@Bapu Ok, I just finished a call with my bandmate and he has a working DAT. He does not want to sell it but would be glad to lend it to me to do the transfers. His machine is a Sony DTC-A6. I would plug it through my Scarlett 2i4 through the audio inputs. I don't know if there is any easy way to capture the RAW digital output from the coax or optical outputs into a wav to save the DA and AD conversions. If you know how to do this let me know.
Of course you must be willing to risk sending the tapes over and accept the risk that I can't recuperate what is on them for some reason like the tapes have gone bad over the years, etc. Anyhow, I'd be willing to give it try, no prob. If you decide to send the tapes over, I will have him do a quick check first that his machine is still functioning correctly before you send anything.
And I'll try not to hit that 'Erase' button I see there in the picture! 😆
I don't need the raw data, just 16/44.1 or 24/48 wav files (one continuous WAV file per tape, I can break down the songs from there).
In fact it's great that he does not want to sell it, as after I get these copied I'd have no use for the device anyway.PM me when you have tested it and think its in working order.
And yes, I'll take all of the risks and would not hold you or your friend responsible for the condition of the tapes going in or coming out of the process.

Yip I have .. its a sony portable DAT and I just did exactly that recently. DATs I had from 90s. Only way of getting them off the Dat player is via a stereo mini jack into the Audio I/F ... works fine though.
I also have orig I/O box for it but its outputs are coax and good old optical
Only prob for you maybe .. Im in Ireland ( south coast Cork )
I can ship you the tapes and pay you for your time to transfer the entire 4 tapes to 16/44.1 to single WAV per tape (I can break up the songs afterwards).

I already have SL Pro 9 and Wavelab 10.
I don't see a need for Nuendo, even at $269.99 since I rarely use Cubase 12 (or 11 on the elicenser for that matter)

I downloaded the latest installer ran it and it opens but then closes almost immediately.
Anyone experience this? This did not happen on the last update.
[EDIT:] Even did a reboot, same.

If nothing else, a Distressor is great on the way in so you don't clip the converters, even if you decide it's not in your workflow to strap it over the master.
Eventually goal is to have a pair of distressors too (at minimum for kick and snare on the way in).

Can't you achieve that with todays modern Plugins?
Maybe. But case in point.
Watched a video with that Whitesea guy and Glen Fricker do a test of a free Distressor, Slate Distressor and a real Distressor.
The free was hands down dismissed as far inferior to the Slate and the Slate was considered 'pretty good' but it was decided that the real thing was the real thing by far.
That in part drove my decision to give a hybrid system a try. Worst case scenario if I'm not satisfied; I can resell the gear as it all respected hardware on the intertubes.

I've recently added hardware to my studio.
My plan is to:
2 x 500 series HRK ST552 tape emus into WA Bus comp for vocals
Fatso into Heritage Audio for drums
2 x 500 series HRK ST552 tape emus into TK Audio Bus comp for bass
2 x 500 series HRK ST552 tape emus int Serpent Audio on the 2 Bus
Of course, I have some 'learning' to do with his hybrid setup.
As well on the input side I've changed by interface to 3 Apollo x8p's and 1 Apollo Twin X.- 1

Some yes. some no.
The problem with guys like Chris and I (I'm 7.75" from wrist to to tip of middle finger) is we have too much hand for six strings. Whereas the spread on a Ric or P-Bass gives us breathing room.
My Gibson EB-3, Danelectro Longhorn, Hofner 'Beatle Bass' and Warwick Thumb basses all have narrower necks than a P-Bass but the spread on the strings is still wider than a 6 string.
