    Compressors are a dynamics processor, they affect amplitude, so it can be fairly subtle. Like many things it can take some ear training. I think it's helpful to start off using compression as a tool. Compressors are used to keep a signal level, you can flatten peaks. Finger pickers picked them up pretty quickly - it helps tame volume differences between fingers, the occasional too loud or too soft pick. They can be helpful with rhythm guitar. In flattening peaks you can then increase the volume and that will give you more sustain and can also fatten the sound a little. Like many tools if you start to use them you'll find that different compressors behave and sound different from each other. It's a good idea to read articles about guitar pedal compressors and check out youtube.

    I have two - a Roland FC-300 that I use to control a guitar synth/modeller and a Yamaha MFC10  that I use to control Ableton Live. The Yamaha is setup using note on/off. I was going to program another bank with controller data, but I'll wait until I see your video.

    For me it's a quick way to sketch out ideas. My workflow is different than what Chandler demonstrates. I have a guitar synth/modeller and have patches setup in that. Once I record a loop I keep it playing and will audition some sounds - normally I'm not tweaking the sounds, but I may. I'll play with different rhythmic/tonal/harmonic variations for the next part until I have something I like and then record that. I have a midi pedal board so I'm not mousing around with the recording, although I am with the synth - I usually select patches from the browser. Rinse and repeat.  CbB doesn't do sound on sound recording with audio. You can do different loop lengths and don't have to stop to convert a recording to a groove clip and stretch to the length required. It's a different work flow.

    For me it's playing around and working out ideas. If I happen to get something I like I'll export and then record it later.

    You should consider doing one on setting up a midi foot controller. The documentation doesn't seem to match the implementation. I got it working thru trial and error.

    Also, there are selections for controller under MIDI for Note on/off, Note index, Note index(on), but I don't see anyway to select a given note - 0, 1, 2, 3, and so on. Is there a way to use note on/off to control the vst? Am I missing something?

  5. I'm not familiar with Spitfire's Soft Piano VST, but from my experience pianos don't necessarily sustain notes. They have a sustain pedal that you need to hold down. EPs may not sustain notes. The fact that you have a whole note doesn't mean that a particular instrument will sound that long. What happens depends both on the real instrument and how it's implemented in a given vst. If you have a MIDI controller what happens when you hold down a key?

    That depends. In the world of HW and SW amp modellers and isolated speakers and so on you can add fx after the amp, after the speaker. OD may work, but it depends on the signal and the OD that's used. Wah may work, but will be different, but of course, you can put a wah before of after fuzz/OD in an analog signal chain. If you record only the sound of your amp and particularly if it's distorted you'll be limited to what you can do after that.

    Well, I noodle around on guitar. I know that an OD pedal sounds different before the preamp and after.

  8. If you put the cursor on the scale to the left of the waveform you can drag it up or down and the waveform will scale in the track. That's not significant - adjust as you like. Are you only recording one track? If so you may want to record a little hotter, but you should be able to raise the gain without any problem. If you are going to multi-track the amplitude of the tracks is additive so they don't need to be too hot. If you are going to mix you will probably want a final level of -3 or -6 dB so there is some headroom to work with when mastering.

    The only reason I would upgrade from 9 std to 10 std is that 10 now supports VST3 IIRC. I'm hoping that means that they handle plugins better. I don't plan on upgrading for the prices they're asking.

    Have you done that?  Also win10 has a lot of background tasks running by default. Disable the ones you don't need.

    To see which apps have permission to run in the background, open the Start menu or Start screen and select “Settings.” Click or tap the “Privacy” icon in the Settings window.

    Scroll down to the bottom of the list and select “Background apps.” You’ll see a list of apps that have permission to run in the background with an “On/Off” toggle. The default setting for each app is “On,” allowing each app to run in the background if it likes. Set any apps you don’t want to run in the background to “Off.”

    That's a yes about midi control of the Input Echo. I'm using both an MFC10 (midi foot controller) and a Korg NanoKontrol. The Input Echo I want to control with the foot pedal, I use the NanoKontrol to fade the volume or fb. If I can figure out how to control multiple Input Echos directly with a foot pedal, then I would also use the foot pedal to start/stop the transport & play either cells or columns in matrix.

    For the looping for me the key is cutting off the input to the delay and letting it play on while I play over it or start another loop. I play guitar so I need a pedal to enable/disable the feed to the delay. When I want one loop to fade out currently I plan on using the NanoKontrol to reduce the fb.

  12. To some extent I'm eating my words. I was playing around with Frippertronics last week and I had one of those doh moments. I was using delay lines like Fripp or Reich and realized I could sync them up to the tempo. You can then make it hybrid, the tape loops and prerecorded or looped tracks or matrix. We're still left with the problem of using a foot controller. Using either Cakewalk or Live there are restrictions on MIDI mapping.

    I'm using aux tracks for the delays and use Input Echo to feed a delay. I would like to be able to enable/disable Input Echo on the delay tracks, but I haven't figured out how to do that other than to navigate tracks (prev, next) and control the current track. In Live I can control the sends with a button (footswitch - MFC10) and switch between -infinity and 0 dB so I'm moving over to Live. It is workable in Cakewalk, but takes more tap dancing for a guitarist.

    There are still solutions in Cakewalk. Using a delay that allows you to turn off the input or using a looper plugin and so on.

  13. Add Input Echo as a track parameter to the Cakewalk Generic Surface. It doesn't seem like I can control the master bus. It would be nice to be able to control buses as well. If the  Cakewalk Generic Surface is based on an xml file is it possible to get a copy of it? 

  14. I like Echos and have used it a lot, although now I have to choose between it and Outer Space (Roland RE-201 clone), Overloud's Echoson, and IKM's Fulltone SSTE. Well worth $19.

  15. There may be a guitar modeler. The only vst guitar modeler I'm aware of is Blue Cat Audio's Re-guitar.

    It seems to be closer to a PU modeler than a guitar modeler. I don't know if they have a 12 string electric though. The HW guitar modelers that seem to do a good job of 12 string emulation use hex PUs - Roland/Boss and Line 6 Variax. If you have hex PUs you probably have the HW modeling...

  16. I have a Boss SY-1000, but the concept is the same. I have a mixer and it feeds both an audio IF and PA and/or monitors. The main outs from the 1000 go to the mixer. If I use the 1000 usb IF then the mixer channels the 1000 are on are routed to the PA. The mixer is a 4 bus mixer so signals can be routed thru an audio IF. With this setup I can also have the the 1000 go to Ableton Live and have fx and looping all thru the 1000 and also have the mixer tracking in Cakewalk and just the Cakewalk output going to the PA and/or monitors.
