How Much Time Till Cakewalk for Bandlab is Permanently Deactivated?

We do plan on improving user customization for colors in the future. It wont be the same as what theme editor does since that was bitmap based. Its not as simple as you think - the entire UI backend has been replaced in Sonar.

Noel,  respectfully, I never said or implied I thought it was simple.  All I stated was my real issue.  I'm literally poking around in studio one right now and have been able to change track colors, contrast even key bindings to cakewalks within minutes, and I didn't have to bother anyone or ask to do it.  Personally, I don't want to leave,  but if you want people to support the product, listening to them on things like workflow and preferences shouldn't be a point of friction.

I downloaded Sonar evaluation copy and see that many of the features I use are still there, except for the color options being quite limited.  Changing the color of events in the Event List has always been very useful, now it's gone.  I thought Sonar was going to add new features, not take away old ones!

I also discovered that the bug that has been present in the Notation Editor, which is the inability to display dotted & tied triplets correctly has not be repaired.

Finally, if I use Sonar Free for a while before subscribing, does this mean I have to see the membership information and evaluation countdown every time I load the app?

I want to support Sonar by subscribing but so far it's a bit disappointing to see long-standing notation errors still unaddressed and fewer color options...

I have a minor niggle here!

In CbB, I could settle my cursor over the Performance Meters and a small window would pop up, showing the realtime measurements of threads, ram and disc!!

This feature is not in Sonar Free it seems! I set my cursor over it now and nothing happens!!!

Is there a setting I forgot about or is that feature gone?

Not a deal breaker, but I relied on this to monitor how close I was to crapping out the CPU.

It will be sorely missed.

They appear on my system using the free tier Sonar.

Post August Cbb will cease to activate which means you will no longer be able to save projects from there which is the normal behavior when the app is not activated. It will probably continue to load projects and playback.

And that is exactly the stab in the back I was hoping to avoid. All that foggy "discussions" on longevity of Cakewalk by Bandlab , lead to this ^....     I have no desire (personal ethical reasons) to use new free Sonar or subscription. Will I still be able to activate pre Band lab version?

I certainly wouldn't argue with anyone over their decisions or preferences. However, I find that Sonar Free does everything I've been using in CbB, better optimised and fully supported. With no subscription.

Personally, I like the UI too!

I think Bandlab have been extraordinarily generous over the years and as a free option this is a seriously good DAW.  Seems hash to criticise them for ending support for CbB when there's a great replacement with - as far as I can see - no snags. Or is there something I'm missing?

I don't care about "support", but deactivating existing setup is heartless at best.  I've asked the question on longevity many times. Leaving 2 months  before killing Cakewalk is just unprofessional.  I am certain some people need a lot more time to finish existing projects before committing to new latest and greatest or moving on.  I hoped that they would  announce / give it at least a year before doing what they about to do.  I am speechless.

Question still remains for Noel:

Will I still be able to activate pre Band lab version?  Will I still be able to activate it in 2-3 years?

You have had plenty of time and plenty of warning my friend. Get over it.
Objecting to changing to the new Free version of the same Daw which is now supported will get zero sympathy from the community.
Even Im happy with this news. Of course I’d be happier if it was also a purchase option but I’ve moved on and there’s plenty of competition in Daw land.

Im not sure what you mean by pre bandlab version. If you mean the Gibson Sonar - that is a complete different product that Bandlab has graciously continued to leave intact. As long as the back end exists and isnt made obsolete by some toolset changes it will continue to work but its not our responsibility to guarantee anything beyond that. RE EOL of CbB, it was announced more than a year ago that it would transition to Sonar ultimately!

Why anyone wouldn't use the freemium tier instead of CbB beats me. You are getting a major improved product to use for free.

OK, so when we install the new software, will it find all our projects, plugins and all that we were using from the CBB version, or will we need to point it to all of them? Also, do I need to uninstall the old one, or do anything to prevent conflicts?

No, the transition is completely seamless if you choose to migrate settings.

Cheers Anthony, I'm pretty much a computer idot and I had no trouble installing the new free Sonar. CbB dont even seem to notice it's there.

And to my memory, when I first opened Sonar, I just clicked "Open" in the upper left corner and my projects from CbB were there. If I can do it, a monkey can do it.

Btw, in case u missed it, this is John's video on how to install free Sonar...

If you mean the Gibson Sonar

Yes, Gibson Sonar. If I remember correctly, Noel you've mentioned back then, when Gibson went belly up, that if there will be issues with activations,  it will be permanently unlocked.  This is not the case any longer?

It was, but then people panicked and shortly specific wording was deleted from the FAQ.

Trust issues. In my 30+ years of using computer I had only 2 instances where software companies pulled a rug under me.  One software title relied 100% on online back end, so that is in a way understandable. With Cakewalk, it's only the activation.

I have no desire to use new Sonar until / if normal licenses are introduced.  After August, I plan on using the last Gibson version.

John, I am.

Just want to make sure that I will be able to activate my old (Gibson) Cakewalk within next few years.

No that was said before BandLab acquired Cakewalk. It was only said that if there was no choice available to users that was a potential option. It hasn't been needed since 2018.

I cant solve your trust issues. If 7 years of using the product with zero payment and now a free tier isn't enough, there isn't anything me or anyone can do.

Removing specific "discontinuation of cakewalk" wording from FAQ last year and only learning only today that only 2 months left for Cakewalk to work.... That what broke my trust completely.

An advanced noticed should have been given.  And obviously normal licenses, as 95% of other DAWs offer.

My assumption is, once Gibson version is activated on particular computer, you will not deactivate it on that machine as you will do in 2 months with Cakewalk by bandlab?

For you not - I have a different opinion.
