  1. Since my cover of Hotel California was such a hit 🤣, I thought I'd try another one. This is can hardly be called a classic and it's even covered rather true to the original, so it shouldn't upset too much. Again without Melodyne.

3/3 2019 : New mix using Bandlab mastering, + vocal reverb + bass

Man is it tough to cover this song. Possibly because we have all heard it so many times our ears can hear any little imperfection.

And I heard a couple in the vocal track or something like that.

Me personally, I never had that voice to do cover songs like this.. It's also what lead me to sing my own stuff. I just didn't sound like any of those singers, I sounded like me. So I focused more on trying to find me. I did, but It took like 10 years :D

Good job man, experiment with Melodyne. I don't like to use it on everything but when my ear picks out bad notes, I fix them right there and then.

I know what you mean. It's easier to do your own stuff, because you don't have to compare it

Vocals are OK, which I know is 'damned with faint praise'. You're a bit shaky here and there but mostly it's on pitch. What occurred to me  is that you might be concentrating too hard on hitting the notes, and forgetting to get some feel or passion in there; it's all a bit one-level. Maybe relax a bit and just go for it. (this coming from someone who can't sing at all, so large pinch of salt required..)

I agree completely. I have been practising this song in the original key, but one octave lower, so in this key it's a bit new. I'm going to practise i this key and hope be ok to losen up a bit,

    Hi,

Very interesting take on a stylistic cover of a much loved classic.

I definitely get a mid 80's style electronica vibe from using keys and synths instead of the original instrumentation, and the music seems to work well as a scaled down version.

James had some excellent observations and advice about the vocals in the post above.  I think with a little more practice and a bit more confidence and attitude when you record the vocals, you can definitely take this up to another level.👍

Keep up the good work, my friend!
    Bob

Thanks, Bob. My first cover that I used for singing alon in the car was a bit more like the original, but then I thought about doing it in a more contempoary sound.

Thanks for listening, all. I updated the mix. Heard it on the big speakerand was not pleased. Still not intirerly satisfied, but getting closer.

Brave man ! Not to my taste as it's one of my all time greats but I see where your going with it, I just feel doing a cover should either copy the orig' or do it different with your own take on the hook ... Joe's power lead at the end of this song finishes it in spades and perhaps you could incorporate your interpretation.

    Spak

I think that you're covering it like the original, you'd better ad something like better vocal, better guitar etc. and that's not really going to happen. Me trying to battle that guitar solo, would not end well 😁

As singing practice, a good choice I reckon. I love this song, but no power on earth would make me touch a cover of it. It's a most excellent song, possibly criminally overplayed in the 1970's . . .  You have talent as many do - I just think there are some songs that probably shouldn't be covered. Right? Wrong? Anyway, kudos on your courage and best of luck with it! Big, big balls! Next up, Stairway to Heaven?  :)

    cheers,

    -Tom

I know how many people feel about covers and I particularly remember the reaction to Madonna's "American pie". I never felt the same way at all. People often cover my favorite song and I don't mind that. I can always turn it off and listen to the original. For me I (almost) always enjoy hearing a song in a different way.
I did think about a Beatles cover and I have an idea about arranging Iron Maiden as swing. Should I refrain from doing so ? 😂

Anywasy thanks for listining. Any comments on the vocals? I have really no idea how it sounds to other people. I know I don't much care about hearing my own singing, but I hear that's pretty normal even for big stars, so I don't really know.

  4. I've been doing some covers lately  mostly  for vocal practise, but also to be better at the production part. This is my idea how this song would have sounded if it was released in the 80's. The structure is the way we do it in my choir replacing the guitar solo with another chorus and ending, so that's courtesy my choirleader Lene.
I didn't use Melodyne as it pretty much deafeats the purpose of try to get better at hitting the notes.

Listening to your mix on my Focals.
Comes across well... why I think of Tubular Bells I dont know??
Could see it being used in a documentary or corporate use?

You mean the instrument or the album ? I'm pretty influenced by Mike Oldfield, so that wouldn't suprise me. The bell is actually sampled from the church bell. After I started on the project I found out I had it on video.

    Thanks a lot for listening.

    Hi,

This is a fantastic, modern sounding instrumental!🙂

Excellent composition and arrangement, and the choice of instruments and playing fits perfectly into the clean and wide, nicely textured, fresh sounding mix.

I could easily imagine hearing this in a soundtrack for a cinematic film.

Very nice work, great piece of music!👍

    Best Wishes,
    Bob

Very happy to hear this. Thanks a lot listening.

    Hi soundregion,

I'm sitting here imagining the long winding road up to Hotel Oberland and this instrumental fits the mood perfectly.

    Thanks for sharing.

    Good Job!

Strange. I made sure to try it out before posting so I wouldn't be giving wrong information. I've used Find/Change many times for other purposes and found it always worked. In the past, I've used it to give every note in a drum track a length of either zero or some other small value since, in most cases, the note length for a percussive drum sound is usually irrelevant.

Oh I'm sure it works. I just not smart enough to use that tool.

You can also use 'Find/Change' under 'Process'. For example: Say you want to change all notes on channel 5 to channel 7....

Select the midi you want to change and use 'Find/change'.

A window of many midi parameters opens. Select all notes in the channel range 5 to 5 (don't change anything else). Click OK.

Another window opens. Select all the notes in the channel range 7 to 7. Click OK. All the notes will change to channel 7.

I've just tried this. It works.

I actually tried that and couldn't get it to work.

  9. Interesting video and fitting music. Interesting that we seem to have forgotten the nuclear threat, but all the missiles are still out there. Of course now we have level headed people like Trump and Putin in power......😁

No brainer No2  ...if I had to choose. But I think maybe I agree with Tom ...that said No2 would pass :/ ....

    So no help here ....

This probably shows how much I know about classical musical, as my own favorite was 1. I purchased 8dio Adagietto which also sounded horrible in my ears. I thought I was making progress with what I had, but then I put on some "real" Tchaikowsky and totally lost motivation to continue. Not sure it's possible with VST.

    Fun!

For me, #1 had too mechanical and fake vibrato.

#2 had better vibrato, but unrealistic, non-legato attack

#3 sounds like a french horn.

Therefore, the answer is . . . none of them. Keep looking!  Check out 8dio Adagietto if you have Kontakt. It's on sale now apprently.  Best of luck!

    cheers,

    -Tom

    Another one ?😲
Well it does seem like a reasonable price considering what it cost before.

    I think I prefer Cello 2 @soundregion.

    13 minutes ago, garybrun said:

Out of the three I would say two.
Nr three sounds to much like brass.

If you want to send me the midi files for the cello I dont mind sending you a wave file back as I have quite a few expensive samples.

Surprising to me, as I think it sould more like an accordion. Cello 2 is Amadeus. My preference was Cello 1 which was the one from the Kontakt Factory library.

Thanks for the offer. The work is still in very early stages, though

    20 hours ago, Starise said:

When I mix cello it's usually on the lower strings so I'm probably not the best listener for this. I might try viola instead if the parts are higher. The last take almost sounds like brass to me at the :40 mark. The thing I like about cello are those nice deep harmonics and overtones.

Anyways, good luck! May the best sample win.

You're right about the violin. The finished will have both the violin and Cello, but it was the cello I was curious about. Cello 3 is Studio strings pro.

I would try to stack them for a fuller sound, and more reverb!

And bingo we have a winner.  Thanks for the suggestion.

Wow that poll really worked well didn't it ?🤣

    Thanks for listening Bjørn.
I agree about the fiddle... would love to have one in there too.
Not sure I have ever mixed one though...  200 - 16k if its the same as a violin??

I also wondered about that. There's a fiddle in the kontakt factory library, that I've used in a project to get a nordic folk sound. I always thought it was the same instrument, just played differently, but I'm not really sure. I certainly sound different than a solo violin in a strings collection.

  14. I have been struggling a bit trying to find a decent orchestra. Lately I found myself trying yet another new VST I discovered on @Starise's project. I just don't think I can get it to sound like the demo. I'm working on a project that  was thinking should be a test to how well I can do a "classical piece" .

UPDATE: Structure finished and it will probably need some fine tuning. I'm far for satisfied with the sound as I don't think it sounds like a real orchestra, but I think it's closer than I've been before.
