  1. Hi @Gswitz,

Yeah, I have an Arturia Keystep which I can either connect to my DAW via USB or MIDI.

Then there is my OB-12 hardware synth.

I also have an Acorn Masterkey 49.

Trouble is, I'm having my own issues with synchronising stuff at the moment so I'm using step sequencer to create simple patterns so I can test things out, so I can't say whether or not they work with Cakewalk yet. They certainly worked okay with REAPER and Studio One.

    cheers

    You told her?

    Rookie error.

Forgiveness is always easier to obtain than permission.😉

Haha! Yeah, I always forget that one :)

Mind you, obtaining forgiveness is still virtually impossible... I am often reminded of my "unreasonable spending habits."

So, I should just get this thing and explain that all it means is that we will be in the soup kitchen a couple of months earlier than expected...

  3. Also slightly frustrating for SONAR users was when looking into various pieces of hardware or software SONAR was rarely ever on the list of tested/trusted DAWs.

Roland used to package a "lite" version of SONAR with their interfaces, presumably because they owned it at the time. They now give away licenses for Live lite.

So I have always felt like I've been using the "poor man's" digital audio workstation, although I have to add then  I have NEVER felt the it was in reality, if you know what I mean. If a discussion came up about, "which DAW do you use" on non-DAW forums, I'd be the odd one out using SONAR.

    Never put me off though...

  4. Hiya @Jim Roseberry :)

Thanks for taking a peek and commenting, much appreciated.

I guess that until I update my pc I'm going to have to put up with those glitches. And even then, such is the way with computers, there are no guarantees, is seems.

I powered up about half an hour ago.

I opened task manager and stopped as many background processes as I could. And then I ran LatencyMon again. Here is the main page after just six minutes of running. And, to be honest, until a massive spike, DPC was running at around the 200uS mark:-

    LM_Main_190209.jpg

And here is the Drivers page:-

    LM_Drivers_190209.jpg

As far as I could tell there was no real activity spikes showing up in Task Manager.

    So I'm at a loss.

I have to admit that I also use my laptop for occasional gaming, which may attract derision from some I am sure.

I use a Logitech keyboard and mouse when in my studio, so tasks are usually running for those, although for the above test I had shut them down.

Fortunately, just a hobbyist, so I can put up with those glitches I guess.

Thanks again for your time Jim :)

    cheers

And to the OP, Chris, I have not read all the posts in your thread, but when you spoke about perhaps getting a new audio interface, and you are using one now with 6 inputs, I thought I would just mention to you that Arturia just introduced a new desktop audio interface at NAMM a couple weeks ago with USB-C that they claim all types of great things about, i.e. low latency, incredible signal to noise value, high db value.  Called the AudioFuse Studio, due out in 2 or 3 more months.  MSRP: $999

    https://www.arturia.com/products/audio/audiofuse-studio/overview

It does look impressive and I like the sound of "inserts."

    Not impressed by USB-C though.

I have an Arturia Beatstep Pro and a Keystep, both with USB-C connections and, although mine are okay and probably safe in a home studio situation, they are prone to failure.

Mke, the BandLab representative at Winter NAMM 2019, stated emphatically during more than one interview that the Core product Cakewalk by BandLab will ALWAYS be free.

Yes, so I believe, as this has been mentioned elsewhere.

Plans can change, but that is the corporate line as of now.

    I understand that.

Regardless of all that, though, let me ask this,

If a product is free, but not fit for purpose, then it doesn't really matter whether it is free or not.

I raised the original post here before having really unboxed Cakewalk, so it was, I suppose, me being a bit lazy by asking, in the general forum, if all was well.

I could have kept my gob shut, but I like to talk, and I also felt it would be an opportunity to re-connect with peeps from the old forum, on which I was very active, especially in the Songs forum.

Since posting I have had a chance to play and I like what I see so far. Would I change anything? Not really. There is a keyboard shortcut request I am considering asking for and there are a few things more I would like the scroll wheel to do, depending on focus, but that is about it. I feel that I am picking up where I left off when I jumped ship.

So, is Cakewalk "fit for purpose?"

    Yeah, sure.

Would I recommend it to anyone else?

    I already have.

    cheers

    Good feature request though.

Do you think it is worth raising?

Not sure if I'll bother with screensets, but thanks for mentioning it. Screensets is something that never really gelled with me and I even unbound all the keyboard shortcuts back in SONAR because I was hitting wrong keys with my big fat fingers and causing a visual nightmare haha!

    cheers

    Yeah, why is CbB free?

Is it just while it is in "development?"

    cheers

    andy

So, going back to my original post, I also asked the question, "Is it just while it is in 'development'"

Let's go back to that for a moment.

I didn't hang around when Gibson dumped SONAR. My decision, and one that surprised me really, as I am very much loyal to "brands" (tools) that I like and I really did like SONAR. Having jumped ship I lost interest and didn't open SONAR again until a couple of weeks ago. When I opened SONAR a message popped up saying something like "can't access the server to check license." Well, near enough, can't remember exactly.

So I thought, "okay, let's give CbB a try."

I've not sat at the software, comparing CbB to SONAR in great detail. I basically jumped around, re-learning stuff as I needed to. So, for all I know CbB could be identical SONAR, but I wouldn't really know for sure.

Looks similar... Seems to behave the same... I quickly got back reasonably up to speed, which was helped in part because CbB used my old SONAR preferences, which despite not using, I didn't uninstall.

I believe, from reading various posts, that BandLab took the code and run with it almost "as-is," but did they? I think there were some issues early doors but I didn't really follow developments. New versions have been rolled out... So that, in itself, indicates that CbB must be a little bit different to SONAR, even if it's just "under the hood."

This is why I was posing my questions here. Perhaps I should have made this clearer up front, but the whole topic took on a life of its own.

So, been sat at Cakewalk (I'm not going to use the by BandLab suffix any more) for a week now. I have issues, but mainly with my setup and nothing I can really put back on Cakewalk. I still need to do some loading tests, just using soft synths and effects, because if I can be happy with the amount of stuff I can load a project up with then I will then try it out on my Surface Pro laptop, which is currently running REAPER, and quite well I hasten to add.

Okay, that's me for a bit... On to page eleven :D

    Yes, indeed.

As the saying goes, "time is a healer," but it can take a very long time. The time will come when the tears stop and the fond memories remain... Until then, hang on in there.

Not many people would know what that flower is 🤩 but my dad won awards for his garden and I always search for them when at a public garden. Just something I do. Sorry now I'm way off topic.

No, no, flowers are good :D

I can't grow 'em though, most stuff I touch in the garden turns brown and crispy :(

So, yeah, talk about flowers :)
