File attachment size shrinking drastically?

We used to be able to attach a few megabyte of files, maybe something like four? (was at least 2.5megabyte back in 2024; my attachments list shows a couple of that size back then (dmp files to help Varorium fix something).

A little while back (months? weeks? it shrank to around a meg and a half.

Now it's down to less than 30 kilobyte....

Drag files here to attach, or choose files...

Max total size: 29.5 kB

In replying on my cell the bottom of this box says 4.88MB max (total and file). Do you have other attachments taking up the missing space?

(Reports of shrinking appendages are going to scare off forum members (for fear of their members)!)

I looked at the My Attachments page in my profile and saw this "You have used 9.86 MB of your 48.83 MB attachment limit" so maybe your problem is related to being close to, or exceeding your maximum limit for attachments.

Hmm.....lemme see....I completely missed that big gigantic orange bar at the top of that page, which clearly shows that I've used up all the space.  :(

Guess I'll go delete some older stuff.

Thanks. :sheepish grin:

I just checked my attachments and it includes PMs... I deleted 3 attachments that were in PMs so that space was recovered (same thread), but then went into the thread and they are still there.

It would be nice if the powers that be could ease up on this restriction, I suspect that the cost of resources for the back end has dropped.

The issue I run into is that as the forum goes on, I have screen shots and so forth in posts where I presented a solution for someone, and it seems like a shame to have to delete illustrations rather than keep them useful for the many people who hit Google looking for solutions to their Cakewalk issues. The forum has been around for half a dozen years now.

Chose your format wisely. Sometimes GIF saved for web dithered works very well but medium or high JPG may be best for all around quality and size.  PNG can be smaller or almost 3x the size of a JPG depending on settings.  Photo editing software can affect file size differently.

Same image:
TIF = 1,188 KB (best quality)
BMP = 1,164 KB (close to best)
PNG = 224 KB (good)
WEBP = 136 KB (good)
JPG  = 80 KB (high/optimized) (good)
GIF = 76 KB (standard) (slightly better than worst)
GIF = 46 KB (save for web 32bit no dither) (worst)

When converting my uploaded PNGs to GIFs, some images went from 128 KB to 9 KB without major quality loss at 1080p.  Higher resolution screens may see a bigger difference.  I also found some images grossly misrepresented on the forum site - like a 46 KB file reported as157 KB which would contribute to loss of storage space needlessly. O.o

After conversion my used space went from 75% to 46%.

What I often do is screen grab using Windows' own Win+Shift+S utility then paste directly into a post in order to save time and eliminate needing to open a raster editor, saving an image, then uploading it.

I think the forum converts such images to .PNG's for storage, so it could be that my practice of doing that is using up my quota sooner than if I went with .JPG's.

So when the time comes that I just don't have enough room to post images of attach minidumps or whatever, I'll ask the powers that be to increase my allotment. If they won't, we start saying goodbye to illustrations that went with my topics and replies over the years.
