Talk about a STEEEP learning curve... :D Takes years to get good at it 2.

I'm just guessin' here but I think learning my way around a keyboard to control the synth versions would be harder. As I already play guitar, bass, mandolin and a bit of banjo, lap "guitar" would be a little less steep of a climb . . .🤠

  2. I will always remember the day Elvis died - I was 17 . . . My family and my mom's sister's family were all hanging out at the Verde River and had a radio on when the news broke. I remember this not because I was a fan (I'm not) but because my mom and aunt were in tears - absolutely devastated over the news. All I remembered was the fat sweaty Vegas Elvis but apparently they remembered a younger hip swinging rebel rocker.

I learned a few of his songs over the years for some cover bands and at my mom's request but there were ONLY two I ever truly liked - One was really old (Marie's The Name) His Latest Flame originally recorded by Del Shannon. I still play that one once in a while

Guitar Man would be the other but I think Jerry Reed did it better.

Yes, I'm aware my fellow musician friends all hates me for not liking Elvis.

LOL I have actually been considering that . . . As pretty much everything I record is "live" with a real instrument except drums (Session Drummer 3 and Addictive Drums) I was thinking maybe I can figure out how to play one. I bought a mandolin at a yard sale and managed to learn that and I have recently been fooling around with Open G tuning on one of my acoustics. I think lap steels and resonators are always Open tunings so it might be worth a shot. Funny how the real instrument is also so much cheaper than a virtual one . . .

  4. I would bet someone probably told Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull) somewhere along the line that you can't have a flute lead in a hard rock tune . . . Honestly I don't think the actual instrument used matters nearly as much as the how the whole song comes together. Everyone likes different aspects of music - I'm drawn toward the "story" of a song and if the lyrics speak to me I could care less (usually) if it's one guy with an acoustic or an 8 piece with horns and strings

i NEVER want to listen to music on a cell phone! 🤢

I have tried to get this through my friends heads forever . . . If you want me to like a song send me a link do NOT play it for me on your phone! I'll tune out and not like regardless of how good a tune it might be. When I send one of my originals to someone I beg them PLEASE listen in good headphones or at least a good bluetooth speakers. I hate phone speakers!

  6. In the process of getting a new PC setup and after reading a number of posts here I was going to give Command Center a whirl. The two screenshots below show what I have in "My Products" on the website (A lot) and the other shows what Command Center says I have (Nothing)

I'm using the same login - Username and Password on both. Am I doing something wrong or does the Command Center no longer work? I'm just trying to make sure I get ALL the goodies I've been accustomed to on the old PC

Great tip!! Never thought of that.

BTW, I noticed you friend standing up in the back left. Is that used for recording too? : )

There's actually two in the pic and they are both crappy vocalists! - Guess you missed the smaller one (with no head) toward the center of the picture . . . In a couple of the bands I played in I used those to help sell t-shirts haha

I've been told I have enough basses.

    And enough guitars too.

Who told me that? Why The Lovely Lady (she who must be obeyed).

I am thinking about trading off the Squier Fretless Jazz for an Epi 335 in cherry red.

PRO TIP - When you need to 'sneak' one in just take an empty case out with you and tell her your getting new strings or a set up and use that case to smuggle in the new one . . . 🤠

Didn't realize I could include guitars . . . Ain't gonna line them *all* up but a couple of my favorites I do most of my recording with

  10. This will probably be dumb for most of you but I can't figure out how to do it.

I have a vocal track I *really* want to keep but between singing there is a VERY audible breath noise when inhaling. A sample is below - I added the red line - that's what I want to do.

Is there a way to put a floor on the track saying "everything below this point don't play, above this line leave it  alone"

The track is extremely zoomed in and not as "hot" as it looks

Here's one Bapu would appreciate. I got a new bass on its way..... Should be here tomorrow.

I needed a new one that was tonally more versatile than the one I had. I'm thinking the Bartolini's in this will be better than the ones in my Ibanez GSR.

That's pretty sweet looking! I, too, have bass GAS but my tastes are simpler . . .

  12. I'm a little unsure as to the *actual* number of plugins installed but . . . "Too many" probably covers it. The real issue I have is there are plugins installed and selectable that I no longer even know what they are or do. I've actually been trying to look up each one and mark as "needed" or "not needed" as I prepare to setup a new recording PC. One thing I'm trying to do is clean up all the no longer working "demo" or "trial" tidbits I've installed and never followed through with. Wish there was a way to print a list of installed plugins . . .

  13. I'm going to be transitioning Cake to a new PC in the next week. I will be (for purposes of getting *everything* I can) Installing Sonar Platinum X2, Platinum X3 and then CakebyBL.

I have at my disposal 3 SSD Drives in the new machine. Obviously the "C" drive will have the OS. I'm wondering what file locations would be best for the main Cake/Sonar programs, VSTs / Instruments and Project files

My first thought is leave Cake on the C then split VSTs on the second drive and Project files on the remaining drive.

What say y'all? Does this seem to be the best layout? I will also have two USB 3.0 External Drives for downloads, storage and my extensive music library. Not sure if putting anything on those would be wise but if it will work fast enough I'm OK with it. Just want to get the best performance I can out of the limited resources available

  14. Squier by Fender has some very inexpensive basses - I've been a Fender guy my whole life and would definitely recommend a Squier or Made in Mexico Fender for what you need. I use mine for recording all the time.

@Dega sounds like we might be coming from the same place. Indiginus and a couple from Orange Tree are the only ones I've heard that didn't totally bum me out and can be useful in a mix. However not a kybd player and not a fan of the Kontakt UI/workflow. There are many expert users out there but it's a bit of a learning curve to get them to sound like what you might be used to with a naturally played instrument. I got close to making the commitment when I lost my network of live players, but it would take some effort to get anywhere near as productive. jmho of course...

That is *exactly* my concern . . . not being versed in piano or keyboard I'm not sure I can fit another new instrument and mindset into my tiny old brain. I watched a number of videos on the Momentum plugin and those folks were getting some killer sounds out of the pedal steel - I download the plugin and the free steel samples and all I can make is noise lol - Other than trombone in grade school I have been a guitar and stringed instrument guy since I was 14 and that is a looooong time ago. Always learned and played by ear and never learned any music theory or had any lessons. I'm pretty sure that's why I struggle with any synth I've ever tried to use.

  16. As a singer / songwriter my use of Cakewalk is almost completely live recording. The only synth instrument I ever use is Session Drummer 3 or Addictive Drums. And even that is using MIDI loops I bought from somewhere else. I use Guitar Rig and and Amplitube but don't think that's the same thing.

I record live Vox, electric and acoustic guitars, bass, mandolin and a wee bit of banjo. I have really been wanting to add some pedal steel or resonator slide guitar to some tunes. I tried my hand at something called Momentum which had some cool audio samples but I have not been able to make it sound right or good. Pretty sure it's just me and my inexperience with synths. Is anyone here using these instruments successfully?

Lame question but, is there one that's *really* user friendly and easy to learn that truly captures the sliding aspect of these instruments? Any recommendations, advice or directions to beginner tutorials would be greatly appreciated!

  17. I have seen some instrument plugins (free) I was interested in but that say they require N/I Komplete or Kontact. I was looking through the stuff they (N/I) have to see if it was something I wanted to mess with. I have Guitar Rig 4 Pro from N/I installed already and I saw that a Guitar Rig 6 "Player" (free) is included in the free Kontact player download.

I'm guessing a bunch of y'all here are using this stuff so can you tell me . . .

Will it break my (paid) version of Guitar Rig if I install all the free stuff?

Is it worth using to begin with. I've picked up so many plugins over the many years of using Sonar / Cake that I'm not using or didn't like and not sure I want to clutter up mu system with more stuff. But . . . I also don't want to miss out on something useful that maybe takes advantage of newer technology.

What are the feelings and advice from those of you using the N/I stuff? Use it a lot? Hardly use it? Any specific modules that stand out as "must have"?

Where do I start? What do I *need* to have to installed?

    So many questions!

    And what's with all the freakin' K's . . . ? LoL

  18. Hi All!

On the old Sonar site there were a handful of Pro Channel modules available for sale - Obviously those links (Below) are no longer valid.

    http://www.cakewalk.com/products/by-category/prochannel-modules

I had (have) Sonar X3 Platinum but don't believe these were included. If they are - Where would I find them? If they were not included, Is there a new place to find / download / purchase these? Or was that functionality added to CakeByBLab? If it was how do I access them.

Thanks in advance for getting me straight on these!
