  1. Here's John Lehmkuhl's video on using the BBCSO with Unify.

    This gets into what I said about using different cores for different instruments..

    I was looking at a similar thread on VI:Control and I saw a post I did.   One of m "favorite" things.  Of course I forgot to write it here.

    It's easy to set up split keyboards. but you can also split by velocity. 

    So you can set up the kind of effects you get in libraries like Omnisphere, Indiginus, OTS, etc.  Play a note harder and it becomes a hammer-on.  Or play a note harder and it can go from one synth pass to another one on a different synth.   Or from a piano to a guitar, etc.   It's easy to do and offers a lot of possibilities.

  3. A few thoughts:

    1) If there is a program with an interface you don't like, Unify may be able to fix it.  A little work there and it is easy to use.  Any many programs come pre-Unified.
    For example, I really don't like the new Spitfire interface.  It stopped me from buying anything from them.  I  didn't even download the free LABS instruments.  But after playing a few with Unify, I downloaded all of them. 

    I haven't tried to use it for my Tarilonte-engine stuff, but I'm sure it would work.  Make a bunch of presets for the patches you like--which should take fifteen minutes, and you'll never be cursing Engine again. 

    2) If you have a program like Falcon that is single thread, it is going to totally poop out your computer when you try to layer the sounds.  Take two or threpresets from any of the Falcon presets or expansions and put them together and wham!  It can crash with as little as that. Because a lot of the presets they sell are loaded up with a ton of stuff inside.  Load as many Falcon Patches into the multi-threaded Unify and use the full power of your computer.  It's been able to handle everything I've thrown at it.  And you can save the whole thing as a preset.  And you can make new knobs that can move a lot of the other knobs at once. 

    3) Hooking up MIDI programs that drive VSTs from another trackcan be a little tricky in DAWs.  You have to put the MIDI device in the right place and have it drive the other, etc.  And sometimes I have to remember how to do it.  It's a breeze to do in Unify.  Once you've done it and saved a preset, you can call it up any time and change the instrument you want to control.

    4) what if you want to try out a new VST, but don't want to have Unify scan all your VSTs?   Just drag the .dll in and you're good to go.  I usually go there if I quickly want to try something out. 

    While you're checking out a new VST put in a tag like "piano" or "guitar" etc, save it and then you can find all your pianos with a quick search.

    There's a lot more stuff it can do.  The biggest problem is you have to take the time to learn how.  The UI is not the greatest. 

    But i do think the sounds are worth more than $47.50.   It's not much more than the price of some expansions, and less than many.  Lehmkuhl is a giant as a sound designer.

I think the idea is to get more credit and money to the people who have made Omnisphere what it is over the years.  I applaud that,  but I wonder what the future of Omni is going to be.  Is there going to be an Omnisphere 3?   Wouldn't this new paid content be exactly what we'd expect in Omni 3? 

    I'm still hoping for another library like Keyscape and Trilian.  For example, Guitarscape or Synthscape.  Give us a whole set of deep-sampled instruments, plus a free set of new Omni sounds to go with it.   But when Spectrasonics releases a nylon guitar as an "extension, then does that mean no GuitarScape is coming?

    I guess it depends on what you want, but it is a very deep library. I get tons of use out of it. I find it very inspiring.   Fooling around with the Balkan vocalists led to this:

    I'm not familiar with Monolith or Elysium, but Balkan Ethnic Orchestra is really great and lists for 339 euros.   Even on sale, it's going to cost you.
     

    If I didn't already have BET, I might have considered this deal rather than wait for the summer sale.

  7. By the way, the free Sonic player is not new.  It existed in version 6, and maybe before that.  

    HALion is arguably set up better than Kontakt for making your own instruments.  You don't need to know how to code and it comes with knobs and sliders that can be dragged onto the interface and easily matched to parameters.  And it has features to automate the sampling process. 

    The idea is that if you create a simple instrument in HALion and want to share it with a friend,  you give them the files and they download the free player and they're good to go.  I don't know if you can sell instruments, but maybe you can do that too.

I finally got Synthesizer V and the Natalie Voice.  This is my first try.  I spent many, many days tuning the voice.  It still sounds somewhat synthy, but it is still realistic enough to freak out my wife. There may be easier ways to do it, but this was the only way I could get it close to where I wanted it.  To me, it's like a bucking bronco--the singer just wants to do what it wants to (tons of crazy vibrato!) and you do your best to pull back. 

    I used a MIDI track for the melody, but I didn't refer to Karen Carpenter's vocal to try to make it sound like her.  I never plan to use Praat. 

    I sung constantly when I was young--I even fronted a band for a few years.  So I know a bit about singing, I just can't do it anymore.  I can spend a week working on a vocal in Melodyne, but it still sounds so bad I find it painful to hear.  Creating a track with Synthesizer V is very slow painstaking work, but nowadays it's actually faster for me than doing it myself.  

    My YouTube Channel on the Metaverse was a total flop and I got my original one back, so my new project is to record some of the dozens of songs I've written over the years with Synthesizer V and make videos.  If anybody responds to any of my songs I'll probably  get a real vocalist.  When I have asked singers to record my songs in the past, it has been a nightmare because I kept asking them to do it over and over. 

    My arrangement is Picked Acoustic, Picked Nylon, and Cinematic Studio Woods for the Oboe solo.

    A real joy to see you back at work.

    I have used HALion a lot over the years and there is no limit to the number of layers aside to the system requirements of the instrument and the resources of your computer.   I would suspect that it works with multiple threads, because you can't layer up with Falcon (IMHO the most similar instrument.

    Using Flex Phrasers I would do layers like a bass part, drums, piano and guitars.  You should check this out  You might want to show how they can be incorporated to theses instruments in future videos. . (I haven't watched your FM lab video yet.)  Basically they are super-duper arpegiattors which take their technology from the Motif.  They can be played with one finger, or if you can play--and you sure can!--the results can be amazing, very similar to what you get from ujam pianos.  Where it gets interesting is when you layer instruments with different flex phrases. 

    I did a video on this little-known feature once.

    This is one of the worst videos I ever did, but it is also one of my most popular,  just because many people are curious about how to use them.  I wonder if this new version of HALion makes it easier.   Sadly, Yamaha/Steinberg has expressed no interest in adding more content.

  10. I have Vintage Vault 3.   I'm going to wait for VV 5.  Someday it may be $149 to upgrade to that. Or $199 at the most.   They charge the same for any version of Vintage Vault.

    In the meantime, I have so  much yet to explore in Vintage Vault 3.  😀

    But I love this series and highly recommend it to everybody.  I like having sampled synths.

  12. Venture Capital and mergers  are beginning to be a thing in the music software business. 

    I do have some experience with these things in large US corporations and I worry, but I guess we'll see how it plays out.   Native Instruments is still kind of Native Instruments, so hopefully UVI will be too.

    No, they are just ensemble voices.

    You could give Emvoice a try for free and see what you think.   People use it to sing lyrics.  I really don't know how it would sound as ahs, etc.

    And there is also a free demo of Synthesizer V, which is a more sophisticated vocal instrument--but I think a bit harder to learn.   I am pretty sure it would give you the results you're looking for it, if you're willing put the time in.

  14. If you're looking for a more pop background vocal  (not solo), you should consider Orchestral Tools LA Sessions.  It has the usual ohs, uhs, ahs, ehs, and some nice swells and scoops.  I prefer it to the Eastwest library.   I love the sound.

    I remember Ben Osterhouse releasing a product for Kontakt 6 and when people complained, he released another version that worked with Kontakt 5. 

    Maybe there are features in Kontakt 7 that Sample Logic wanted to use.
