Another  update

I've put together another mix that address the feedback, and I've also re-recorded a several parts that annoyed me. Thanks for the critiques!

Update

Life has thrown curveball after curveball at my family this last year, and my ability to spend time playing and writing has been pretty limited. I wanted to put this one to bed as is but the first mix isn't the original version.   This mix adds back some lyrics and parts that I had chopped out of the first mix in an attempt to keep it short and sweet.  I've also updated the lyrics below.  I'm not sure it's a better version, but it's a different one, and more to the point, it's closer to the original one.

Love to hear your crits, nits and gripes with this, thanks!

Here's a new song I've finally gotten close to wrapping up. We've all had songs that just fall together in a just a few days from conception to finish. Well, this ain't one of those. I know there are a few rough edges in there but this song kind of lends itself to having a few.  Let me know what you think.

Lyrics:

stressful situation
kwalsh - 4/25/2025

verse 1

you hear the echo
of an empty room

you feel the car
as it bounces
over your tomb

gonna party like
i'll never grow old

spend the night
in jail
you never know

I wanna be like
those guys on tv
dark holes where
my crying eyes should be

shut my eyes to
the pain and the fear
enamel skin and an
ironclad belief

chorus

i guess im in a
stressful situation
i guess ill find out
what im made of
whats inside of me

circumstances
ran me down today
gotta get my ***** away

oh yeah

its too much this
stressful situation
its all ive ever known

verse 2

you think its okay
but you know its a crutch
you find the static of the world
is just too much

like a wire sparkin
over your skin
you think its stopped
but it starts all over again

the band is playing
its favorite tune
god knows  you did
everything you could to

I wanna be like
those guys on tv
dark holes where
my crying eyes should be

chorus

i guess im in a
stressful situation
i guess ill find out
what im made of
whats inside of me

circumstances
ran me down today
gotta get my ***** away

oh yeah

its too much this
stressful situation
its all ive ever known

Awe ...  bad cut off

But boy oh boy did I hear something of the Beatles in this ? Well produced and as said your stuff should be mainstream.

Just a thing ... Given you do the songwriting  ... do you do all your own recording? engineering ? ... Mastering, cause I've only listened to a few here who can do this pro stuff on their own .. anyway ...gr8 stuff!!

Thanks for listening Steve, Beatles? Gosh, I love hearing your feedback. 😀

It's nice to hear your comments on the quality of my recordings, I consider myself a rank amateur compared to you and many others on this forum, notably Bats Brew, Devine, Baselines and Mark Skinner, so thank you for that.

Yes, I do all of my own recording and mastering. My setup is prelatively simple,  all in the box with no external hardware other than the interface.

I have a few nice guitars, a Strat, an Eastman semihollow body and a good old p-bass. I use an an Audient ID22 interface and an SM57 mic and a Microphone Parts T12 mic I built from a  kit .

I use Tonex for all guitars and bass, mostly using Amalgam Audio profiles of Marshall, Vox, GK and Supro amps. I sometimes use a Waves maxxbass plug, and most always use  izotope nectar for vocals, Valhalla supermassive for some reverbs and Izotope ozone for mastering.

Addictive Drums and EZ Drummer for drums.  For this song I used both, panned hard left and right playing. Any keys or synths use Dimension or Z3TA and since I don't play keys, I use PRV to create key and synth parts.

I use Slate's VSX headphones for all mixing and mastering.

I credit any goodness in my recordings to  the Audient preamps for their warm, clean sound. It's hard to record something that sounds bad, even with my rudimentary guitar skills.

Finally, I use the awesome Sonar for its ability to let me do take after take after take after take...

Thanks for that and very interesting to a nerd like myself.

Your stuff is far from simple when it comes to price and all top notch when comes to quality. I have a few and various H Phones and the Slate's were on my shopping list once, but I went for the DT770s .. bad choice 'cause my ears get really hot when working on a large project, I use  Sennheiser in ear, but I love my dt250s and use them for all but mastering, I love the kit T12 and you may have convinced me to invest ... I worried about it being a kit For around £400 ..

Personally and for the most part I only use Sonar Platinum and CB 14 so I agree with you Sonar is still awsum!

Thanks again for sharing ... stay well and keep them comingB|

Steve, I really like the T12, and it was pretty easy to build. The instructions are great and easy to follow. It has a very lovely warm sound to my ears, and it's the only really decent mic I own other than 57s and 58s. I use it for acoustic guitar and vocals, and yes, for a kit is a bit expensive but I think it punches pretty far above its weight class. Lately I have been reverting to using an old SM57 for vocals because as I get older my voice has been getting fuzzier and harder to set into the mix. The 57 helps a lot there.

The plugins I use were all bought during sales during which I was able to pick up individual packages  at steeply discounted prices. Keep your eyes open for sales, that's the only same way to buy software as far as I'm concerned.

CLASSIC!!!

I love this song, really good.

You caught me in the middle of having a few, so now I will be adding a few more!

Steve

Thanks, Steve, I appreciate you listening. I very nearly cut that line out, glad I didn't. 😬

 Have one on me!

This is outstanding. The vibrato distorted guitar really hits the 'stress' button hard right out the gate. Rocks hard, but not too hard.

Great lyrics, flawless singing and playing. Everything sounds well balanced, pro level to my ears.

I also reacted to this line, very clever! Sounds quite pro to me. The tremolo guitar is well found. Nice to hear blue notes again, seems like they are redlisted today. Well done!

Thank you for listening, glad you enjoyed it. It seems like blue notes are all I have, relisted or not! 😀

  • Kevin Walsh changed the title to Stressful Situation - Mix 2

Kevin , I thought this was Fantastic ! I missed the first mix and kind of glad I did. I think you Nailed this one. The vocals were excellant .  I Really wish I had your range , seems I'm quickly losing the high's in my old age.

I for sure got an "old school" psychedelic vibe in this one.   Loved it ..

I hope things calm down a little for you pretty soon . Although ..     you sure know how to take advantage of a stressfull situation.            Cheers ..   mark
