Well talk about off-topic!! Coffee house, here we come... Actually I was first published in 1966, so yeah, I've been at this awhile . IIRC the first Guitar Player column was in 1975. And I've been writing about Sonar/CbB for almost two decades - time flies when you're having fun. One of the great things about writing articles on CbB is the program is so deep I never run out of topics. After all, in almost 20 years, I still haven't written about the Matter Transmuter plug-in. Noel's probably upset that I haven't covered the Dynamite Blurch Injector either...I'll get to both of them one of these days.3 points

I think Paulo was joking. But just to clarify... no, this is not my book. If/when I release something new, you'll definitely hear about it. I'd strongly favor a separate Q&A subforum, but only if users were to exercise some self-discipline when using it. We all know that ain't gonna happen.2 points

I’ve had similar issues with BandLab Assist either not updating or not displaying anything other than a vertical white screen. Re-downloading from the web site seemed to fix it. I’m very grateful for BandLab for keeping Cakewalk alive and bringing us the forums (look great by the way!), but unfortunately Bandlab Assist is very poorly designed compared to the old Cakewalk Command Center. I hope they migrate that over soon. ?1 point

The Sonitus plug ins are not the prettiest looking things to stare at but if I were to die tomorrow and was given a chance to take one plug in suite (Not talking waves bundles) I would have to take the Sonitus plug ins. I've learned to carve out frequency's and do things with those plug ins that I haven't been able to do with others. They do remind me of a vintage guitar.1 point

I know I am old and stupid, but it seems unnecessarily difficult to find cakewalk and especially the forums on bandlab. If you type bandlab.com in your browser address bar you get to a page https://www.bandlab.com/feed where you can log on to your bandlab account, but I do not see any link from that page to anything having to do with cakewalk. If it is there, it is remarkably easy to miss. If you use the search box on that page you do not get anything that will link you to cakewalk as a product, much less the forum. If you click the Explore Bandlab button you get a page https://www.bandlab.com/explore/home that has a tiny list at the bottom which includes a download apps hyperlink, but the list of apps does not include cakewalk. If you type cakewalk.com you get a page with two learn more buttons both of which take you to a page https://www.bandlab.com/products/cakewalk that provides a description of cakewalk and a download link. It also includes a list of hyperlinks at the very bottom under the heading community, but there is no link to the forums there or anywhere else that I can find on that page. While anyone who has been regularly following these forums will no doubt have learned how to get to the new forum, it does not seem that it will be obvious to any new user. It is certainly not obvious except to the cognoscenti that you should be looking for a cakewalk forum under "discuss." It would seem to be a no-brainer to put PROMINENT links between cakewalk and bandlab web pages so that people who get to the one can easily find the other. originally posted on http://forum.cakewalk.com/SONAR1 point

I use East West Spaces, along with some other in-house stuff, like the built-in reverbs on my various synths, and Breverb. I use Spaces to tie it all tohether. If you catch EW on one of their 50% sales, it's a steal. It has a great rep, I've never heard anything negative about it.1 point

I think it is redundant at best and confusing at least as the majority of "general" discussions begin with a question and most "questions" result in a discussion. Clearly not so clear.1 point

I don't see why there should be an issue with Sonar users asking questions here, and people certainly shouldn't feel they should have to hide the fact their using Sonar - far from it - there may be issues that are specific to a particular Sonar version that users here could offer help or workarounds for. Now it may be that an issue is down to a Sonar bug that has been fixed in CbB, and that an upgrade is recommended. At this point, I guess it's up to the user in question whether to upgrade or not, but at least they're given the relevant information and the choice to do so. As for the OP's original issue... have you tried deleting AUD.INI? I've had similar crashes when AUD.INI got corrupted.1 point

I, too, like the idea of these forums staying distinct. The only issue is that said distinction is difficult to define exactly, which will lead to people (probably me) posting in the wrong forum (which would also happen even if the distinction was perfect and obvious). Forum moderators can ride herd on that sort of thing by moving posts to the correct forum, of course. Still, as I said, I like the idea and think it should be tried for a while. The two can always be merged later (which would be a lot easier to do than going in the other direction once there are many posts).1 point

PerfectSpace still worked fine last time I checked. IIRC, it was Aleksey Vaneev who wrote it originally and licensed it to Cakewalk. He still has his more full-featured version of it, Pristine Space, available for sale. Unfortunately it was never ported to 64 bits. There are also a bunch of free IRs available from Voxengo. If you have a strong aversion to 32-bit plugins, there's Reverberate 2 from LiquidSonics. It's got every bell 'n whistle you could ever want in a convolution reverb, but it'll set you back about $125 or so. And if you've got some serious coin rattling around your piggy bank, there's Altiverb. It's the choice of many folks who do post production, but rather pricey at over 500 bucks.1 point

The grocery store where I get my fresh fruit and vegetables has rolls of green plastic bags for organic produce (which are a bit more expensive), and transparent plastic bags for conventionally grown produce. Customers ignore the color-coding, and the checkers have to look inside the bags to figure out what you're buying. I vote for one kind of bag at the supermarket, and one CbB forum for questions, answers and discussions. Same principle: No one will pay attention to this arbitrary "rule," so why complicate things if it won't make life better? How about dumping the Q&A board and adding one for hardware and third party software?1 point

There were two Sonar Tips books, "The Big Book of SONAR Tips" and "The Second Big Book of SONAR Tips." These were combined to make "The Huge Book of Cakewalk by BandLab Tips," and edited to include only what was in CbB (for example, there aren't any tips about Rapture Session, because it's not in CbB). There were also a few added tips, but if you have the first two books, you don't really need the CbB one. If you have only the first or second one, then I do think you'd want the extra material.1 point
-
Agreed.Plus I do believe we will have an influx of new forum members that got CbB after the cakewalk forum was closed to new members and the separation might be good to have.1 point

I quite like the distinction. One is for no nonsense straightforward answers if you actually know the answer No discussion required. You either know the answer or you don't. I think of it as the scook section. Saves wading through pages of conjecture when all you want is a simple answer. The other is more of a discussion/suggestion/opinion place for those who choose to participate in that.1 point

The functionality of Take Lanes is very similar to Layers, but how you get to that functionality differs. Because of this, people tried to use Take Lanes the way they used Layers, and when that didn't work, they assumed Take Lanes were buggy. This isn't to say there couldn't be bugs, but a lot of those were due to unfamiliarity with a different workflow. For example, if you do manual editing with the Edit tool instead of using the comping-specific tools, Take Lanes work a lot more like Layers. I put a lot of effort into sorting this all out, and wrote up the results for my Sound on Sound magazine column. Although it's about X3, the information still applies to CbB. I think you'll find the column very useful in making Take Lanes act like Layers (especially the section on editing), as well as understand some of the benefits of Take Lanes.1 point

I am a Sonar user and though its name has changed to Cakewalk it is my "fall back will do it there if I am serious" DAW. Yet I too looked around I went with Cubase 9.5 Pro. I have Mixbus, Samplitude and Studio One 4. I have been keeping up with it . For me I am most interested with MIDI and only Cakewalk and Cubase have the MIDI chops. Though Studio One is coming on strong. I did upgrade to Cubase 10 Pro. I like it but in many ways Cakewalk is better for so many things. Cubase has a lot of power but it also has bugs. Too many that are show stoppers. I must say I enjoyed reading this thread because I learned a lot. So many of you were candid and offer good reviews. Thank you for this thread and the quality of the posts.1 point

And regarding CbB, what new users probably have no idea about (and they are in for a joyful surprise) is how many Cakewalk Sonar veterans there are who are absolutely the best guys you might ever come across who will help you and support you in whatever problem you have with the CbB DAW, Plugins, VST pathway issues, Fx, you name it. They don't belittle you for your ignorance and having to ask the question several times when you don't understand, and they go outside the normal scope of the issue and don't have a problem helping you with related things (what type of Computer should I try to get?). And these guys have been around a LONG time. They know things that stymie many of us. Great, great resource of guys come along with CbB.1 point

@Starise I certainly agree on owning and using multiple DAWs and NLEs for video editing, emphasis on digging in deep, learning and "USING" them. I'm pretty sure Cakewalk was always by far the most common DAW used for Windows computers. I myself became aware of it because it came bundled with a new Windows 95 computer I bought back in the day, and I immediately started using it to edit MIDI sequences I had previously made on my Roland MC 500 hardware sequencer that required floppy discs for storage that could only hold 1.5 mb of MIDI files. My Win 95 computer had a mind blowing 1 GB hard drive. Couldn't do MIDI with Pro Tools in 95 which only ran on a Mac and so I fell in love Cakewalk. But unfortunately Cakewalk couldn't do audio so Pro Tools had to stay, and the Mac and the Win 95 where joined at the hips with a MIDI sync MTC. But by the time SONAR 4 Producer hit the shelves Cakewalk became #1, not just in my studio, it was the #1 most award winning DAW in the WORLD! It was so stable and feature rich it was awarded the MIPA Awards.. In other words, it was regarded as so stable and feature rich as the only DAW you will ever need, and at a ridiculously low affordable price.. And so before anyone gets all angry at the fact Gibson charged them $500 for SONAR Platinum I'd like to point out the fact that you couldn't buy all the included 3rd party FULLY LICENSED plugins that came bundled for free with SPLAT for $500. Truth be told, I wasn't happy in the least with Gibson's $150 per year subscription plan model and decided to drop it. But then, right before I decided to stop renewing, Addictive Drums and a choice of 3 MIDI packs was added and that was a better deal then I could get from XLN Audio themselves, and then there was Rapture Session, Cakewalk's new and improved LP EQ and LP MB, and my #1 buss go to piece Cakewalk Adaptive Limiter.. What am I stupid not to get Addictive Drums at such a discounted price? And that tradition of updating Cakewalk still stands today thanks to Meng and all the folks at Bandlab, and it's free, and that means we have $150 extra per year to add any plugins and instruments of our choosing. You might still keep up, but you have to look for your own discounted price deals. @backwoods You only get to keep the latest paid for version Pro Tools for Avid subscription plan, not all those killer FX plugins.1 point

Hi guys, I hope all of you have had an incredible 2018 and are looking forward to winding down (if you haven't already) for the Christmas period. For everyone around the world on the BandLab Technologies, BandLab (and CbB) team, it's been a mad 12 months with a tremendous amount of milestones reached, but one of the crowning highlights was of course getting the opportunity to get to know this particularly community better and to bring Cakewalk into being part of our group journey. It feels like only yesterday we were releasing the news, and I hope you guys haven't felt that we have let you down in the months since. We have seen an amazing take-up of Cakewalk since we relaunched the product as Cakewalk by BandLab - far beyond even our own expectations. As I mentioned in a blog post yesterday about reaching 5 million users earlier this month on BandLab - we are humbled by the support, feedback and passion with which you, the community, engage with us, the product and each other. There are too many names to thank, but none of what we have today with Cakewalk would have been possible without Noel, Ben and their desire and vision to be part of the opportunity forward with us here at BandLab. So with that, an early Christmas present we have for all of you is the launch of the new forum! As promised, we wanted to make sure the old format lived on - topics, threads and an incredible resource for anyone getting to know the product. It's not been ideal that we had to turn off new sign ups to forum.cakewalk.com, especially for the massive community of new users who have flooded in around the world to start using Cakewalk - but we hope it was worth the wait. It's a little empty at the moment and is really a clean slate, so please make yourselves feel at home. Forums only exist to serve the community that lives within them so instead of seeding content we thought it would be best to leave it fresh for you to jump in and get comfortable. Instead of the previous situation where nothing can be hosted on the site - we've also decided to launch with everyone having 50MB of usable space per user and there's also a snazzy new BandLab integration (written by Jesse) that allows you to leverage our embeddable players to share your music with other members of the community. Notifications and emails are also all working, though you may experience a couple of emails going to spam, especially if you use Gmail, so make sure you check in that folder if you can't find any notifications from the forum. Jumping in is easy, just like this forum was accessed via a single sign-on Cakewalk account - this is now the case with your BandLab account and you can connect straight through and set up your profile. I hope you guys will like the new home and we look forward to sharing more about the things we've got in the roadmap for the year ahead. If any of you are planning to be at NAMM in Anaheim for the January show, please also don't hesitate to reach out and stop by to say hello! Much love, Meng & all on the BandLab Team p.s please also send your appreciation to @Jesse Jost and @laurent for their hard work in getting this place up and running amongst all the other things they are working on! ------ Why did we create this new site for the forum instead of continuing to use the old one? As I'm sure you'll notice, the new site allows us to develop on a much stronger infrastructure and architecture for the go forward - providing our users the opportunity to create new accounts (sorry!) but also to introduce more forum tools, user storage, Q&A discussions for better technical engagement, community voting and more. The new site also helps to provide a fresh start for the go-forward whilst not destroying the structure of the old site and potentially affecting the value of it as a resource to the community. Will the old forum go away? In a couple of weeks' time, the old forum will become read-only, at which point you will no longer be able to post. However, we feel (and have taken your recommendations) that it remains a vital resource for the long term and we intend to keep it hosted and to remain in its current place at https://forum.cakewalk.com.1 point
