Very interesting. I tried all of these methods, then my IT intuition kicked in. Always disconnect and re-connect ( at least most of the times). Here's what worked for me:
Went to Preferences as suggested, tried all of the above suggestions, nothing. So I went back to the devices and unchecked everything in "Input Drivers" and "Output Drivers". Selected one of the other "Output drivers" (other than the one that was supposed to be selected), hit Apply. This at least got the track to start playing, still no sound of course. Went back and selected the correct "Input and "Output" drivers and this corrected the issue. Funny thing in IT, it may take different steps to resolve the same issue.
