  1. Some of the figures from above are humorous... but way off base. I sent a 9+k machine out a few weeks back... and margin was not 2k. Turnabout is fair play. So, what do "Monkey" and "Carl" do for a living... and what do they get paid? Of course, it will be easy for me to say their services are not worth it... and both are overpaid. I could certainly do it myself for a lot less. Total waste of money. I think you're grossly over-paid... and I'll tell you what I think you should make. Sound ridiculous? It is...

  2. Ok , disclosure, I use to score to picture in Sonar non stop for like 25 years. When Sonar tanked I jumped on the Cubase band wagon and I do like my Cubase a lot. I still like to compose in CbB just because of familiarity, but I dreaded when the video editor started sending me edited versions and I had to cut my old, approved music cues to the new picture. It could very easily turn into a nightmare if you where not on top of your game. BUT NOW, with the ripple edit and new(ish) Tempo Track...not a problem. My first revised cut went smoothly. No need to jump to the other DAW . just want to say THANKS to the Bakers! (again). Even my coffee this morning tastes better. And i do think it's due to the improvements n CbB

  12. A college professor of mine once told me that if you care about a business you thought about buying from but didn't, tell them why you didn't buy from them. As the years went on and I became a business strategist and, now, a business owner, I wanted to do just that. First, this piano library sounds very nice. I might have purchased it, if it were available as a KONTAKT library. Unfortunately, I am through with purchasing sample libraries housed in a small developer's homemade plugins. It's too much work to install, learn and maintain another plugin that easily could have been made as a sample library usable for a popular sample format, like KONTAKT. Buying software from a small sample developer -- often a one or two person business, sometimes, a side business -- has proven to be too much effort for the end result. IMO, small sample developers should focus on making a great, well coded sample libraries -- doing that is challenging enough for a small operation. Instead, when devs go down the path of attempting to code their own sample player, they are competition with well researched, designed, coded and tested apps, like KONTAKT that were developed by teams that include professionals with sampling, programming, testing, user interface design and usability expertise. Expecting a single small developer with one to three employees to have all of these skills PLUS handle customer support is rarely realistic. Plus, the reality is, for those who have invested in KONTAKT or another sampler, the idea of having to add a different plugin that requires a new learning curve and maintenance is a burden I don't want to really want to deal with. I literally own hundreds of sample libraries and hundreds of plugins, I don't want more plugins to learn and maintain for every new sample library. MNTRA was, for me, the straw that broke the camel's back. The sounds are really nice and when the plugin works, the user experience is poor -- but some of the ideas are really clever. It has all sorts of problems that many users have reported in various forums. For me, that includes a library that doesn't even play at all. The developer contacted me several days after my support ticket to tell me that he was super busy and would get back to me in a week, but never got back to me. I eventually gave up and moved on and would absolutely never purchase from that developer again -- unless he started making sample libraries in a format I used, like for KONTAKT. I'm very empathetic to small developers and have provided many with free business advice in past years, but when you make the leap to paid software, you have an ethical obligation to provide a good product and good support; but many small devs get in over their head. Now, I realize that it's inevitable that some people will read this and disagree with me. That's fine. Some of you don't have KONTAKT and aren't invested in another sampler ecosystem. Understood. The developer could have made this for another sampler format, like Decent, UVI or in the open source SFZ format and then you would not have to install, learn and maintain a new plugin for each sample library.

  14. This issue is starting to come up more often here. It seems users are trying to use Gaming and Podcasting input and output devices that are not designed for use with Audio DAW's like Cakewalk. These devices use plug and Play Windows drivers and do not support WASAPI drivers. The best solution is to purchase a proper audio interface and a proper XLR microphone. Second solution is only use your computers on board audio system which will support WASAPI. You use the jacks on your computer to access the audio system. Trying to use generic USB audio devices or Bluetooth will not go well, ever.

  20. MME is the worst driver model you can use, and is really there as a last resort. What audio interface do you have? WASAPI Shared should work with most things, but if it's a proper interface, then you'd use the official ASIO drivers for it.

  21. I was just playing with the 360 amp plugin last night. I really enjoy the clean sounds that the Vermillion amp A has. I also demo'd the Matchlock amp too and really enjoyed the clean on it. Was extremely impressed with the two chorus units I tried. The Ensemble and the Dimension, both of these are excellent sounding and very tweakable. They knocked those out the park, seriously. After playing with them for a couple of hours last night I was wondering today if they have a sale... and look what happens! Thanks MM. : )

  24. I love SP2016 for an amazing and natural sounding reverb. It took a couple of sessions to really get it's sound, quite possibly because I'd been testing out their Blackhole reverb a lot at the time which can be crazy lush and over the top, but I reach for SP2016 a lot now. Even more than Vintage Verb lately, but they are quite different and hard to compare, so they both have a place. All 3 are great reverbs and so different that I wouldn't want to be without any of them now 🙂

  25. Hi Jason, I just wanted to drop a huge kudos to you guys for something seemingly trivial, yet impressive. I do not come into the forums as much these days, but was just going through emails and got one directly from Yao about the Erhu release. It has been a couple years or more now that I had mentioned sampling the Erhu after I spent some time with a gentleman in a park in Beijing. I am not sure if the email was a coincidence (I have a truckload of filters to keep my inbox clean), but that email went straight to my inbox, so I was sitting here looking at that and thinking, "Huh, ain't that something?" Not only did you make the library but let me know. THAT is just incredibly impressive! Just in case this is a coincidence, take credit for it. I love you guys anyway 🙂.

  31. Since I happen to be on this thread this evening, I am happy to report that this week I ordered Jim's Pro Studio DAW tricked up with Jim's recommended i9-12900k chip, 32GB RAM, and one of dem der newfangled 1 TB M2 SSD drives for sample libraries, along with a few other extras. I found out about Jim's business through this site, looked at all his "Tower" computer family on his web site and decided on the Platinum Studio. Sent Jim an email with a couple questions and he responded within an hour with complete answers to my questions as well as suggesting to call him to discuss. I did so, and Jim talked me down from that higher priced model based on his understanding of my needs. We had a very informative (for me) conversation and I felt very comfortable with Jim's knowledge and guidance to entrust him to build my dream music machine. As an older retiree, long-time keyboardist/music hobbyist, and very long-time (25+ yrs) Cakewak user, I believe I will be getting a perfect PC to pursue my ongoing study of vocal recording and music production and being able to use some of the CPU-intensive applications (Izotope Nectar3, Ozone9, RX8) , Sampletank4, and IKMultimedia products & plugins that I already own (without having to do work-arounds!) and can now look seriously at other products that I couldn't run on my 11 yr old PC. I am sooo looking forward to being able to update my forum signature lines with my brand spankin' new music computer in September. Then going through the dreaded process of reloading my software products, plugins, instruments, etc onto the new machine. Hopefully I will have the fortitude to archive or delete many of the products I've acquired over the last 20 yrs, and skinny my rig down to the ones I really use, like a couple posters here have done.

  33. Can't agree more with the comments (save Mr. Ewing). You are not just paying for parts but time, knowledge, and service. Jim is the whole package and is not only willing, but absolutely does go above and beyond the extra mile! Business? Yes, but also a man of integrity, character, and patience. Case in point was the most recent purchase for a church in rural Kansas with an unhappy pastor. Jim shows up after online troubleshooting a few days later (drove himself) with parts in hand to rebuild if necessary. Turns out, the youth pastor had prematurely updated the projection software with the latest and greatest which was what was causing the problems. Jim politely, professionally, and without complaint set things right with the world, the computer, and the staff. Love you man, and you really don't need to bother explaining yourself. Thanks for all you do, wish I could afford to buy personally again! Not that I need it, you're build is still going strong.

  34. That's a very disrespectful thing to say about someone who has been a very helpful long-time forum member here, and has been building custom DAWs for music professionals for decades. You get what you pay for. Jim has actual real advice and support to offer DAW users based on many, many years of real experience. Not all musicians have the time or inclination to build their own. Did you happen to miss the testimonials from the other users in this thread, or just wake up grumpy today?

  35. Holy bad advice, batman. Win10 x64 Pro licenses that are sold for $20... are not usually legit. Legit OEM copies typically sell for $150. A High-School "gamer" doesn't know the first thing about building/configuring a DAW. Let's say you have a 10900k based machine... and you're running a Thunderbolt audio interface. Tell me which BIOS parameters need to be tweaked (and to what settings) for audio to play clean? Do those same settings apply to a 12th gen 12900k? I can buy guitar parts and assemble a guitar for much less than a US PRS or Suhr. At the end of that assembly, the guitar will function. Will it play like a PRS or Suhr? No way. Does that make PRS or Suhr grossly overpriced? Only if you don't value the quality and attention to detail.

  37. Watched a documentary last night about The Who's management team, "Lambert and Stamp", from 2014. Lots of funny stories, especially how the 2 men didn't know how to do any of that stuff but did it anyway! Hey. let's make a movie! Hey, let's manage a band! Hey, let's start a record label! Why don't we buy a movie studio? When Daltrey and Moon had a particularly vicious fight and Kit Lambert persuaded Roger to stop hitting Keith anymore. "It was hell", Roger said. For 3 years, Keith took every opportunity to push Daltrey's buttons to try to make him lose his temper.

  41. "And ya - it's 2022. Maybe in 2005 you needed someone to help you build a system, because so many parts had compatibility issues. Literal children can build high end systems today. Shit, pcpartpicker will hold your hand and tell you exactly what you need and automatically flag problems in your build. Building a DAW system today is child's play. The only thing that might be a challenge for some is delidding or pasting the CPU. But you don't need to pay a $2000 premium on a $3000 machine for the service. People charging those premiums are just straight up assholes - I don't care how much charm and salesmanship they use to get people to overpay. That applies to Apple or small businesses." This very specifically defines the difference between an amateur and a professional. Some of us prefer the professional......... Because - you know IT'S PROFESSIONAL. I have the choice between a 129.00 interface and a 3000.00 interface. I choose the 3000.00 interface. It doesn't make it a rip off ! I chose it for my reasons. also - Hosing around the internet does not make a person smart, savey, on top of it ...or whatever. It might just mean you read about someone who is actually professional - and think you know better.

  43. You bring up some very good points in the subsequent statements after this. I'll do my best to answer this one. I look at my DAW probably the same way a lot of people look at an electric car, and why they hesitate to buy one. They don't wan to ever be in a position where they are low on charge and nowhere near a charging station. I look at what I might get into, because sometimes you just never know. I have started piano parts and branched them into something way more elaborate, or on the flip side, I might just throw the whole thing away and do something else. I can be very fickle that way. What often happens is I make something I think has potential, then after listening to it again I junk it or put it on the back burner. I can only stand so much orchestral stuff, so if I just got that desire taken care of I might go to a light guitar thing next. I would go insane only working fake orchestras all the time. I would also go nuts working small pop/rock things all the time. I don't feed on too much of any one thing for too long. This is a hobby and no one has offered me any money to make anything, so I don't tend to get very hung about any of it. I was on a Celtic kick for quite awhile. I also play what you might call religious music, but sometimes I don't want anything to do with any of that and might put some jazz together. I still like the feel of the Celtic stuff I sometimes come up with and that is usually always low track counts because they are simple arrangements in terms of mixing. And I hate to say this, but I have some serious things going on in my life right now and just haven't had the time to sit down and do any long term anything. If I do anything I am looking at doing it pretty fast. Not that I rush it. This is where mixing/mastering skills can save a lot of time. Back in the day I would spend an entire Saturday putzing with one song and STILL would not be happy with the end result. Now I can make something happen pretty quickly if I have a direction. ....to answer your question, my computer needs are very minimal and if I am tracking a vsti drum kit, I will most often rely primarily on the mixer that comes with the kit. There was a time when I might have mixed 24 tracks of drums sent from various drum vsts into Cakewalk. I can usually get a pretty good drum sound using the factory GUI and plugins. I don't have tons of vocal takes. The vocal either works or it doesn't and should not need more than one or two passes. I spend a lot of time sometimes mixing the bass to sit right.None of that really presses my cpu. I have a few real cpu hungry reverbs. Even so, using only one or two on a dedicated buss isn't a huge hit. I guess I mostly want to be covered for those "what if" moments. What if I decide to use a few different heavy sample libraries? I want to be able to do that and not worry. So I am more thinking of life expectancy for my present system and then covering myself for "what ifs". My present setup with the old 5820K overclocked almost never breaks a sweat, so I can't really justify an upgrade if it were only based on what I'm doing now. Probably most new computer upgrades/purchases are more based on fear than performance needs. I mean, I know I can't indefinitely keep winging it on this system so I try to think ahead some to cover myself for the future. I guess this isn't really fear. It's more just concern and planning. If my system tanks , then I will just be moving a lot sooner than I expected to move. The problem with computers from the last 10 years is if you treat them right they just won't die on the Intel end.
