  1. I've been searching in vain for the graphic that shows the many thousands of dollars invested in each link of the pro music production chain in order to achieve the highest possible recording quality, only to be delivered to the listener in mp3 format through a pair of $2.00 earbuds. It might have been in a thread in the old Coffee House. Does anyone have it?
  2. The 1909 update was forced on me last week. It re-enabled the WiFi adapter on my desktop PC and a few other things I had disabled. It also reset the power management on some of the USB hubs to allow Windows to shut them down. I had that disabled before the update. Those are the main things I've noticed so far. Haven't run into any real problems yet.
  3. Thanks for checking and for reminding me I could bind these functions to some other key combinations. I created alternate key bindings and they work fine, but I wonder why the defaults are broken for me.
  4. Just got around to installing the latest release. The first thing I noticed is that the keyboard commands for Go to next marker (Ctrl+Shift+Page Down) and Go to previous marker (Ctrl+Shift+Page Up) aren't working. Has anyone else seen this? I use those shortcuts all the time, or at least I did. . . .
  5. This video helped me a lot. It's for an older version, but hopefully it will still apply.
  6. Ha! I haven't thought about SMPTE for years. It really bugged me to give up a precious audio track for SMPTE, but it let me do things I couldn't do otherwise.
  7. My first MIDI computer was an Apple IIe. The Yamaha DX7 was a big deal then (mid-1980s), but I got a DX9 instead because it was cheaper. I don't think you could edit individual notes in the software, but you could record what you played and then copy and paste sections together into a song. Then I recorded it all with my Fostex X-15. Still have the Fostex in my closet, but the Apple and the DX9 are long gone. I switched to an Intel computer and Cakewalk for MS-DOS when it came out and have been running some version of Cakewalk ever since. I still use MIDI in every project, though more and more software instruments are replacing some of my MIDI hardware.
  8. This doesn't answer your original question, but I've had the same problem so I try to remember to use the Duplicate command to clone the track before using Melodyne. That makes it easier to recover the original clip(s).
  9. Kenny, that Kiss shred is hilarious!
  10. Yes, and I'd add Beethoven's late piano sonatas. Something almost mystical going on there. . .
  11. Second generation 6i6 has been working flawlessly for me for two years.
  12. Thanks for responding. I just had a look at my last audiogram. It charts results for 125 to 8k Hz, but I have no idea how much of that range the hearing aids are actually capable of correcting. Beyond that, I don't wear them when I'm using headphones anyway. If Sonarworks headphone calibration software were tweakable by the end user, you could theoretically incorporate your own personal correction curve into the headphone calibration. Of course, even perfect correction wouldn't automatically make me a good mixer. 🙂
  13. I started this up with the sound off and wondered what was going on. Then I turned the sound on and I still wonder.
  14. Since reading about the Sonarworks profiles for headphones, I've been wondering whether there's a good way to create a custom profile based on your own specific hearing loss using data taken from an audiogram. Creating mixes that translate well is hard enough under the best of circumstances. It's even harder when you know that what you hear may not be the same as what other people hear even if they're listening in the same room as you. If you have hearing aids, and I do, my understanding is they're not designed to approximate the experience of normal hearing. They can be tuned to enhance specific frequencies where you have deficits, but generally only in the range of human speech and not, for example, in the very low and very high frequencies. Thoughts?
  15. Dave, have you listened to "Lyle Lovett and His Large Band"? The CD, at least back when I bought it, was mastered at a much lower level than most recent recordings and sounds great on a good system. Clever songwriting and fine arrangements too.
  16. Thanks, Jim. I figured there was no good way around it when MS decides they want me to update.
  17. My Windows 10 Home PC says 1903 is available: "When you're ready for the update, select "Download and install now."" Can I put this off indefinitely?
  18. Yes, I saw a video or blog somewhere that talked about using Melodyne as a composition tool. It's been very helpful to me for working out harmony parts that I can practice singing until I'm ready to actually record the part.
  19. As the shock starts to wear off, you'll face the challenge of surviving the next weeks and months. Like others have said, you can't rush it, you just live it and give yourself time to heal. Take care.
  20. Hopefully not too off topic, this Pearls Before Swine riff on the Abbot and Costello "who's on first" bit: https://www.gocomics.com/pearlsbeforeswine/2014/10/19
  21. You can also do this with the Process > Find/Change command. It's a little clunkier than the Event Inspector, but it's an extremely powerful way to manipulate many different attributes of MIDI data.
  22. A lot of us old guys remember when it was a big deal to have four tracks (tape) to work with. While I'd never go back to that, it helped you develop a certain mindset about arranging and recording. You really had to think about what was needed to get the song across as well as what you could do without. Now I try to remember to ask myself "do I really need five guitar tracks?" or whatever.
