  1. Odd...

i found stretch.ax and .hlp in my sonar platinum folder.

i could not get regsvr32 to register it.

i booted an old machine with vista32 and as far back as sonar 8.5

opening plugin manager shows stretch as active though it is not in any fx menus so i added to a menu and saved it, but it still doesn't show in the menu...

    any idea what's going on?

    thanks

Hi Keni, I have exactly the same problem (some waves saved from a tape recorder). But in my case the tape recorder went to slow (sound to low). So I asked the same question in my own words some days ago. Here is the thread:

It is really a hard thing to accomplish this stuff in CbB and it had been so easy with my old tape recorder (Varispeed). My first attempt was using Audacity and it really worked. But on one hand I am not sure about the quality (even if I exported 32-bit float format) and on the other hand it was complicate to find out how much speed change is necessary. But because my tracks were recorded with a click and I also know their song keys, I could calculate the new file length and then use Audacity's "Change Speed ..." function.

    Thanks Marled...

I'll give this a try today.

i wish i had the original tape as i still own a deck with varispeed, but i was given a file.

i previously did this for another cluent/friend as i had the tape and did the transfer. The issue there was simple as the original tape was 3.75ips but my deck only does 7.5/15ips. Varispeed wouldn't go that far so i digitized it at 7.5, stretched to 200%, then transposed the octave.

but in this case, the digitized file is by some unkown amount less than that. Maybe tape stretch or recoded on dying batteries or such. Using a piano i determind the pitch center to be close to Bb on the first tune and found it to sound more natural near f#/g. Guessing the feel/sound of the guitar lead be to believe g is probably right. But when i use melodyne it shows the pitch near d? Weird!

the recording is also extremely muddy. Recorded from a less than optimum location...

    difficult...

thanks. I forget about the stretch plugin...

It's true, no pitch, but if Cakewalk can at least get the tempo correct, then Keni's version of Melodyne Editor should be able to use "select all" and adjust up (or down) one cent at a time to find the desired pitch.

Good idea, except i can't tell the correct time value while it sounds chipmunk.

i just tried a few more attempts and i'm burnt for the night. Too many problems with a 2 hour recording that has little clarity to begin with. Tomorrow i'll try again with fresh ears...

    thanks for the help.

Hey Keni . . . as Mr. Sandlin says above . . . inside CakeLab's latest "big" update . . . "élastique Pro time/pitch" should work to do what you're looking for.

I must admit I've had some troubles trying to get a larger complicated project to adjust tempo upwards / downwards using élastique, but I'm thinking to adjust one track as you're looking to do should work pretty easy.

When they released that update, there was a great thread by Craig Anderton that I found very useful over in the old forum regarding this:

    http://forum.cakewalk.com/Changing-Tempo-of-Entire-Song-with-201809-m3787767.aspx

     . . . hopefully you'll find it useful for what you're trying to do ? . . . (oh well, just noticed you're there in post #3)

    Thanks noynekker...

you might notice my post in that thread immediately beliw Craig's first 3...

Sadly, trying to stretch the pitch separately from tempo has been less than optimum and this recording is two long sets of songs so the issues are difficult.

melodyne free standing does a decent job of pitch shift for it but time stretch not so good as it doesn't average tempo so there are many serious fluctuations that occur...

right now i'm missing the good old days when stretching affected both pitch/tempo in relative ratio...

Audacity is in the "OK" range for results. I don't think you have a 64 bit engine in it (I could be wrong). I usually really only use Audacity for special effects, and pitch shifting for that reason - making sounds "odd" on purpose. It does work, though.

    Thanks...

i guess i'll continue to work without audacity then...

it's supposed to be easy to do in melodyne's universal mode but so far i'm not having any luck figuring it out.

i've been using v-vocal all this time as melodyne essentials doesn't have the tools i needed and it eas very simple. I upgraded to assistant the other day and finally editor today but other than my normal pitch editing, the myriad of melodyne tools, options, and methodology i find it a bit difficult...

  6. 10 minutes ago, John Sandlin said:

Well, I'm not having any luck on how to use élastique. I cheat and usually use Audacity for pitch work. Cakewalk by BandLab documentation needs to be updated, I think, to include How To Use for the new toys.  Melodyne should do it too - if you have a non-Trial/Demo version.

    Thanks John.

yeah, funny how things that used to be "normal" are now so hard to do.

i do have melodyne which i just upgraded to editor but the learning curve there is daunting. I've been on this for a few days now.

i can stretch the audio in CbB and then use transpose, but trying to get the values to coincide is currently beyond my math.

...and using this method I must do each song individually. There are two long sets. If only stretch would do both i could easily repeat the process n one song until the pitch matches the known pitch of the song, then apply that percentage to the entire 2 set recording...

How good is audacity results? I could d/l a copy and use that?

You're looking for élastique Pro time/pitch which is now included in Cakewalk by BandLab.

Thanks John, but how do I make it shift audio as well as tempo? Currently, stretching with it slows the tempo of the track, but not alter the pitch.

  8. Ok... This seems to be far more difficult than it used to be.

i have a file that was digitized from an old tape recording. I don't know who or how, but both the tempo and pitch is too fast/high.

i used to simply stretch the clip and both tempo/pitch adjusted relatively, but now only tempo changes.

i've been trying to do this now using melodyne, but as a very new melodyne user, the learning curve is daunting.

is there some simple method in CbB that allows the pitch to change with the stretch?

    thanks...

  9. I have been consistently asking for items to allow the ease I had with layers.

Right now, I find it as easy comfortable for my normal workflow.

...except for zoom issues and such.

I spend far too much time getting to a workable zoom.

Why must the track be emphasized larger than the lanes when they are open for editing? If I lasso/select multiple clips in lanes why must me resulting zoom have a tall track and shorter lanes when I wanted nly the lanes to begin with.

Why must I be forced to see the selected/promoted clips on the track while editing clips? Yes, it makes it easy to see which are the selected, but confuses my eye and more so if I have lanes open on more than one track.

oops... sorry, I didn't mean to push this thread into my old complaints, but it's always on my mind and in my face.

The better polyphonic algorithm is in Editor and Studio.  May want to skip Assistant and save up for Editor. Check out the Melodyne feature matrix.

    Thanks.

I'll look now for sure. I thought assistant had complete feature set for monophonic editing, but editor up for polyphonic. I guess I read the table wrong last time i looked.

I'm planning on editor but i need a ride to town to put more cash on my prepaid card. I decided to buy assistant as it's a step in the right direction and reduces the next upgrade fee whether while the sale is on or after.

I'm off to re-read the comparison list in you link.

    thanks for the heads up!

  11. Thanks Guys!

Excellent news. The way I would hope it to be.

Now hoping for getting more cash on my card in time for the editor upgrade special. I've been using V-Vocal most often as essentials is lacking in features I need/use regularly. I believe assistant brings those tools so I will be able to switch (with a bit of learning curve. I'm fast with V-Vocal) and I continue to dream of polyphonic editing with editor!

The plug-in works but there are still issues with algorithm detection, tempo detection and audio to midi not being smooth as previous releases.

The Melodyne Studio trial (CbB does  not include Melodyne Essentials) is not part of a CbB install or upgrade. It is a separate install on the  add-on menu.

    Upgrade order does not matter.

    Ahhh...

That's what I was remembering. Thanks for the confirmation. I remembered seeing essentials somewhere in the CbB update process. So all I need do is ignore it once I upgrade to one of the paid versions and always follow the update notices only from melodyne?

    That sounds simple enough...

Will this result in two separate installs or will the paid overwrite the bundled?

Here's hoping the current issues are resolved soon as well as updating CbB to ARA2?

Celemony has not updated Melodyne since the initial release of 4.2.

    Thanks scook...

Yes, I know but I had not upgraded to 4.2 unless the essentials version did so. I'm headed for editor, but as I have trouble getting money on my prepaid card as quickly as I might want, I decided to buy the assistant upgrade now and hopefully the upgrade to editor within the next few days.

When 4.2 was first released, there were many posts regarding issues. Some were regarding the settings for drag pitch to midi and I don't remember if/what else.

As I am hoping/planning to buy the editor upgrade within days, I'm holding off on the install and thought it a good idea to know the current status of compatibility between programs.

I'm also a bit unsure of how things proceed after I install either update re: CbB updates afterwards. Do I (can I) avoid downloading melodyne essential updates included with CbB?

    Thanks again! You're the best!

  14. Recently there was much discussion regarding the latest melodyne update and problems in CbB.

i was wondering where this is right now. All apoears well with my cake version of essentials and i just bought the upgrade to assistant while on sale. I want editor but i won't have the difference for another few days and figured assistant would still get me closer. With luck i will be able to upgrade that to editor before the sale ends.

...but i have not yet downloaded or installed as i read too many posts regarding problems with the latest and CbB.

    anyone have any updated info?

    thanks!

Also, remember each octave doubles the frequency of a note. So double BPM is an octave up in pitch. -12 on pitch restores the pitch to normal.

Feel like I should mention that this is NOT true of MIDI, just audio... lol.

    Thanks John...

i had to do something similar about 1.5 years ago when a friend asked me to digitize a 3-3/4 tape recording and my tape deck is only 7.5/15 ips... i think i slip stretched it to twice it's length then using radius mix to transpose -12....

i'm gonna try that next as using loop editor will be much more tedious as I must chop it into smaller bits for the editor to accept it.

making it more difficult is i really don't know what/how the original clip was created.

    Got it

Want to stretch and drop pitch. That is a Loop Construction View thing.

    1. Open the clip in the LCV
    2. From the LCV Clip menu enable Stretch On/Off
    3. Set the Threshold to 0
    4. To change the clip length modify the BPM
    5. Then adjust the Pitch/Fine Pitch as desired.

For example to create an effect like running a tape at half speed double the BPM and set Pitch to -12.

Once it sounds right, bounce the clip for best fidelity,

    Thanks scook...

OK, now I'm getting somewhere. Numbers aren't making sense, but at least the changes have an effect. I doubled the tempo (in the LC window) and dropped the pitch -4 and it sounds somewhat normal....

I just sent a quick copy to the friend I am trying to fix this ofr to see if it sounds more normal to him. The recording is very old and muddy. Someone had transferred it from an old tape.

I'm surprised that -6 made the pitch seem slurred as I expected double the speed would need half the pitch? (-12 was totally out of it as was -6)

Thanks for the quick solution.... Now to get it fine tuned for my friend. Gonna be a lot of work as the file is two sets of songs and the system wouldn't work with the whole file. I selected a single song,  Copied it to a new track and bounced it to itself to finally get it working...

  17. Trying to slow tempo and lower pitch of a very large file.

tried using loop construction window. Complained too big so i chopped off a portion, moved it to a new track and bounced it to itself.

i can enable clip looping or clip stretching but neither allows me to clip stretch (ctrl-click on clip end).

    what am i doing wrong?

So cool to have you back on the team!

I'm about to see if I can address this. I didn't see the convert notice when it happened. Possibly due to posting from my ipad mini's screen with it's pop up touch keyboard using so much screen real estate.

Hmmm... On second thought I might wait until tomorrow as my pc's are all down for the night. It might be easier on one of them instead of the ipad. I used to have my machines on 24/7 but (sadly?) that is not now.
