I wanted to try that once, but I couldn't get my Mac in the microwave.

In that case, you really need to try the new Mac Mini: far smaller, and I hear there's a version that's ready in 1 minute

Dammn with all our "centers " and stuff my windows 8 tablet style strat screen is a keeper , kids computer is under windows 10 , hated it , but said to myself it's just a question of configuration ...but if you say it's gone , it's a shame !

Sorry - my bad... I forgot because either I turned it off when I upgraded many years ago, or it's off by default.

There is a setting to get a full-screen start menu. Don't know if it's exactly like the Windows 8 one, but you can still full-screen the start, and live tiles still work on it.

What the M1 is doing is making use of RAM compression... to eek a bit more out of 16GB.

Interesting... does that mean it's draining CPU cycles to do the compression/decompression instead?

Guyz , is the  welcome screen with all the apps pinned at start is there in windows 10 / 11 ? (when you click windows key)

There is no (full screen) welcome screen anymore. Instead you get something that's a cross between the Windows 7 start menu, and the Windows 8 welcome screen; a resizable panel that you can pin live tiles/app shortcuts to.

But Windows Central has said that the Windows 11 name has been confirmed!!!

I don't doubt that - just saying that previous Windows 10 version names have included Anniversary Update and Creator's Update; Windows 11 sounds arguably better than Windows 10, 21H2, or Windows 10, 22H1, etc depending on when it comes out.

[edit] Forgot to add: I'm with Larry. Sure looks more like an Apple OS than a MS OS!!!

Yes - I think it's the rounded-corner windows. I half expected there to be a red, yellow, and green button in the top left corner.

If windows 11 is true then Microsoft would be going against it's own words saying Windows 10 will be the last edition and just updates going forward.

Apparently, the people who said that have moved on

    https://www.xda-developers.com/windows-11/

It's also speculative right now as to whether Windows 11 is just an update name, like Anniversary Edition (or whatever it was called)

Regarding the 5950x, if you're used to a near dead-silent machine... you're going to work much harder to achieve that with the 5950x vs. the 9900k or 10900k.

Is that because the 5950x gives off more heat, or something to do with the actual layout of motherboards/suitable cooling equipment?

Here's the same Helix Native test running on a 5950x.

    Hey Jim,

Thanks for sharing the test results. I've not been following CPUs in a while - am I right in thinking that the 5950x is an AMD, and that Intels can outperform AMDs in single core performance? (either that, or I'm getting confused/mis-remembering some of your previous posts).

  10. Glad I ordered mine before the stock ran out 😜

I think the problem is probably more to do with TracingArcs' comment - possibly Brexit related. T+S have been really good with customer service in my experience, so I can't see any reason they'd want to affect their reputation. Also, it doesn't make sense that NI would want to 'punish' retailers; by retailers 'selling serials', they're actually helping. The disks would probably be dumped straight away by people who don't want them, and by returning them back to NI, NI have another unit to repackage and sell again - they don't have to go through the resources (time/material) of making another one, they just have to put a new serial card into the box and reseal it. Greener for the environment too.

Sorry, I no longer have an m1. Returned it. Waiting for the new versions. And I also don’t have that software.  I don’t remember the specifics of my testing, but I have kontakt and diva and a bunch of other plug ins. I purposely tested the ram by loading line 20 kontakt instances. Strings, horns, guitars, piano, vocals, battery, session drummer…all ran fine. This was on top of  over a hundred tracks. diva, and a bunch of other plug ins. Also threw a bunch of fx on each track.  Oh and it was 96khz,64 buffer. Uad interface. All silent and barely warm. I finally got it to crack when I also had a video editing program open and a few safari tabs.  It is an impressive machine. Leaves intel and amd in the Stone Age.

The m1 sounds amazing - why would you return a computer that can load an instrument containing 5.26GB (compressed)/13.7GB (uncompressed) sample data (which is the size of the actual sample data, irrespective of the CPU's instruction set), as well as all those other instruments into 8GB system RAM,  and continue running smoothly at low latencies? Sounds like a great DAW; wouldn't it have been better to hold onto it, and then upgrade/trade up when the next version comes out? Can you remember which other instruments (you mentioned strings, horns, guitars, piano, and vocals) you loaded into Kontakt?

Not necessarily. Depends on use, of course and It’s a different architecture.  Can’t apply x86 rules. 16gb is better for future proofing, or video editing.   But I was amazed at how much you can do with 8gb. I had to really create insane projects and push it in ways I wouldn’t normally.  Watch the videos. It’s been out for 7 months now. Lots of info out there already.

So in your opinion, do you think you could comfortably run a project that uses Spitfire Audio's BBCSO Core/Pro on an M1 mac with 8GB RAM?

  13. I know everything is subjective with guitar tone, but how do you like this one Larry? I get the feeling it was one of the best amp sims around at one point, but has it stood the test of time with some of the newer products (e.g. Amplitube 5, TH-U, Bias 2, etc)?

I did what treesha suggeste3d and it appears to have worked. However, when I went to install another lib and tried to tell NA to install it to the directory I want, it refused to do it, despite following the help in the error message link.

Kontakt Player libraries that you download from within Native Access will install into the Content location, as set in the Native Access preferences. If you want to relocate them, you can do so after they've downloaded. Just remember to re-run NA and 'repair' the libraries, pointing to the new location.

    • Thanks 1
  15. What treesha said sounds about right. Once it has been 'repaired' in Native Access it should be available in either the standalone, or the plugin version. Also, when moving the folders around, probably a good idea to not rename the instrument's parent folder - I've tried renaming some folders before and NA has refused to find it.
