalk, the same file played back normally through the preview bus. ? So I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this? I just had the problem on Cakewalk 2019.09 build 70. I don't know how to troubleshoot or to properly report it...
  20. I try to only update every fourth version or so of Komplete, like going from K10U to K14U. True, that way I won’t get a megazillion of new Expansions each year, but I couldn't care less. It saves me a lot of money. The only exception was back in 2019 when I purchased an upgrade from K10U to K12CE. The reason being there were indications at that time NI was considering going subscription. As software subscriptions are a definite no-no for me, I decided to get the latest and greatest as a perpetual license while it was still possible. Thankfully, I was later proved wrong; NI came to their senses.
  21. For the first time in its 120-year history, the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) is inviting in the general public to check out the latest innovations in musical products, recording technology, sound, lighting and much more. While the in-person event was canceled for 2021, the NAMM Show is going virtual. The virtual Believe in Music Week will feature live performances, access to the online marketplace, seminars, artist talks, award ceremonies and more Jan. 18-22. https://attend.believeinmusic.tv/
  22. Hi folks, Like we did last year at NAMM we'd like to showcase a few projects featuring the diverse work that you all do. At the booth, we like to have a playlist of projects that show the breadth of work done by our users with Cakewalk by BandLab. If you would like to have one of your projects considered for our showcase please post a link to the music in this thread with maybe a screenshot of the loaded project if possible. If you have a great sounding project that were produced primarily in CbB and showcases the application please post a link to the music in this thread with a screenshot of the loaded project. An easy way to audition mixes is to publish a mix of your project to BandLab and embed the BandLab link. (click the bandlab icon on the toolbar in the post editor to embed) The ones we picked last year should give you some guidelines on stuff that could work as a demo. NAMM can be noisy! Guidelines: We need a project file for a submission so please don't list songs that you cannot submit as a project file. All projects will be played from a Surface Book 2. We have some pretty heavy projects that play fine on the SB but freezing tracks might be required if the load is too much. Plug-ins. We normally have a suite of all Cakewalk plugins as well as some of the more popular third party plugins installed (Waves, NI, Melodyne, Slate Digital, FabFilter, ..) Please indicate what 3rd party plug-ins are used in every submission. If accepted we'll try and accommodate installing the plugins used if resources are available. We're looking for some diverse material so things like modern electronic music, film scores, jazz, metal, rock, etc are all viable candidates. Project's that showcase heavy use of certain features or production techniques are also viable candidates. e.g vocal comping, multi tracked drums, vocalsync, melodyne, advanced mixing, parallel compression, sidechaining, etc. We can also accommodate video files if the project has a video to accompany it. Video projects are attractive for demos. If you do have a video preferably submit a MPEG file or a format compatible for playback within CbB . The video must be synced to the audio. You must have rights to share the music and may need to sign a release form Accepted projects will need to be uploaded to a shared folder or a download link will need to be provided by you Time is short so we'll need these by end of next week to get prepped. Thanks!
  23. In my initial post, I had typed "no VSL suggestions, I can't justify that kind of money". But then deleted that line before posting. I didn't want to influence anyone's suggestions by eliminating anything up front. The first time I heard VSL was at NAMM in 2008. I walked into their booth and was almost lifted off my feet by what I heard. My first question was why the VSL patches that came with the Kontakt factory library didn't sound anywhere near that good. My second question, "why is this so expensive?" didn't need to be asked. Two downsides to BBO: First, although the basic library is free the add-ons that truly make it pro-sounding are not. Buying the entire collection would be over $1,500. Second negative: dongles.
  24. Someone got me started on this today and did most the of the heavy lifting so I completed the file today by cleaning out the illegal characters and adding Juno Di drum kits to the file. Here is what seems to be a good, working INS file for the Roland Juno DS complete with patches and drum kits. Thanks to those who worked on this before me and please post any improvements you might make in this thread. Gary ;) Roland-Juno-DS-200-ins.zip
