  1. I ended up doing the clean install which included all the previous versions of Sonar I had installed, (Sonar 8, 8.5, X2 & X3, Splat & CbB).  What a pain!

CbB did open at that point but I could not open a project file without a crash.  I began to open project files via “Safe Mode” and after a long and arduous process I identified the plugin that was causing the problem.  Unfortunately, I have no idea what was causing the initial CbB crashes.

The project file crashes was caused by BReverb but I think I initially installed the wrong version.  If I remember correctly, there was a problem with BReverb at one point and an updated version for Sonar was released.

The problem with CbB crashing might have been a Win10 update.  I keep this computer offline but whenever I need to access the Web, it sneaks in an update and I don’t always see it.

Everything seems to be working as it should now.  Thanks for your help.

Problem is Cakewalk was working fine - then all of a sudden it will not open.

Equipment:  Dell desktop with Windows 10 Pro 64bit

CAUSE:  In my case it was corrupted creative soundblaster Z driver - or possibly a ##@&G@! microsoft update!

    SOLUTION:

    1. I uninstalled all Creative SOFTWARE

    2. I shut down computer and REMOVED the PCI-E sound card - restarted - then shut down again.

    3. I reinstalled the sound card & restarted computer

    4. Still had original Crative install CD - installed all driver and software.

    5.  Cakewalk opened again!!

    Thanks Ralph.

I've uninstalled my Focusrite drivers and Control software as well as Sonarworks SoundID Reference and CbB will still not open.  I really don't want to reinstall CbB but that's what support is advising, a clean reinstall.  I'm concerned that doing a complete uninstall will wipe all the previous versions of Sonar I have installed.  While getting everything back in is possible, it's a lot of work!

I was in the same boat a couple of months ago when I installed my M-Audio Hammer Pro 88. Everything was working until I shut off the PC. When I started up again, I'd get the splash screen for a few seconds, then gone. I contacted CbB Support, who led me through several steps. Ultimately, they had me do some registry edits, which fixed the problem.

    Thanks much for that.

Mmmm ..... probably things you have already tried.  I would make sure the program is updated and activated and connected to the internet (Bandlab assistant).  Make sure I have good drivers for sound interface / card.  Try other DAWs like Fruity Loops / Fl Studio, etc etc and see if other DAWS can see and use sound card.     Windows restore point if it was working before?

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks much, James.

  5. I have a fairly new install of CbB on Win10.  I've been working my way through various issues but so far it's been working.  Last night I got my Frontier Tranzport installed and was hoping to track some vocals this afternoon.  When I started Win10 and clicked on the CbB shortcut the program refused to open.  It would put up the opening splash screen and after one or two seconds, it would be gone.  I've  tried everything I can think of but it's no go.  I uninstalled the Tranzport drivers and even updated CbB to the latest version, (I think, as it won't open, I can't check that).

I didn't try to open CbB using the executable file inside the program folder, (don't see that making a difference though).  The only other thing I haven't tried yet is to completely uninstall CbB and then reinstall.  I don't really want to go through setting it all up again.  I was able to open other programs, even Splat.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

It's the VST that causes the number of changes - not CbB per se.

VST's are meant to wrap parameter changes in beginEdit/endEdit calls.  That way,  for example.. initializing a preset which alters 20 parameters is seen as only one change.  Some VST's dont' do this, meaning it's seen as 20 changes.

Automation can also trigger "changes" in the VST depending on the VST.

Thanks Mark.  That's interesting as the only thing that's different is I've moved to Win10 and I don't remember ever seeing this before.  I'll load up some other projects and see if I can locate the VST that's causing this.

Some software instruments count up the number of changes just by playing the project, which easily triggers Auto-save.

Thanks HIBI.  True but I don't think CbB is one of them.  Either way, after setting it to 100, it made no difference.

FYI, moving my Waves Licenses to a thumb drive did solve that problem, (at least, so far...).

  8. I been having some problems with my Waves licenses, (they keep deactivating), so I moved them from my HDD to a thumb drive.  Lo and behold the Auto Save began to work properly!  After a few hours of editing it began to start saving more often than the setting.  Not as bad as before but still....  Very strange.   I'll see what happens tonight.  Any thoughts would be helpful.

    Thanks.  Paul

  9. CbB  V2021.01, Win 10  is not following the Autosave settings.  I normally set it to 5 minutes and 5 or 10 changes.  It saves  almost constantly.  I can raise it to 100 changes and it still saves after several moves.  I think this may have been discussed a while back so if anyone could kindly point me in that direction, I'd be grateful.

    Thanks.  Paul

    Hi Paul,

As a person who was sincerely trying to offer the best info I possibly could based on what I know. I still pulled that answer out of my butt so to speak. I hope the concept at least helped some.

I simply see the ear as a pickup device which in your case is lacking in some areas and needs correction. Whether the correction is in two steps: Hearing aid>Headphone correction........................or one step. Headphone correction for flat response based on your ears. To me this would be the most comfortable.

In any case I'm not sure how we could get away from two curves. Certain frequencies may have been especially hyped in the hearing aids and they likely were going for intelligibility as a goal over a flat response. ....and I hate to say it- if certain parts of the ear are 'dead' to certain frequencies, then nothing is going to help that.

It's easy to suggest having this info but probably much more difficult to accurately obtain it, and this is such an individual thing that one case won't be like another. I hate to suggest augmenting with visual representations of the audio like a spectrograph, but maybe that would be helpful?

The thing is you won't know if you made a good mix. You will only know you made a mix that sounds good to you. The real proof is to see how it sounds to others who you totally trust after you think you have it ironed out.

    Good luck!

Thanks Tim.  I'll know more when I actually get some hearing aids.  I think you're right.  The hearing aids I  would need would likely be designed to hype frequencies that increase intelligibility vs. flat response so I'd probably not wear them while working on music.  If that's the direction I go, that solves the issue of wearing aids, glasses and headphones.  I've worn glasses since I was in my 40's so I've overcome the headphone and glasses issues.

Thanks to everyone for your responses.

Many, but not all , Costco stores have a hearing aid department. They sell reasonable quality equipment for less than you would pay in most other places and will assist you in fitting and programming the equipment you buy. They can also help you decide what style of hearing aids are likely to give you the best results.

The kind I have are small and fairly comfortable. I like them because they don't completely block the ear canal and you still get a fair amount of natural sound in the frequencies where your hearing is less impaired. I do have to fiddle with the glasses a little bit to get them to sit right.

Thanks for the reply and the information.

I'd be concerned that the "in-ear" type of aids could easily fall out if you were, say, mowing the lawn.  lol

I don't have hearing aids but my Dad does.  Feedback is very much an issue with many headphones and hearing aids.

There are a very wide variety in how hearing aids work and feature sets so I'd suggest talking with your Audiologist about your musician needs and expectations.  Many aids are not so much focused on purity of sound and flat response, quite the opposite as they seak to boost signals to make important things inteligable (i.e. speach) and use filtering to get rid of sounds that would be annoyuing or distracting when amplified.

Thanks much for the reply, Brian.  Very helpful.

My suggestion would be to see if you can find an EQ curve the audiologist used when they set up your hearing aids, then take the hearing aids out and EQ the master accordingly.I say this because I'm not sure about the effect close proximity will have if using headphones in addition to the likely discomfort involved. You basically have to tune your ears to a flat reference and then tune the headphones for flat EQ if you are critically mixing. Otherwise your ears will fool you about the mix. Headphone mixing also usually requires some kind of calibration like Sonarworks.

Thanks for the reply, Tim.  I need to look into the "process" of fitting for hearing aids.  I assumed that they were just a mic and an amp with maybe some filtering.  I'd be concerned that they might feed back while using headphones.  I like your idea though.  If they could identify which frequencies your ears were rolling off, could they  just boost those freq's?

I've been using Sonarworks for years.  Works good.

Welcome to the club. I use ReSound over-the-ear hearing aids bought at Costco several years ago. Since it's a bother to put them in and take them out all the time, I tend to leave them in when using open-backed headphones that rest lightly on the ears. However, for me it's more comfortable to take them out when using closed back headphones that fit more tightly, especially when I have my glasses on.

I've never done a careful experiment to determine whether the hearing aids actually contribute anything to the sound coming from the headphones so I'm curious too what other people think.

Thanks for your reply.  Does Costco have a hearing department or are these 'off the shelf' hearing aids?

It seems to me that 'over the ear' type of aids would certainly be more uncomfortable when used with glasses and headphones.

  15. Hi All.

I'm not sure where this post should go so please move as needed.

Most of my music related listening is done using closed-back, over-ear headphones.  I wear glasses and have become used them while wearing headphones.  Sooner or later, I'm going to need hearing aids and I'm wondering how this will work.  Anyone who has experienced with this combination, I'd love to hear your comments.

What type of phones & aids are  you using?  What works and what doesn't.  Anything on the subject would be welcomed.

    TIA

  16. I'm going to do a fresh install of CbB in win10, (from Win7).  I seem to remember a discussion about the proper order to install the previous versions, (Sonar, Platinum, etc.), but I can't seem to find it now.  Any advice or direction would be greatly appreciated.  Also, I haven't updated CbB in quite some time, (don't ask).  Is there a way to install the various updates one at a time from my current version to the newest?  I was thinking it might be easier to get a grasp of all the new features that way.

    Thanks for any help.  -Paul
