  1. I am wondering if anyone with the full version of MSoundFactory has created a GM Instrument that works with the Free MSF Player.  I have no idea if its possible and I imagine it would take a whole lot of time to create, so I am not suggesting any one take the time to do it; just wondering if anyone created one already.

    However, regular audio such as the metronome plays normally.

    Doesn’t the metronome go directly to the Hardware outs? If so then possibly the master bus is muted.

    Good point about the using the metronome to verify that the setup has audio.  If the metronome is audio and is routed to the Metronome Bus, it makes sense to look at the Master Bus (which I lamented that it wasn't posted when I first replied).

    The last release of Cakewalk didn’t install the GM player so things just changed.
    You are possibly the first victim of this recent move.

    Since the Outputs of the MIDI tracks seem to be routed to the SI-Electric Piano, I assumed that the issue was not related to the lack of a default MIDI Player.  It seemed to me the SI-Electric Piano should play either of the two MIDI tracks shown (specifically the one selected/MIDI Echo on).

    Is there some way that the removal of TTS-1 as the default MIDI Player/Device would interfere with the MIDI Notes going to the electric piano?

  4. LOL.  I looked at the Alesis.ins file and remembered: I still have my ancient Alesis MIDIVERB!  I used it for sure, but I don't think I ever used an instrument definition file. Usually, I just pressed the Up/Down buttons to select one of the 63 reverb settings.

  5. Hooray! You found it!!!!

     FYI, back in the day, I made my own master.ins file that included all sorts of instrument definitions including variants.  With 4 Casio VZ-8ms I had 4 variants to reflect the User Memory Banks and there was a variant instrument definition for each of the memory and performance modes.  Did that with other gear, too--instrument definitions to reflect  different user bank configurations.  Used easy to scroll-and-spot headers--useful for editing the master file.  (See excerpts below.)

    It was a simple matter of using my Master.ins and choosing which instrument definition /  bank configuration to assign each port/channel.

    Took a lot of time to set up (and I abandoned the approach when I started using samplers), but it was so easy to use once the Master.ins file was set up.  Fortunately, for the E-Mu Romplers (which housed up to 4 Sound ROMS / SIMMs), one amazingly dedicated gearhead compiled Patch Name listings for almost all of the commercially available ROMs.  So it just meant typing in User Banks or banks for Custom Sound ROMs. Later on a couple of dedicated gearheads each wrote editor / librarians that would output *.ins that included the names of the User Banks!

    Editing DRMs (Dump Request Macros) was also fun!

    As for the Alesis.ins files, the one I have from 4/30/1999 8:00 AM shows up as 137KB (Cakewalk Express) while the ones from 9/22/2003, 11/5/2005, and 12/11/2011 all show up as 164 KB.

    I am guessing you have the Alesis.ins file, too.  (I had an MMT-8 at one point but I never warmed up to using it--workflow complexity and wonky buttons that had to be pressed just right.

    John was looking for the Korg 05R/W INS file which i believe is different than the overall Korg INS file.

    If the Korg.ins file has the details for the Korg 05R/W it's just a matter of selecting that model from the larger file.

    actually, if you have the Sonar X1 installers - someone mentioned it is in the instrument list there.

    The earliest korg.ins file I have is from 2003 and it is in a Sonar 3 BU folder.  So I suspect it might be in any Sonar from 3 to X3.

    UPDATE: Those are all 336 KB. I also have one from 1999 in a Cakewalk Express folder. That is smaller (205 KB) but has the Korg 05R/W instrument definition.

  8. I have the old Korg.ins file(2011) on my BU HDD.  It has the basic instrument definition for the KORG 05R/W as follows:

    Quote

    [Korg 05R/W]
    Patch[0]=Korg 05R/W Bank A
    Patch[7936]=Korg 05R/W Drums

    Patch[7168]=Korg 05R/W Bank G
    Key[7936,*]=0..127
    Drum[7936,*]=1

    I was under the impression the old ins files were still available from the Cakewalk site. I can't imagine that Korg *.ins files are not available.  Or is someone looking for a Korg 2024 file?

    Let me amplify that, you made a controversy where there wasn't any.  Or maybe I should say where there was absolutely no conflict between what I said and what anyone else had said so far as I could see.

    So the "Meh" emoji was a way of disagreeing with your choice to create a controversy aka a debate.  You then chose to use the tactic that could be described as revenge ("Well, if he's going to give me a Meh emoji, I'll give him one in retaliation.")

    As for your S/N comment, I still don't think my original comment was so controversial that it warranted a "Sure, but . . . ." reply.

    Personally, I really think the whole debate / controversy is a huge waste of time, but I felt your question deserved an answer. I hope this reply answers your question.

    Sure, but the problem here is that the larger icons in Sonar occupies more space. Simply changing the colour of the background square from gray to white would have increased legitibility, while the space available for text wouldn't have decreased. Also, the padding has increased for some unknown reason, making the space available for text even smaller. And to top it all off, the font size has increased, which is the third reason so little space is left for the actual text.

    What happens if, with the selection as shown, and the Smart Tool enabled, while CTRL is pressed,  you right drag a marquee around the notes you want to invert the selection of?

    I tried it here, and indeed, this did invert the note selection within the bounds of the resultant selection marquee.

    I just tried it and it worked here, too.  (I tested with  CbB 2024.02 build 098.)

    I record the piano, and the notes appear as I play. However, once I play it back, I can only hear the playback from my actual piano, not the DAW.

    I've tried recording and then unplugging the MIDI cable, but that doesn't work either. Once I unplug the midi, I then can't hear my piano either.

    30 minutes ago, Jenna said:

    But I don't really get it. I have an actual piano/keyboard that I'm hooking up to the computer with a MIDI USB cable . . . .

    MIDI data is not audio.  MIDI provides computerese that tells MIDI devices what to do (e.g., turn notes on/off, sustain notes, change various parameters, etc.).  DAWs can record MIDI data and audio. If you want the audio to be recorded on an audio track in a DAW you need a way to get the audio into the computer.

    If the yahama arius ydp-181 uses a USB cable, check the manual to see if it is just for sending MIDI data to the computer or if it can also send audio.

    If it just sends MIDI data, to record audio you will need to get the audio output(s) from the piano connected to the audio input(s) of your computer.  Generally people use an audio interface for that as those tend to be better than using an audio chip or audio codec built into your computer.

    UPDATE: I found a manual online.  It looks like (1) the USB cable is for storage only, (2) 5-pin DIN cables  are used for sending MIDI to a computer which can be done with a MIDI USB cable or a bona fide interface, and (3) there are no line level audio outputs.

    I saw references to speakers and to headphones. I'll let someone else address whether or not you can get headphone level audio into a computer and how to do it, if it's possible. I have only used line level outputs from MIDI gear.

    Quote

    Using Headphones: Connect a pair of headphones to one of the [PHONES] jacks. Two [PHONES] jacks are provided. You can connect two sets of standard stereo headphones. (If you are using only one pair of headphones, you can plug them into either jack.)

  14. BTW, I saw there's also a Back Stage Pass version of Cakewalk Next.  I mention that in case some of you might want to test drive the new Cakewalk Exchange Format.  Since the initial posts and discussions starting when the two new products were announced, I wondered if Next would be convenient for my workflow as a tool to develop ideas to be developed more fully in Sonar.

    Just mentioning this in case others might want to test a similar workflow that involves using both products.

    In the interest of clarity, I removed it yesterday before I saw @Terry Kelley's reply once I found the Back Stage Pass link / file by clicking on the "NOW AVAILABLE THROUGH BACK STAGE PASS" link.  I did not keep track of the time intervals between posting the emoji, realizing that @Terry Kelley might have been referring to the Back Stage Pass version, and removing the emoji.

    If someone wants to make an issue of it, I suppose Windows kept track of the time stamps and if so, I might be able to provide find those details.  😜

    Why confused? Scroll to the bottom of the Sonar page and you'll see DOWNLOAD. Hopefully you can handle it from there.

    In part because you didn't provide the web page you used, and the only Cakewalk Sonar pages I found that had a download link was for a Back Stage Pass file as @SirWillyDS12 stated several hours later.  It was unclear from your post if that's the link you had in mind.
