This is an oft-broached topic, people bemoaning that something doesn't work right after an upgrade or how do I roll back to the previous version, yada yada (before figuring out that it was something else that changed on their system that broke it), so I'll share a tip. Typically when CbB is updated, the major changes only occur in C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\Cakewalk Core (assuming you have installed Cakewalk in the default location, if you have not, adjust accordingly) If you want to upgrade to the latest version of CbB yet also retain the ability to run the previous version, all you need to do is make a copy of Cakewalk Core before you let the upgrade do its thing. If you want to get fancy, you can rename the copied folder to reflect exactly which revision of the program it contains. In this way you could have 2 or 3 revisions of CbB sitting there if you wanted to. To set this up: Right click on C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\Cakewalk Core and select Copy. Right click in the C:\Program Files\Cakewalk folder and select Paste. This will result in there being a new folder with the name "Cakewalk Core - Copy" which you can rename "Cakewalk Core Previous" or whatever. Then let the upgrade run its course. If you want to run the previous version, all you need to do is run the Cakewalk.exe that is inside the "Cakewalk Core Previous" folder, which you can do directly or from a shortcut.2 points

Ummmmm, the Cakewalk Command Center did just that. It had the ability to roll back to any version you wanted. I even did it a few times just to be sure I wasn't 'drunk at the time' something went nutzo.2 points

Hey catchy little number you have hear. The 19 yr old mind was certainly a good story songteller. I was going to point out the compressed on the vocals but you got there first. Dunno if you are up for arrangement ideas, but it might be cool for the first four bars of the intro, just a capella vocals. Then the instrumentation sparse, then the drums as you have them. The vocals are nice and hooky. It has a 60s feel, which, doing the math, makes perfect sense ?2 points

Since this has come up in this forum so many times, and the staff at Cakewalk reads here, I have to think they have a reason for not wanting us to be able to roll back easily. Probably they'd rather have a shot at fixing problems instead of users simply reverting to an older version and never telling Cakewalk about the issues they have. My opinion only.2 points

The best way to see if the watermark is there is to play the file, if you hear it (it's a voice that will be over your track every 5 seconds or so) then it's there. If you play the file and it doesn't have the voice it's clean. Most likely the client loaded your file, saved it (to convert to an MP3 maybe or to trim it or whatever) and didn't realize the free software they were using would add the watermark. From Google search this seems to happen a lot.2 points

Finally!! LOL Yes, the bass player is a former guitar player. That obvious? ? Oh yeah, I know what part you're talking about now. That reminds me, I completely forgot that I went back (in this most recent one you listened to) and added more emphasis to that with an additional drum part that accents that Ba, Ba, Ba, Ba part. Was hoping to get that to poke out a bit more. I'll update the original post with this as the new master.1 point

As Rush put it "Living in the Limelight, the Universal Dream" ! : ) Maybe that's why it sounds so good, ya'll are really relaxed and not trying to prove nothing to nobody. : ) For me I love mixing. I mean I could do this everyday all day long, into the night, never go to bed..... but that ain't real!! I gotta make a living, SO I have to work. : ( I still try to mix, and I ain't half bad. But for me it's so hard to say "Yes, this is finished!" I always am listening, thinking how can I get this part to sound like this, or that. I am always hearing some little thing wrong with it. The bad thing is when I go back and listen to it after some time has past I'm like, what was I hearing? That sounds good. So I listen again and next thing I know, I got it back in the box trying to fix that little something that I am the only one hearing!!! So I haven't been able to find that balance. Or to let it go!! Keep it up though, your doing a great job. Just gotta let that bass guitar stand out some more. : )1 point

I figured it out eventually (and nearly lost my mind in the process). I was snooping around the entire forum for similar problems and came across this http://forum.cakewalk.com/Solved-SONAR-Platinum-will-not-start-m3179162.aspx So I uninstalled ASIO driver and tried installing CbB again. It launched this time (hooray!) I reinstalled the ASIO driver and it failed to launch again. (booo!) I ensured that my midi device and keyboard controller were connected (they weren’t previously), reinstalled ASIO, reinstalled CbB and all is well again. (hooray again!) I find it very strange that you seemingly can’t launch the software without devices connected to the system. Is this a known issue? If it is it needs to go on page 1 of the user guide. Thanks for help and guidance from anyone who bothered to respond. All your efforts are much appreciated. Graham.1 point

I've never seen any software company do that and it's hard to imagine one doing it. You get why: it's the equivalent of saying "we have so little faith in our QA process that we have this handy option for you to get rid of the latest and greatest improved version in case we've fscked it up." Alright Myriad, The first thing I was listening for here was the bass player. I did hear it in this song, but not like I should. The bass is getting buried in the mix. I can hear it in spots, but the bass gets buried a lot. Even in the spot where the bass is the highlight, it's not as up-front as it should be. Can I ask if your a guitar player> ( I am) What a f'n scream man!! At 3:19 that was really good! Lot of feelings there. Mix aside, another great song. Well done, thought out, and executed. I heard this too and it was in each mix. So I assumed it was that digital scratch stuff that is added in for fx. But I could be wrong!! I meant to ask about it. And to further add to my comments to my last post above, The first mix does lack some low end punch. However, it is the most dynamic sounding of the three. IWO, there is less compression and it plays more pleasing (if that description helps at all!! LOL) I am fixing to listen again on my headphones. Myriad, to be totally honest here, if I was your manager or someone in the band with some pull/influence, I'd be telling ya'll to seek some professional mix/mastering services for this. I believe that song is that good. I wanted to send this to you in a PM but you don't have that option available.1 point

Hi Gary, Can I take it that your recording the real instrument? If so, it maybe your Mic, and that said I would use a condenser (or two) as it would have a crisper result than a dynamic. From there I would try two tracks or possibly even three and use the full spectrum for the LRC, applying some delicate EQ to the L&R recording and all but removing the lower range on the center track might be the feel your looking for .. I would suggest that this mix be put on a separate bus so as to fine tune it to where it will sit in the mix, and then to home and out. All that said it's a great song! and if the guys here like it (me also) and your not selling it ... Don't knock yourself out just have fun ? All the best Steve1 point

Update for anyone interested..... As suggested I have submitted the .dmp file to CW support and await their response. In the meantime I have discovered that using the VST3 version of the plugin does not cause the issue, so I at least have a workaround. I'm clueless as to why that might be and have also submitted that info to CW. I thought I read somewhere way back that CW will automatically use the VST3 version of a selected plugin anyway if one is available. Or did I dream that? While I was discovering this, the plugin vendor responded to suggest that maybe the problem is being caused by me using the VST3 version and that I should make sure I'm using VST2. I've now updated them that it appears to be quite the opposite and await their response.1 point

Wellll, see my snarky parenthetical comment about a person's issue usually being something other than an update to Cakewalk itself. I just do not believe that there are enough instances where an update to the CbB software actually hoses someone's DAW system for it to matter. What usually seems to happen, in my observation, is that an upgrade ships, then someone's setup breaks a few days later and the upgrade is only one of the things that has changed by that time, including updates to Windows 10, plug-ins, drivers, etc. I've noticed that the cries for rollbacks seldom happen right after an upgrade ships, which is when you would expect to hear them if they contained code likely to have great negative effect. To be fair, when someone is in ripping your hair out troubleshooting mode, it could come in quite handy to be able to at least eliminate the Cakewalk update as the source of injury. I'm putting this up as an answer to an oft-asked question, and in case savvy users like you and Mark want to archive older builds. I really, really wish there were a Tips 'n' Tricks subforum on here. I know there is a Tutorials forum, but that is for posting links to offsite tutorials. Steve Cook has already posted it more than once, but not with the flashy title as its own topic. This one can be bump't if we get tired of people asking.? As Mark said, it's for peace of mind. Not what I would consider a necessity. I don't actually do it myself. Each build of CbB is thoroughly raked over by a horde of beta testers, and if there were any further nastiness it would be intercepted instantly by people who automatically let BA have its way and would post on the forum. The devs would code up a patch and push it out right away. So for people in the middle of mission-critical projects and whatnot, simply waiting a few days after each version drops is what I would consider sufficient insurance against bugs. Cakewalk: The Vanishing was about the worst bug I've seen make it into the wild in the BandLab era, and it was squashed pretty quickly.1 point

This can be done globally. Under "Controller names", "Standard" in Define instruments and Names, you can customise the list as shown below. It would be nice if this can be done per VST synth, however.1 point

The reason I said what I said was because that is the only answer I could come up with at the time. I had this happen with a plugin and it simply crashed the host it was in. I informed the developer and also posted about it in the forum on another web site of the host. I did everything I could to find the cause. I never did find the cause. However, I stopped using it until I was sure it wouldn't crash the host. A couple months later it was no longer crashing. I don't know if the host developer fixed it or the plugin developer did. I do know that when a plugin crashes a host its a good idea to not use it. That was the real point of the post. Also I answered mainly to let the OP know the post had been noticed. This forum is a place that can do remarkable things but why a plugin crashes is a very hard problem to solve here.1 point

Tom, this is a song to savor. I had to listen a few times just to take everything in. I knew you were quirky, but this takes it to another level. I won't comment on the mix or music because they're a perfect pairing for the message. I agree with the others that it sounds as if the client has used a demo version of an audio conversion program to supply different formats for distribution. I gently suggest that this is an issue of client management. Ask them what formats they require for distribution so that you may deliver them in those final formats. Instruct them not to do any conversion themselves, that you will be happy to supply any further formats if required. This will prevent any future such problems. If this is not practical for whatever reasons, I recommend that you supply your files in FLAC format and that the client use MediaHuman Audio Converter to do their conversions. MediaHuman is 100% freeware and does not impose any watermarking. It is easy to use, available on Windows and Mac OSX and handles conversions to and from all popular formats. https://www.mediahuman.com/audio-converter/ I hope this helps!1 point

And how does that opinion help the OP? Sometimes it is and sometimes it isn't, and sometimes it's a grey area. One thing I suspect, if the OP were to post this screen grab in the plug-in manufacturer's forum, the chorus of "Sektor works just fine in every other DAW" would be deafening.? All we know at this point is that Cakewalk is crashing after paulo unfreezes a Sektor track. What to do? Larry has it right. Contact support, send them the dump file. Maybe there's a configuration or workflow change that can be made in Cakewalk that can prevent this. He should also check with the company who make Sektor to see if anyone else has had similar troubles. The usual troubleshooting questions apply: is this in just one project or any project that uses Sektor, does it happen with a brand new project started in CbB, etc. I have had plug-ins that started working incorrectly after updates to a DAW, and it was determined that the way the plug-in was coded was the problem. The plug-in manufacturer was unresponsive (Sonivox, notorious for this sort of thing). But it worked fine before my DAW made the change, so whose "problem" was it really when my DAW company were the ones who broke the functionality for me and the other users of the VSTi? Next rev of the DAW, they made some changes to other stuff and it mysteriously started working again, so it was all good in the end. No matter what the sins of the plug-in, the host may either trap errors gracefully or fall flat on its face. A correctly-coded plug-in may also expose flaws in a host by making calls to functions that most other plug-ins don't. For these reasons, it's not really helpful to blow it off with "it's probably the plug-in's fault" and leave it at that. Having said that, it's also kind of silly to title the thread "everywhere" a crash when all it is is one plug-in. I mean, come on, it's frustrating, but how about something more descriptive?1 point

The source audio watermark thing linked earlier is an invisible watermark. It adds "noise" to a sound file that doesn't cripple the file but gives you the ability to trace where it came from. It's a different kind of watermarking (which is why it needs a tool to find it).1 point

I've listened to this 4 times, and I still can hardly believe that you're singing this. Only because your voice can be so different from song to song. This is a cool song with an even cooler beat. The mix if very good, and it sounds warm and inviting, thus, drawing the listener into the song. You're one of the best!1 point

I was going to respond to this thread earlier, but then it sort of exploded. Some of these comments are already mentioned, but worth repeating. First and foremost, if music it is something you enjoy, then do it for that reason. Doing it for any other reason is something to reconsider. Vocally, in addition to advice above, know your range and limitations, and leverage those. A chromatic tuner is an awesome tool to practice with and will help you with determining your comfortable range as well - the reason I say this is that while singing to a piano note is great, you also need to know where you are. Practicing duration for notes will yield a lot of insight into what is most comfortable for both range and duration of passages (esp. for your own lyrics). Once you know your normal range and capabilities, you can choose songs in a proper tuning for your voice. One big reason 432 tuning is used is to remove stress from the vocalist... there are many options for this. The focus here is to leverage the true range of your voice, not to "force" it to where it doesn't want to go. With asthma, takes lanes and comping can be your friend. If running out of air, rather than strain yourself, leverage this tool. Do passages multiple times individually if necessary, but over time you may find you can do more and more in one pass. Practicing is like exercise, so simple things like "karaoke" where you sing to a recorded track (in your range), then mix the commercial track down (or even mute it) will yield a lot of insight. Again, these are tools to know yourself, adapt, and improve. In-ear-monitor (or headphones)... people sound differently (higher) when recorded than they do to themselves because the bones between the vocal chords and the ears actually dampen higher frequencies. Listening to the mic in real-time allows you to hear and adjust your singing dynamically. Once you get used to this, you will condition yourself to sing the way it gets heard (by the mic and your audience). As was mentioned previously in this thread, a lot of this comes from singing technique and learning yourself. If you have never seen the movie "The King's Speech," it is worth watching... but will leave this with a simple scene from it:1 point

Gromit is hereby advised to stay off the lsd. Great mix. My toes were tapping, man that drummer is great. It's all well performed, and shout out to the vocal mixing, they blend very well.
