  1. The current v1.12 installers told me that I had a version of v1.12 installed already. I did, but the file dates on this version are newer, and the file sizes are different. I'm guessing that the couple of minor fixes in the current update didn't get their own version number.

So, even if you have v1.12 installed, get the new installers.

Blue Cat Connector has been great for sending audio and MIDI between multiple instances of Gig Performer, and between Gig Performer and Reaper, with no noticeable latency.

    Blue Cat Connector

A couple of examples. I suspect that many of you will recognize the voice in the first video.

This includes an example of sending audio from Cubase to Cakewalk on the same computer.

I recently moved from a 4400 square foot house with a studio to a 700 square foot apartment.

I give up on everything. Lol.

I live alone, and went from an 1800 sq. ft. townhouse in the U.S. to a 550 sq. ft. apartment in France. I donated all of my DVDs and Blu-rays and 75% of my CDs and all of my furniture to a local charity 2nd hand shop before I left. Because of tax laws in France, you can't find unfurnished apartments or houses to rent. Buy empty or rent furnished. I got to know my landlady and she kindly allowed to remove the furniture in the second bedroom (which just barely held a double bed and has no closet. The one CD rack I brought with me is in the 2nd bathroom, blocking the sink. I invested in 2 König & Meyer guitar stands and can now get 10 basses in the space where I had 3 tripod stands. I bought a small desk and a 17" laptop to replace the desktop that I left behind. I bought a couple of 6.5" Focal monitors to replace the large monitors I sold. I replaced the Rumble 200 I sold with a Rumble Studio 40. It all fits. Just barely.

If you have one or more kids, then you need the second bedroom. If not, then a small studio is possible. I am slowing learning how to live in much less space. Good luck with your transition.

  3. I haven't watched the videos yet (next up), but I'm laughing already. My first job out of college was two years ('78-'79) as Asst. Crew Chief on the Neutrino beam line at Fermilab (a particle accelerator physics research center). The Higgs boson was discovered in 2012 at CERN. Never thought it would become a musical joke. OK, off to YT to watch the two videos.

    From the CERN website:

How did physicists know it was the Higgs?

On 4 July 2012, the ATLAS and CMS collaborations announced the discovery of a new particle to a packed auditorium at CERN.

This particle had no electrical charge, it was short-lived and it decayed in ways that the Higgs boson should, according to theory. To confirm if it really was the Higgs boson, physicists needed to check its “spin” – the Higgs boson is the only particle to have a spin of zero.

By examining two and a half times more data, they concluded in March 2013 that, indeed, some kind of Higgs boson had been discovered.

Discovering the Higgs boson was just the beginning. In the ten years since, physicists have examined how strongly it interacts with other particles, to see if this matches theoretical predictions.

Interaction strength can be measured experimentally by looking at Higgs boson production and decay: the heavier a particle the more likely the Higgs boson is to decay into or be produced from it. Interaction with tau leptons was discovered in 2016 and interaction with top and bottom quarks in 2018.

But there is much more still to learn about this elusive particle.

And you get a load of excellent plugins with the Pro version.

Beat me to it. And the spectral editing in Acoustica Premium is terrific. I bought a license years ago, and shortly thereafter uninstalled SpectraLayers. It is a superior product. And v7.5 should be released soon. Can't wait. Also note that the Premium version supports ARA2, and works great in Studio One.

Here's a song (and video) I did this week.

The song is the Dead Kennedys' Holiday in Cambodia but with new lyrics about an anthropomorphic poseur dog with Short Man's Syndrome.

Obviously. Some songs just write themselves.

    Also, there's some guitar nonsense.

Fabulous, JB! Made my morning. Here's my Chihuahua, Peanut, when he's pretending to be sane. 😋

    🤣

Hats off to Hyundai (brand) for their success with the Kia brand. Kia was (and still is) the secondary brand to the Hyundai (car). Back in the '90s, before Hyundai's quality improvement efforts, the Hyundai cars were pretty awful, and Kias were terrible. To quickly improve product quality ahead of their international push, Hyundai did something brilliant. When Toyota released the 5th generation of the Camry, Hyundai bought the entire 4th gen manufacturing line and moved it to Korea. Their next generation of Sonatas were 4th gen Camrys with different sheet metal. They reverse-engineered the 4th gen Camry and adapted what they learned to their own design and manufacturing efforts. They still needed to offer that 10 year warranty to overcome existing buyer hesitation due to previous awful product quality. But...it took them several years before they applied those learnings to Kia. On a relative level, Kia was their Chevy to the Hyundai Oldsmobile (before GM corrupted it). Now, I've met several people who think that Hyundai cars are the second brand of Kia. THAT'S excellent marketing. I spent 9 months riding around Seoul in taxis when I worked there. The 'mobum' (deluxe) taxis were the new Camrys/Sonatas, while the regular taxis were Kias and similar. They were miserable.

Hyundai has come a LONG way.

Once bitten. Twice shy. Oops, make that trice shy. My sympathies. No schadenfreude today. Just the pure joy of knowing that Waves is no longer polluting my DAW. Some great plugins, but worse than woeful business strategy and execution.

    Got this from VI-Control:

From an empty MsoundFactory hit the "edit" button. Then go to "Generator". Then load up a "Drsampler" and just in the middle to the right you'll see the libraries pop up in a menu.

So I’m pretty sure it won’t work with LE as you can’t access “edit”.

Glad that I bought a license for MDrummer the last time it was on a good sale. 🙃

Installed it, activated it, now going through some of the presets.

Then I learn IO have to d/l the sound content. first one is over 3gb. The second one, all drums, is 1gb. Then there is another 20gb of free content to explore!

Gotta work in the morning. So I won't get a chance to hear them all.

This was worth the $40 I spent.

I already owned MDrummer, so I had a lot less to download. Meldway turned out to be more than 40 GB. There were also 2 updates that were downloaded and installed (about 5 GB total).

This reminds me, for any instrument if you look at the Device GUI (such as the Meldaway Grand Piano), you can see whole bunches of tweakable parameters that are accessible without having the Edit Button that's in the full version.  That might be a good way for people to decide if its worth $39.

And I already have AAS' Multiphonics 1 & 2. If I ever decide to build my own instrument, I already have a platform to do that. So, I've got all I need from Melda. And good tip on the instrument parameters. Meldway is still downloading. I'm on  500 mbit/sec fiber link, but Melda isn't delivering at that bandwidth (actually about 5% of that).

Deal runs out soon and I'm still undecided. Does anyone know if one can upgrade from LE to the full version? Does MSoundFactory LE count toward the bundle prices?

And which sounds are included in the free player version?

Yes, you can upgrade, but... I just purchased this and am downloading the Essentials and the two pianos (3 GB, 3.5 GB and 40 GB!). I did have an upgrade option to the full version, but Melda can tell what you paid for it, so my upgrade price was 269 €. I have ZERO need for the full version. So, this was the bargain for MSoundFactory that I've been waiting for.

  12. One more thing about Reaper themes...

Learning and using Reaper without Kenny Gioia is a much greater challenge, and ALL of Kenny's videos use the default theme. Some are harder to follow when using a non-default theme. I know. I've tried.

If Studio One had not implemented their Arranger and Chord tracks when they did, Reaper would be my daily DAW for sure. I too will gladly fork over another license fee for v7.

Fortunately for me, I bought a new license after my v4/v5 license expired when v6 was released. And when was that? Like 4 years ago? My current license is for v6/v7. If v7 is around as long as v6 has been, I'll have gotten about 8 years out of the last $60 I paid them. That's a true bargain for such a solid, complete DAW.

I see Reaper as more of an engineer's tool than a music production tool.

I tend to use Reaper for simpler projects (audio editing, learning songs, recording a VO for the wife, etc).

I gave up trying different Theme's years ago.  That rabbit-hole can burn hours of time... and doesn't seem to change much (anything?) function wise.

Reaper is incredibly CPU efficient... and is particularly good for audio editing.

The Item Editor is similar to Samplitude's Object Editor (lots of realtime control).

I'd actually like to see the "road plan" or stated development goals for v7.

This is exactly the reason I stopped using Reaper and went back to Studio One after Sonar Platinum went splat. I was wasting WAY too much time playing with the UI, trying to get it where the look of it didn't bother me. If the themes were professionally created and curated against the default Reaper theme, I would be happy to pay for one that worked for me, knowing that it was complete and supported and that if there was an issue with it, it would be corrected. If you read the comments on the popular themes, one common thread is that something/some feature is missing vis-a-vis the default theme. If you don't need that missing feature, no problem. If you do, you're almost always SOL.

What do I dislike most about Reaper (and I do like and respect it) is: 1) the menus, and 2) the window that plugin UIs open in. That said, Reaper is awfully good at a lot of tasks, and no other DAW has Kenny Gioia.

These MIDI packs are not meant to be used outside of EZDrummer. You need EZDrummer to use them.

They also typically work best with the specific EZX or SDX drum kit they were created with, that is, they use specific kit pieces defined in a specific drum map.

  16. One of my favorite concerts ever. He was in his late '60s or early '70s. The show was in a theater by O'Hare airport in Chicago. Fantastic acoustics. Tony was singing along with his combo. Short intermission. Tony and the combo returned, and as they started playing, the curtain behind them went up, revealing a full big band. Wowzers, that was great! Short intermission. Tony, the combo and the big band returned. As they started playing, the curtain behind the big band went up, revealing a full choir! Blown the "f" away! Superior live experience.

Damn, but he was great. RIP, Tony. You will never be forgotten.

  17. I just noticed the release of v7 of Captain Plugins Epic. The v7.0.0 installer was code signed on 27 June 2023. The update is free if you have v6, $39 if you're still on Captain Plugins v5. The VST versions load and run no problem, but I'm getting a blank GUI with the VST3 versions, so beware. I'll send a message to their support. To download the update, you'll need your original v6 email with the download link, or use the Download link in the web page footer. I did not have to reauthorize v7.

    Captain Plugins Epic

EDIT: I am getting a blank VST3 GUI in Gig Performer. The VST version loads fine. In Studio One, the default only shows the VST3 version in the browser. The GUI opened OK, but I had to reauthorize it. Odd goings on. I think I'll clear the plugin list in Gig Performer and do a full rescan and see what happens. So my guess is that you'll have to reauthorize in Cakewalk. Can someone confirm?
