  1. I used the word "if".  I'm not asserting, I'm speculating.  I was under the assumption that Cakewalk could continue to be used, just that it wouldn't be available for download anymore.   Then I had people commenting that it was going away completely and that is why they recently started requiring online activation.   So it would make sense to wonder "if".  What other reason do you think they instituted online activation?   I'm open to any theories.

  2. Yep, that's exactly what happened.   I needed to move things around to temporarily accommodate a usb sd card reader to download the latest update for my Roland td-17kvx v drums.  And I did learn to power up the drums and my Korg M50 before starting up Cakewalk.  Thanks for replying.

  3. When I go into preferences,  midi devices, I used to see the following in inputs and ouputs:

    Focusrite USB-MIDI.                                                             TD-17

    Now I see:

    2 - Focusrite USB-MIDI.                                                      2 - TD-17

These are my audio interface and e drums.

Everything is working fine but I'm just wondering what this means.

    Thank you.

  4. Lol.  I'm just glad I've got it sorted out now.  Having another brain look at the problem helps.  Thanks again man

Yeah, those were the right manuals.  So I got one problem solved and of course another one comes up.  Trying to figure how to record my e drums using si drums vst where each drum piece gets its own track.

  5. John, I unplugged the usb and yes!  I was able to record the combi sound to an audio track.  I have my Korg connected to a Focusrite scarlett 4i4 interface with 5 pin midi cables.  I also have the Korg 1/4 inch outputs going into the L and R instrument inputs on the 4i4.  Just this week I added the USB connection in order to run the M50 plugin editor vst.  Can't thank you enough for pointing out something so simple to fix my problem.   With all these connections and daw software, sometimes you miss the forest for the trees.  Again, a million thanks.

  6. Hello.  I'm trying to figure out how to record Korg M50 combi sounds to Cakewalk.  If you're familiar with the Korg, there are prog and combi sounds.  I know how to record prog sounds (midi) but the combi sounds are composed of multiple sounds.  I tried recording to an audio track but it crashes Cakewalk.  To record in midi, I believe I'd need to create a separate midi track for each individual sound that comprises the combi sound, but I'm just not sure.  So I'm reaching out to all the pros out there to help out an extreme amateur.   Thank you very much.

  7. This is what I need to do with my Korg M50's plugin editor vst.   I can only load one instance of the editor.  The editor is a vst of the M50 so I can select the prog, combi, drums, etc.

If possible, could you tell me what to enter in my inputs, outputs, channels in the vst and midi tracks?  I'm trying to figure this out and I can see you've got a good handle on doing this.  I really appreciate if you could help me.   Thanks in advance.

Also which tracks would I arm for recording?  The vst, the midi, both? Thanks again.

    TTS-1 is a 16 in X 4 out synth.

There are several ways to create a project with 1 instance of TTS-1 using all its I/O.

After adding the synth to a project, add 15 additional MIDI tracks.

Set the output of each track to TTS-1 and specify the MIDI channel in all the tracks.

Now there are 16 channels set up, one for each TTS-1 input.

Assign the instruments on each track (or in TTS-1 on each channel) as you have done in the past when using one track.

If you want to send the 16 channels to more than one output

    • add up to 3 more audio tracks
    • set the inputs on the audio tracks to the additional TTS-1 outputs
    • open TTS-1 and assign the channels in TTS-1 to the different outputs by clicking on System then Option like this

  9. Heck, I couldn't wait.   It worked!  I think the reason I couldn't find the answer is that I wasn't looking for track height.  I was using track size.  Thanks a million my friend.

  10. About to go to sleep but I'll try it tomorrow and report back.  I very much appreciate you looking into this for me.  I knew there had to be an answer.  Thanks again.

  11. The three screens below show what is happening.

    1. Session Drummer opened.

    2. Collapsed track.

    3. "F" entered.  This is the view I want when I initially open Session Drummer.   I've seen others have this view when they've opened it.

  12. Here's what I've seen on video tutorials but for the life of me, I can't figure out how to accomplish this.   I open session drummer which creates 12 tracks.  I've seen when this is done,  all 12 track header strips will appear in the track pane.  When I do it, the main track is the only track visible and I have to collapse it then hit "F" and then I'll see all the track header strips.  How can I open session drummer, or any vst that has multiple tracks, come up in the track pane, by default, with all the track header strips visible like this:

    Track header strip

    Track header strip

    Track header strip

And so on.  No need for collapsing,  dragging and moving.  Nice, neat and organized.   I'd be most grateful if someone could reply with the solution.

    Thanks in advance.

Well, the great thing about maps is that you can have custom templates for inputs and outputs from different source or form feeds to specific outputs.

In my case, I use mostly BFD for drums. BFD1 has different layouts and fewer drum pieces than BFD2. Not only that, through the years I've tried many input methods, for example, drums fron scratch through mouse&keyboard with arbitrary keys for i/o, then some were GM drums, and then V-Drums. All of them had different inputs and outpus, which, through maps I could easily switch and even have campatibily between all of them. I find them as a key feature really. Also, having the names of the piece kits, and arrange them in any form is really handy. Great feature

How do you setup your inputs and outputs when using a drum map for a vst and using v drums to trigger the vst?  Thanks in advance.

If you want to use the sounds that the M50 makes, then yes, you have to record its audio output.

After googling for days and reading and re-reading threads on this topic, I found a post from 2010 that explained how to get midi data created from my Korg M50 into audio format.

    1. Record your midi as normal.

    2. Insert a new audio track.

    3. Make sure the output of your midi tracks is set to the interface's output.

    4. Record enable the audio track, begin recording and play the midi tracks.

    5. You will now have an audio track, in audio format in the new audio track!

I can't believe this solution was so difficult to find.

  15. I have Sonar X3 which came with Session Drummer and Melodyne installed.  If I download Cakewalk by Bandlab, will I be able to access Session Drummer and Melodyne from Sonar X3 to Cakewalk by Bandlab.  If yes, how would I do that?  Thank you.

  16. I setup my Korg M50 as a vst with the plugin editor, connected to computer via usb.  I record midi.  I'm trying to convert that midi to audio, but when I bounce the track to a new audio track, it's still midi.  I can convert the cakewalk tts-1 vst midi to audio successfully.   I'm a newbie.  From what I understand, is it correct that the only way to record audio from the Korg is to plug its output directly into the input on my interface?  Thank you very much.
