And not all USB3 ports are compliant with USB3 power standards, either (just as USB and USB2 ports may not be). So...sometimes you have to use a separate power source regardless of the port something is connected to. Similarly, the power from such a port isn't always as clean as the adapter that came with a device (though often enough the converse is true).
sjoens Posted 14 hours ago Author Posted 14 hours ago DC power is a given for me and I never rely on USB power if there's an option. (The MOTU MIDI micro lite is USB only) Sorry I always forget the obvious required info - It's the hybrid which has firewire and installs the firewire driver (as noted), but my system has no firewire so never thought it would be an issue as disconnection should relate to USB. It'll take a few days to confirm tho. I originally installed the latest hybrid drivers as they are the only ones updated now. When the issue began, I tried going back to older drivers to verify or eliminate the driver. Since then I've reinstalled the newest ones but the issue remains, so I'm still leaning toward it being a Windows update. 18 hours ago, mettelus said: have you checked system files on that machine? SFC and DISM are two things to check when a system gets flaky. Doing that now. 9 hours ago, Amberwolf said: Iv'e used Sanitycheck, Whocrashed, and Whysoslow from resplendence to track down issues before. Thanks, will be checking those out too.
sjoens Posted 12 hours ago Author Posted 12 hours ago SFC found an repaired several files. DISM only says it completed successfully. During the wait I remembered we've had a couple of power outs/spikes that may have contributed some issues.

Are there two versions of that interface? When I was looking for specs I was only getting returns on the "hybrid" model, so I assumed there is only one. I guess another easy check is to look at the device and see if it has a FireWire A port on it (one end is squared off and the other end has beveled corners). Comments about drivers above are definitely worth noting (i.e., an older version may be better if you have them or can still download them). The very last Saffire driver for my Focusrite was just a "Mac-compliant update" but broke the Windows drivers, so I downloaded extra copies of the earlier version just so I have them when the driver page disappears. Also, have you reached out to MOTU directly? If it is truly a driver issue, they would be the best resource since they should already know issues and workarounds for their hardware.
sjoens Posted 2 hours ago Author Posted 2 hours ago In MOTU world "hybrid" means USB. The original mk3 was firewire only and is discontinued including driver downloads as the hybrid drivers work on it too. I bought this unit used and reached out to see if I can get it re-registered in my name but no answer yet. Other forms of comm are currently unavailable. I posted on MOTUNation but the few responders weren't that helpful. The issue is probably unique to me only. I'm giving the last round of troubleshooting 2 or 3 days before I say more.
