  1. I really have never used Melodyne for anything other than converting a real Bass track into midi.

A month or so ago I thought I'd bring everything on my main DAW up to date. There was an update for Melodyne as well.

Today was the first time I had needed to convert a Bass track since before the updates.

The Bass track had 3 parts due to punching in.

The first segment which was more than 1/3 of the song converted over no problem. But, the second clip just froze up at the "rendering audio" point and the wheel went round and round forever. I opened Task manager and it showed that Cakewalk was not responding,  So I closed it and tried again. I had saved like I always do after any major change so my first conversion was fine.  This time the second part worked but when I tried the 3 clip everything froze again. I hadn't saved thinking this was all working now. So back to task manager and re open project.  Now no matter what I couldn't get the 2nd or 3rd clips to render, Odd?  CPU was showing no action.

I copied the folder to my back up drive , opened the song on my old W7 beater which is way out of date and the parts converted without issue. So I got what I wanted.

So is this the "new" version of Melodyne not working well with Cakewalk??

  2. I'm glad this topic was brought up and even happier to see we have the attention of Noel.

Something different needs to happen- as here I am, a so called experienced long time user, and for the world I can never get the GUI to stay the way I want it from project to project without some minor adjustments once the project is open.  No big deal, but between Lens and Screenset I remain baffled as which one to use.

I stopped using Screensets when Lenses came along and for the life of me I couldn't sort out what the difference was? I even read the documents!  It seemed to me Lenses did more of what I wanted.  And if I dared to open a screenset as I could not go back to my Lens unless I opened another lens and re opened the original. So I have simply avoided screensets since.  It left me pondering why they still exist. I have since removed that module from my task bar.

But Lens's have a glitch that I always meant to ask about so I will take this opportunity.

I have a huge project involving 65 or so songs my partner and I are working on this winter. With 65 songs it's real nice that each project would open and look the same, right.    I'm working with 2 monitors but he's on my laptop with only 1 screen. I opened the projects on the Laptop and even though I tried setting a Lens up for the one screen  they all open with the Console,  PVR  and any multi docks full screen.  So I have to minimize to the dock and save.  This for all 65 projects,,, geezers.

Then the other glitch is the browser window won't stay minimized. With one monitor you need all the screen you can get for tracking. The workaround was to slide it almost out of view. But it would be nice to just use the double arrows and keep it minimized. Possibly a Sceenset would solve these issues but I'm reluctant to waste time re learning that system again. At the time it was quicker just to do it the hard way...

  3. Funny Craig pointed it out and beat me too it. And yep I have used that dialog I think since Sonar 6?   And for sure it was because of my attempts at recording my Roland GR 50 to make bass parts. It also comes in handy with my Yamaha DTX drums as the hi hat pedal is glitchy.

Those pesky hidden notes are always an issue. I get them a lot when I create a midi track from a real bass track with Melodyne.  For me the dead giveaway is  when a note does not sound or cuts out prematurely.  So I grab the dead note and move it up or down to reveal the hidden note.  Zooming in helps if they are that small.

In case you missed it, Johnny, it was meant as a joke.🙃

Yes, my bad, I didn't fully read everything and all I saw was my re-posting screenshot and that comment.  Sorry all.

But seriously this is a huge issue if a forum can be hacked as some of us have our  Sonar products linked to the forum log on.

Good to see they jumped on it.. all is well,,nothing to see here folks...move along...

  5. It's just "standard practice" to wire any serious studio with high quality cables. Even unbalanced cables will benefit in noise rejection if they are of the higher quality and have proper shielding.   There's not much point in using balanced cables when the connections are unbalanced. Example an audio interface or powered speakers with RCA jacks are clearly not balanced.  And guitar and most hardware synths are never balanced.

RF interference  is not an normally an issue if the cable runs are short. I have all lengths of cables from 3" to 6' just for this reason. I use no more than needed to make my connections. So always start out with the best cabling in your studio. And add to that proper power conditioning for the A/C ( Mains in your speak) . I use a Furman.

The noise you describe is possibly like the one I will get when I use a wireless mouse.

I will only hook up my wireless keyboard and mouse when I need remote control while tracking vocals. Otherwise I have eliminated all wireless devices from my studio space.  Even my phone is hardwired.

And the ferrite chokes are also a great idea especially on you USB cables. There was a thread a few days ago and that person has a Scarlett 2i4 which use buss power. ( EDIT_ I see Mark posted a link above while I was posting) They are documented as making the noise you describe and the ferrite choke is reported to solve that issue. .

I have a few A/C power cables that have those chokes on them too.

  6. Part 4 of my tutorials explains most of what you need to know about the buss pane. Including how to find it if it is not showing.

    http://www.cactusmusic.ca/tutorial-videos

Generally they have supplied a few templates for newbies to get started with but most long time users simply make our own templates and use those so we rarely need to do this.

There's one case for me as I often OPEN a midi file and those projects won't have any busses.  Takes 2 seconds to add them so nothing to gripe about really.

Both project templates and track templates will populate your buss pane.  Example when I insert my "Guitar"  audio track template, it inserts a track set up to record that guitar as well as inserting a Guitar Buss .

Where is this from?  Is this what some are saying?  Because the resolution is so bad I cannot see which thread this is from but I most certainly did not post the picture shown?  If this is a sign of bad security here I'm afraid I'm not about to hang around and get abuse for having someone change my posts.

  8. Always good to have top quality cables.

    My cable story was this;

I ran a music store for 12 years.  One day a guy came in and was looking to buy a new Bass as he said his sounded muddy.
I plugged it in using my amp and cable and it sounded fine... he goes what did you do? I looked in his case and he had this Curly cable,,, we hooked that up and his bass was real real muddy. I didn't sell him a $300 bass but I did sell him a $30 cable. The ones I sold and I still have in my own collection were all Beldon wire with Switchcraft ends made by Cabletech ( now called Radial) .  25 years and counting.

  9. These stories put me in mind of my old Fender Bassman that had a 2 prong plug.  As most of you will remember how "safe" those were.  But you usually knew when you had to flip the reverse switch as you most always heard a hum. Otherwise you would be blown across the room when you touched your mike with your lips! But one of the benefits was if I turned the amp up it picked up AM radio and I used to listen to it in my room that way.

The other thoughts on this topic is how many people these days are freaked out about RF emissions from Smart meters and cell towers. They talk like this is some sort of new heath issue. Most of those old radio towers blasted out a lot more RF energy than a cell tower.  And there also was all the TV station towers which are now gone.

Greg- The ferrite choke worked for my friend who had the hum in his 2i4. I hope it works for you.  All my USB audio gear now have those type of USB cables. They are a good idea. I even have power supplies ( wall Warts) that came with a choke on the low voltage side. It's a bad on Focusrite's part that they don't include one of these cables as it would seem the right thing to do.

  10. I missed the post above mine,

If this is an older home that was not originally wired with a ground circuit and all they did was upgrade the panel.  Then if they did not upgrade the wiring you will need to at least run a grounded wire directly to the new panel either with a appropriate extension cord or somehow install at least that one circuit.

Hopefully they would have properly grounded the new panel and supplied you with at least one grounded outlet. A GFI is pointless if it is not grounded.

You can test outlets with one of these inexpensive testers.  I never go anywhere without mine.

  11. Ya, it's a better system for quick posts of certain things,  but  screenshots are impossible to see the details or read dialog boxes.

The only thing I can recommend is to change the template and keep it basic. Then try adding fancy stuff until it goes sideways. Then you'll know what VST is crashing Cakewalk.

Does it crash if you just insert that VST by it self into a blank project"  IS it a 32 bit VST?

    Thanks!   And i'm using a Scarlett 2i4

This- Those are USB buss powered and there have been a few threads as well as I helped a friend with this issue once. The hum is probably coming over the USB power so the best solution is to use a USB cable with a Ferrite choke.  It's one of the reasons I don't recommend interfaces that ONLY have USB power.  It's better if they offer the option of a proper power supply. The other issue they can have is a starved 48 volt phantom power for some LDC mikes.

  13. Not sure if it matters but you should always increase your midi buffer size from the default to something 2x or 4x bigger. Mines set at 1000.

And what Jonesey said is what happens to me.  Grab the note in PVR and pull it up or down to reveal a hidden dupe.  They either stick or cut out.

Try not to use ASIO4ALL if you can help it.  It ain't the greatest.  Better to buy a cheap USB interface (if you can afford it) and use it's native drivers than using your onboard sound chip with ASIO4ALL,    Mackie Big Knob series is inexpensive, sounds fine and doubles as a speaker controller right on your desk.

Sorry but have you used asio4all in the last few years?  It actually good software now and works well for most on board sound cards. I used it for a  over year on this very laptop I'm typing on. I had it set up at work to mess around with Home Studio and midi files. I would also play with larger projects that had audio as well..   And as a test I then hooked up my Scarlette 6i6 and had no issues using that and it's proper driver.

You can also use WASAPI mode for on board audio without issue unless your overdubbing new audio tracks. You will need to adjust your timing offset.

    I'll try remove the card.

Behringer drivers are from 2009. OMG.

Ya, That's what I was saying,, they are working just fine on W7  but it's worth a shot to see if they work under W10.

If it does not work then you will have no choice but to use your on board sound chip..

    It's like this:

Real ASIO USB audio interface = $ 100- $ infinity

Behringers UCA series= $25-$30 ,, ( I got mine free with a $200 Behringer mixerwhich blew up after 1 year)

On Board sound = $ Free  (but probably that part cost $4.)

You can "get by" with on board under WASAPI ( or asio4all)  but you will need to perform a loopback test like I did to make sure you have proper sync between overdubbed tracks.

And myself I'm not sure how in the world one would plug a SM 58 into that little jack :0

  16. back to the OP.

I recommend you physically remove the card, I had to. Disable and uninstall everything that say's creative.

Download the ASIO Behringer driver and follow instructions.  Only issue is the driver was made for W7 which is what I'm using successfully. You may have different results but it's worth the few minutes to try it. Many W7 drivers work fine under W10.

  17. Hey, thanks for that link, cool. I just downloaded and will test on my beater Sony laptop.

Behringer used to provide their own official ASIO drivers for this, before they decided to force you to use ASIO4ALL.

They still work on Windows 10, and perform much better than ASIO4ALL.

Behringer have since removed them from their website, but you can download them here: http://www.123dj.com/audio/mp3s/uca222.html

I find this interesting in the notes..

    3. IMPORTANT NOTES:
    -------------------
-> Driver will be installed ONLY on USB port where your hardware is connected while installation!

-> After installation ALL other audio drivers are blocked on this USB port!

-> For using different drivers: Connect your USB audio hardware to a different USB port.

-> Alternative drivers which work fine with the named hardware products:
Vista + Windows 7: ASIO4ALL (see providers homepage)

OK so all seems to work fine. Had an issue with sharing drivers. Win Amp for some reason wanted WDM  and I had to re boot computer to get it to play. But I re opened Cakewalk and projects are playing using ASIO. SO this makes the old Laptop more useful to me now.  The Behringer ( mine is a UCA 200)  was gather dust.

With a small mixer I will have a 100%  usable ASIO system.

And check this out, rock solid loopback timing. And if I had a better computer hooked up you can set the buffers pretty low and get good RTL.

  18. I know this doesn't answer your question, but I find Cakewalk next to useless for working with video. The video feature is a poorly built afterthought and they should do everyone a favour and remove it.

I bought Vegas Movie Studio Platinium 14 on sale for $34 and it's amazing. It even supports most of my Cakewalk plug ins. I can put the BT Brickwall on the audio track.  I guess there's an upgrade now to Vegas 16, but 14 is half the price.

    https://www.amazon.ca/VEGAS-Movie-Studio-14-Platinum/dp/B01NBYOMJD/ref=asc_df_B01NBYOMJD/?tag=googleshopc0c-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=292962816383&hvpos=1o4&hvnetw=g&hvrand=1642523475381333915&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1001901&hvtargid=pla-448691710786&psc=1

I'm using on board graphics without too much of an issue but if you really get into video editing it's just like audio and a dedicated card is a must.

    OK. I'm testing with a Behringer UCA222.

Works better for a longer time,  but Cakewalk still crush at one moment.

    Like a crack-pop in a eternal loop.

I have one of those that came with a Behringer Mixer. They use USB Codex.  So not ASIO, A very small step up from using the 1/8" mini jack. Nothing wrong with the device. I have used mine for live performance playback for years. Always worked. But if your overdubbing audio it will be out of sync. You will need to adjust your timing offset in preferences.  You can see by my loopback test that it performs better using it's generic driver than in WASAPI mode.

I agree with Krupa, you will need to completely get rid of all traces of the Creative driver. In my case I had to re install W7 to clean my system. Otherwise even if you do get a proper interlace the Creative driver will screw things up.

  20. Yes the OP's issue for sure will most likely be solved with using a proper ASIO audio interface.  An Audio interface is the heart of any DAW system.  Creative makes cards for Gaming, not DAW's.

You can get buy with WASAPI and on board sound chips for doing some basic editing, I do this from time to time, But projects with a lot of VST's often stutter for me in that mode.  I had to pull my old Audigy II PCI card from my office computer when I upgraded to W10. It worked fine under W7. I now use a even older PCI card made by Card Deluxe, but they had written W10 drivers which is amazing since the card was made in 2004.  It's only duty is play music and watch movies but it's using ASIO drivers and quite capable with Sonar.

  21. Were's CJ when we need him? He'll tell you to take an elevator to the top floor of the tallest building in town and toss the Audigy card off!

I speak from personal experiance... I wasted a year trying to get one to work.  They just have terrible drivers, thats all.

I just opened X3e on my W10 computer and other than it's missing a lot of stuff I now use, it works just fine. But I am using a proper ASIO audio interface so of course it will. My guess is a W10 update really trashed your Creative drivers.
