I've been complaining and ranting a lot on here with every problem I encounter but while there are many good things I like about Cakewalk, one thing I would like to mention is how great this support forum is!!! Man, it is so nice to know that when you post a problem, there are answers and great help not long after. Thank you guys!7 points

I'm definitely looking for something specific. Problem is, I need to wait on Larry to tell me what it is tomorrow!6 points

I just discovered this company today and put a very quick livestream together to take a listen. It is a very nice Upright Piano sample library for HALion, HALionSonic and the FREE HalionSonic SE player. Take a look: http://sonicatoms.com/novel-piano/3 points

Watched part of this(about15-20 minutes of part 1), and noted several items where they are not exactly being forthright. This is their comparison of COVID-19 to the flu, that confining health people to their homes has never happened before and the status of Sweden and Norway. He stated COVID-19 is very much like the flu and the death rate is small (lots of cases, small number of deaths). He emphasized that flu deaths in 2017 were at about 45-50K in the US. As of this morning (April 26 at 7:31 am) John Hopkins University COVID-19 dashboard (https://gisanddata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/opsdashboard/index.html#/bda7594740fd40299423467b48e9ecf6) is reporting 53,934 deaths in the US. This is since they first starting tracking on January 21, 2020. If we extrapolate the COVID-19 deaths from the first three months for an entire year (multiply the first 3 month totals by 4), we find a projected yearly death total of 215,736. That would make COVID-19 the third leading cause of death in the US, following heart disease (647,457) and cancer (599,108) (https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/fastats/leading-causes-of-death.htm). Influenza is at number 8 (55,672 in 2017) which COVID-19 will soon pass. COVID-19 is not influenza. He also talked about Sweden which has not done any type of lock down and their case rate. A review of their daily reported cases on the John Hopkins site is showing that the trend for daily number of cases in Sweden is still rising (see below) This is significantly different from what we are seeing in Norway where the trend of daily cases is on the decline (see below). So we won't really know the difference between Sweden and Norway as it is simply too soon to tell. Could Norway see a spike? It's possible. Could Sweden flatten out after today? It may happen. The fact is we don't know yet. This is also the issue with the models being used. Any model makes assumptions. And in the early days of COVID-19 we knew even far less than we know today. As we get more data we can make better decisions and better models. It doesn't mean anybody did anything wrong. It does mean that we are learning. He also said that we have never before locked down society like we are doing today. That is not true either. If you research the Spanish Flu pandemic in 1918 you will see they did the exact same type of social distancing and lock downs. And they struggled with the same issues of reopening society. Baltimore did it too soon and the second wave death toll was far worse than the initial (https://www.baltimoresun.com/opinion/editorial/bs-ed-0319-1918-flu-baltimore-20200318-cu7jhknfczekfezf5kuk5g7d5q-story.html and https://www.influenzaarchive.org/cities/city-baltimore.html) Now, there is a lot of what he stated that is true. There is much to be said about the level of lock down that has occurred in the US and elsewhere. There is much truth in that people with other healthcare conditions are not being seen and that is worrisome. The extended economic shutdown is causing negative health consequences among a number of people and that should not be ignored. However, I think he was way off base trying to compare it to the flu. And its not just me. There were two recent studies that were released that compared COVID-19 to the flu, and both studies have been called into question (https://arstechnica.com/science/2020/04/experts-demolish-studies-suggesting-covid-19-is-no-worse-than-flu/). I think the comparison between Sweden and Norway is still playing out and that we need to watch what happens in both countries. To say this has never happened before is disingenuous.3 points

Same here, I went shopping about 6 weeks ago and must have tried out about 35 guitars. After I finished I thought about the Covid-19 thing. What if others had been playing those guitars with the disease. I'm going again soon but will take hand sanitizer next time. I was looking at Artcore or Epiphone but tried others as well including the more expensive Gibson. At the end of the day for me, I was most impressed with the Gretsch models at least as far as playability and sound. I wasn't expecting that as I had never tried them. I want one like this but in a Gretsch model:3 points

Folks, you can believe what you want. Has everyone really forgotten what happened in Italy and Spain just a month ago? But if it is the flu, I don't recall any point in a past flu season where mass graves were being dug all around the world. https://www.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-covid-19-victims-bodies-burials-morgues-cemeteries-photos-2020-4 https://www.bbc.com/news/health-52031539 https://theconversation.com/overloaded-morgues-mass-graves-and-infectious-remains-how-forensic-pathologists-handle-the-coronavirus-dead-1352752 points

Not sure if these have been mentioned already, but Noctua do some fans that are really quiet. Their choice of colours may be subjective, but I would imagine someone would typically spend more time looking at the music they're making, rather than their PC case. https://noctua.at/en/products/fan2 points

Screensets are only applicable to that project. Open a different project and they are gone. Screensets are meant to be a quick-fix. You find you are swapping back and forth between 2 views while doing a particular task? And in 30 minutes when you are finished with that task the views become redundant? Use screensets. To save a screenset switch to another one. So, select Screenset 1. Set up your view. Click Screenset 2. Screenset 1 gets saved. Set up Screenset 2. Select Screenset 1. Screenset 2 gets saved. Now you can switch back and forth between the 2 views to your heart's content. And when you have finished that task you will never use those screensets again. Like strangers you bump into at the pub. While chatting you remember their names and which one has just taken his fog to the vet. The moment you walk out the door on your way home you forget them. You will never see them again. Screensets. But... While tracking do you ALWAYS want the Track Inspector closed, the Browser open? Define a Workspace called Tracking that is set up that way. Workspaces apply to all projects. Define Workspaces for Recording, Tracking, Mixing, Automating, Mastering. Set them up the way you like things to look. Then they are always there for you, with every project that you work on. Like old Fred and John that you join up with every Thursday night at the pub. Every Thursday you go through the same greeting rituals, the same taking turns in paying for rounds, play the same 3 games of darts. Workspaces. While with Fred and john you might start chatting to some guy who is in town for 3 days on a business trip. The 3 of you chat to him, he plays a game of darts with you. But after that you never see him again. He is a Screenshot. But next Thursday Fred and John will be there, same as usual, because they are Workspaces. And some other guy in town for the night joins you for the evening. But gone tomorrow. He was just a Screenshot.2 points

For what it's worth, I have an Ibanez AS153. Amazing guitar, incredibly versatile, flawlessly made. Might change the pickups one day but stock they're more than decent. The cheaper varieties are also well built and great value.2 points

Arrangement Preview will not be sample accurate - that's why its called preview. It will improve though if you run at low latency. Can you verify that it improves? Depending on project load seeking to far apart sections may cause small discontinuities. Crossfades won't solve all problems. In general arranger is a tool for editing, experimentation and composition but before getting ready for production you typically need to render it and do some clean up.2 points

I've been going the hardware route lately. I'm now up to 2x UA-610s, 2x KT2As and 2x KT76s. I ordered some upgrades for my drum mics. 1 Earthworks snare mic as an alternative to the top SM57 (keeping the bottom SM57 in place), and one D12 Kick drum mic as an alternative to the D112 bullet kick drum mic. I ordered an extra SM57 so that I can mic a guitar amp with an ordered Wilkinison Audio Fredman mic holder. I'm considering building a guitar amp isolation box for my Line 6 Spider IV 75 and maybe picking up a Vox low wattage combo amp that could fit in the same isolation box as an alternative to the Line 6.2 points

Me I'm shopping for a backup singers vst library. There's actually hardly any out there. Not a choir library, but backup singers like in a blues band. I've found just two worth mentioning; Vintage Vocals by Big Fish Audio which is a few years old I think, and EastWest Hollywood Backup Singers which was released this year. Checking them both out on Tube it's clear that VV--a kontakt instrument--is severely limited compared to HBS which is its own vst and has much more control and features. VV is $150 on sale http://www3.bigfishaudio.com/email_images/vintagevocalsrelease18/bigfishaudiovintagevocalsvintagebundlerelease30618.html and HBS is $134.98 w/ Spring2020 code here https://www.audiodeluxe.com/products/virtual-instruments/eastwest-hollywood-backup-singers Normally HBS is $399 I guess but folks is poor right now though maybe that's still an intro price idk. I'll probably get that as it's newer, sounds good near as I can tell and you can always grime them up w/ saturation etc plus it has a word builder. What are you guys shopping for or are you just biting on whatever King Lar posts like I be doing?1 point

I posted this last year, but could be interesting for new members and those who want to upgrade to Native Instruments Kontakt full version. Jay Maas Signature Series Drums Lite Edition released by Room Sound is a free acoustic drum kit sample library for Kontakt Player. It contains seven kit pieces from the full version of the product which is $89, but occasionally on sale. With the Lite Edition you are also entitled to the Kontakt full version crossgrade. https://www.roomsound.com/products/jaymaas/#marker61 point

Here is another video on using MSL with a midi controller. It shows how you can use it by sending midi notes to MSL, although it could also be done with midi CCs. I hope you find this useful.1 point

I would like to be able to access midi automation lanes on an instrument track, instead of having to split it into audio and MIDI, and then re-merging the two tracks once I am done writing the automation. It would be so much faster than having to go into PRV and opening the MIDI automation pane, plus you get to draw smooth curves of MIDI CC that won't be baked into the track as discrete MIDI CC values, but stored as vector curves..1 point

Hi guys, I just got this today and it sounds really good! ... I got it for $35USD at pluginboutique using the code 9ntx9xjc. Thanks Larry and Lemar Sain! The full installer file is around 60MB, which something is very desirable in this age of massive plugin collections. I always keep copies of my plugins and sample libraries on 2 external hard drives and it takes long time to download the files from the developer's website, and then transferring them to the external hard drives. Also, in the rare event when the files get lost or damage I will have to repeat that process again, which is something I don't want to do. That's why small file size plugins and sample libraries perfect for me.1 point

A separate samples drive is useful, but not strictly necessary if you have space available on your main drive. An external SATA SSD will be less beneficial than an internal m.2 NVME type in terms of performance. If your PC is a desktop, you should look into the capability of your MOBO to support an internal drive, either onboard or via a PCIe adapter. The Alesis will work fine with KONTAKT.1 point

Back when we were closer to the DOS era, I used to be able to tell a computer person who had spent time doing phone support because they would say "asterisk period asterisk" rather than "star dot star." You would learn (without being told) on your first day on the phones never to say "star dot star," nor to say "just press any key." You say "press Enter." Things would go more smoothly and calls would be resolved more quickly. Other sample phrase from that time: "backslash, that's the one that leans to the left." Seriously, though, Helos' experience, even in the face of being given instructions, serves to illustrate that a new user (rightly) expects the object itself to give clues as to how to perform important operations on itself. Having to memorize keystrokes just ain't fair play in 2020. The user base has long been requesting that markers of color be represented in the Cakewalk timeline. Observing the design of the Arranger View, it seems obvious that the current product management understands the value of color-coding different sections and events in a project so I'm hoping that we'll see it soon.1 point

This issue should be fixed in the 2020.04 release that was posted earlier today. The issues below were related. Please verify that it is fixed and no longer occurs. Unexpected behavior with Instrument tracks when adding MIDI ports. Adding or removing MIDI devices can cause soft synths to be assigned to incorrect ports.1 point

I jumped on it. Even though I had large amount of Amplitube plugins, Syntronic Deluxe, Miroslav Philharmonik 2. Sampletank 4SE and about 14 items from T-Racks, it's just an insane amount of value. My reasons? Lurssen, Master Match, Mic Room and Stealth Limiter. I have enough of the rest. But Modo Bass is awesome, far more than I expected. In my experience, All IK products have been stable for me, even old Sampletank2 that I also have. I can understand that some don't like the download and generally the upgrade policy. Now I have many redundant licences...1 point

Yep, my brother-in-law had to grown siblings who took their lives 4 years apart - tragic. And sadly, the church often misses the mark - I've worked there for 40+ years and have been burned many times. I've learned that the complexity of the Gospel is it's simplicity - we humans sure can make a mess of things! On topic, unlike the Gospel, the complexity of doing business with IK is it's complexity ? Love you Pete!1 point

Really sorry about your brother. It is hard to believe but also inevitable that an obsession with dogma can overwhelm basic human decency. You deserved better in your hour of need. I hope you found it. I meet a lot of people whose loved ones have died by suicide. It is nearly always appalling for those left behind. Incredibly difficult. I wish you and your family all the best.1 point

That's it - instrument tracks have an audio and a MIDI tab (T in the image below) Here is the CbB help for the Snap to Scale section (N in the image above) http://www.cakewalk.com/Documentation?product=Cakewalk&language=3&help=Inspectors.3.html#1239113 The CbB help pages are not indexed so searches on the old Cakewalk site only show SONAR results. Way back before I recorded on a computer I had a Roland 2480. Loved it. They had effects cards and one of them contained a series of Roland COSM guitar modeling presets and I really really liked them. There's athe TH3 guitar effect amp sim plug-in with Cakewalk which is not bad but does anybody know what happened to the Roland plugs or something that would be similar to them today? WSS1 point
